I was impressed by it, but let's see how many third parties use it. I'm guessing a lot will.

I do think the dynamic island is a very clever and thoughtful way to turn a weakness-the notch-into a strength or something useful. I do admire the thinking behind it from a design solution. But in terms of a feature, it’s just another way to display notifications. I don’t find that to be so groundbreaking. Or am I missing something.

I couldn't agree more. And especially if the "island" is positioned lower than then notch, I can see how it could be more obtrusive than the notch, particularly when watching media.

I LOLed for real on that one.

Apple: We put in a notch for Face ID

Public: We hate it, get rid of it

Apple: We put it on the macs too

Public: .....get rid of it, at least make it smaller

Apple: We made it functional instead

Public: .....god damn it.....

The "public" being a vocal minority on MR 😅

Notch is an eye sore. "Island" is a useless distraction.

Apple's presentation itself showed how useless that stupid thing is. A bunch of new, distracting animations? Always there? A new way to pause music--like we needed one? For crying out loud, if people get excited about such stupidity, well, just sad.

It’s fancy and all, but too big. I don’t like how it sticks down farther than the current notch. Despite having unique functionality, it feels like it actually takes away a bit of viewable fullscreen space.

mathematically is wrong..you have more pixels in full screen mode
the height and length of the notch is bigger than this pill, not talking about the iphone X->iphone 12 notch that the length was even bigger

I don't think is brilliant, is always a gimmick solution for a hole in the screen. At the same time it could be available also for olds notch iPhones, make a "dynamic notch" that works the same, but Apple needs to sell new hw and so this gimmick function will be exclusive for the most priced phone for a while. Meanwhile, it break compatibility with iPad, Watch, Mac, but who cares? Apple is a melting pot of new and old technologies, people don't care about it, people cares about trends.

My issue is that it’s further down the screen, blocking an area that was previously not blocked. Which means it sticks out more instead of being tucked as far away as possible. Currently, the bottom of the notch perfectly aligns with the bottom of the time and icons. The bottom of Dynamic Island extends below that line by about half at least.

Is there a pic with a good comparison?

Does anyone know of you can possibly set some sort of status light say for email etc in dynamic island?

I say this is the Touchbar rearing it's ugly head again 🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♂️
I bet Dynamic Island (sound like a cocktail sauce to anyone as well?) will go the same way as said dark feature or 3d touch in a few years.

Also, when will they start removing distractions instead of adding new beepers and blinkers?

It looks interesting but widescreen videos will look worse as the pill will cut into content.
For example, all MKBHD videos on YouTube are widescreen and are perfectly aligned before the notch.
The Pill cutout sits lower so it will be visible...

While I do agree their marketing seems pretty creative and clever on paper or in the keynote...

I am wondering how the variable-size "cutout" is going to look with glass screen protectors. Or any type of screen protectors, really. Most glass screen protectors used to have cutouts for the notch and sensors - I am not aware of any that covered camera lenses, and the speaker is obviously coverable.

As someone using a glass screen protector on an iPhone with a notch, I can't imagine the black "island" expanding beyond the edges of a screen protector to look anything but awkward.

Wonder how the dynamic island experience will be for someone like me who has a permanent plain black wallpaper on his iPhone.

anyone else notice that the pill is lower on the screen than the notch and the net usable space is actually WORSE with the new design? I like the creativity but am wondering if new features are better compared to the lost screen space when there is nothing to tap on the island?

The new screen has a slightly higher resolution as the pixels are smaller. Apple could certainly scale the image so that it doesn’t overflow the cutout. Any images out with it playing video yet?
