Usually I'm not keen on webcams but they've become a necessity for particular situations. As routine, I keep the iSight cameras on my Macs obscured so I wanted something external that could be easily connected and vice-versa.
The Logitech Brio 300 fit the bill because it has a privacy shutter that can be conveniently open and shut.
I found a boxed, brand new unit on eBay for £32 GBP - which is a
relative bargain considering that the 300 generally fetches more than double that price. The intention was to use it with my 2010 MacBook Air whose iSight camera is inoperable but in my haste to snag a bargain I overlooked the fact that it's USB-C only. Logitech doesn't provide an adapter either. No matter, I picked up a cheapo one through Amazon.
The minimum system requirements are Catalina - which my MBA has, so let's see if it works with the adapter...
Yup, it's detected and the driver is running.
Detected and working within Microsoft Teams. Now why wouldn't Logitech include an adapter so that their product can enjoy the maximum sales potential? This made me curious as to whether it's compatible with macOS releases below the advertised minimum version. Let's try Mojave...
Happily working! What about Snow Leopard?
Fully compatible with Snow Leopard despite Logitech stating that Catalina is the minimum macOS version. What about a PPC Mac and Tiger? For this test, I had to switch to an iBook G4.
Look at this - it works all the way down to PPC Tiger! An interesting case of false advertising and forced obsolescence. I hope this information is helpful to anyone who is looking for a newer webcam to use with an older machine but is worried about compatibility issues. Perhaps we could add the details to a sticky?
