This would be cool and would have made me upgrade. One of my fav features in the days of blackberry.
Mine to , maybe if we are lucky a dev could figure out how to implement this some how .I would rather that than always on display

It’s what sold me. I was going into this thinking yeah I don’t want a phone with a punch hole camera. This has taught me a lesson not to just go by the rumors although I should’ve already known this

Is there a pic with a good comparison?
Here you go…

It’s hard to tell by that pic but it looks like the dynamic island cutout is lower on the screen that the notch. I hope it doesn’t cut into normal video watching on YouTube 😢

Edit: Now that I look at it a little closely I don’t think it will because there’s quite a bit of space. Here’s a screenshot just for some perspective.

How does a picture of a watch help show how low the dynamic island sits…?

My screen shot shows that it is very clearly lower than the notch.

It looks interesting but widescreen videos will look worse as the pill will cut into content.
For example, all MKBHD videos on YouTube are widescreen and are perfectly aligned before the notch.
The Pill cutout sits lower so it will be visible...

I don't think it will. The Phone and Screen got a little bit "longer" and the Pill seems to perfectly align with the notch, which can't be a coincidence.

As Nozuka said, the screen is slightly larger, the pill ends at the same point the notch did.

And to be fair, it looks like the pictures dustin provided is a iphone 13 pro vs a 14 pro max

I really love the island, but I thought ALL notifications/alerts/whatever are now dynamic island notifications. I saw someone playing around with the iphone 14 pro xcode simulator and all notifications look the same as always and are displayed under the island.

While I do agree their marketing seems pretty creative and clever on paper or in the keynote...

I am wondering how the variable-size "cutout" is going to look with glass screen protectors. Or any type of screen protectors, really. Most glass screen protectors used to have cutouts for the notch and sensors - I am not aware of any that covered camera lenses, and the speaker is obviously coverable.

As someone using a glass screen protector on an iPhone with a notch, I can't imagine the black "island" expanding beyond the edges of a screen protector to look anything but awkward.
All my screen protectors are full screen, no cutouts. I also have the torras 14 pro screen protectors right next to me and they have no cutout for the island. It's just a fullscreen glass with a super little cutout where the speaker is.

Totally groundbreaking innovation. Very impressed. As someone said elsewhere it makes pretty much all other iPhones look obsolete. This announcement today is surely up there with the original, the 4 and the X. Will 100% be upgrading to the 14 Pro, as if they kept the price the same too

Obsolete? Okay. Tbf, I'm not sure if you're being /s.

I wonder if there a way to maximise lit pixels whilst watching full screen video or gaming? I'd rather have two smaller holes in those two use cases whilst holding the phone horizontally. In all other scenarios I like the floating blob solution.

As someone who has been using IOS 16 on their phone for awhile, this all makes a lot more sense. They implemented these black notifications at the top that don't look quite right with a notch phone.

My issue is that it’s further down the screen, blocking an area that was previously not blocked. Which means it sticks out more instead of being tucked as far away as possible. Currently, the bottom of the notch perfectly aligns with the bottom of the time and icons. The bottom of Dynamic Island extends below that line by about half at least.
dont worry about it...they align the icons as before, see post by Nozuka

The issue i wonder is how the dynamic island works when you use one handed functionality, when you drag the screen down
The dynamic island remain on top? or it gets down with the display and we will have the middle just a blank gargabe UI ?!

yes, i dont know it was intended since the release the iphone 13 or not...but the first notch it was indeed slimmer and wider...
But the comparison you did is with the taller notch from the 13 line up. So it is right on point and no difference in height at all...all the iphone 13 users will get more pixels back

but again people saw somewhere how the dynamic island works when you drag the display down for upper portion accessibility ?!
Apple did named it "Reachability"

Hope is not a mess and hope the dynamic island remain always on top no matter if you use Reachability or not

The Island made me dizzy just looking at all that resizing and animations. Yet another distraction. A gimmick, like many new recent features:
- App Library (Android has it in a simpler and more straightforward way)
- Sidecar (third-party solutions do exist and are more reliable and universal, not limited to Apple hardware)
- Universal Control (how would it even be useful in real world?)
- Stage Manager (just implement a proper multitasking)
etc.

None of those features should have ever passed the testing and be shipped. But in this case, Apple wouldn't have anything to show in their keynotes.

I stand by my point:
