I will take the cleaner look of OS X over the hot looking mess that is Windows 10. Brillant? Far from it.
Seriously. Windows 10 is all over the place UI-wise.

over the last 4/5 years has just bolted more and more stuff onto it's creaking foundations.

Seems like a perfect description of What MS has been doing with WinRT/Metro/Modern/Universal

Umm, Windows Server Core? PowerShell?? If you worked as a Microsoft Specialist then by default you would have been running commands all day long.
That would be because it takes an entire day to type 1 command...

I applaud Microsofts ongoing Powershell improvements but those looooooooooooooooooong commands really need to be fixed.

That shows how you know nothing about the IT profession. I won't try explaining to you how it even works. It will be a waste of time.

Yes, all Microsoft specialists are running Windows Server core only and use Powershell all day. I suggest that if you don't know something well, that you just keep quiet and listen to others that might know a bit more and might help you learn a bit..

Windows 10 blows OS X out of the water. Microsoft have released an OS that looks like it's from 2015.

Windows 10 still has applications and utilities which visually have not been updated since Win2k, then it has Modern apps and everything in between. If you take the OS as a whole, it is by far the most inconsistent UI of any operating system. It is an absolute mess.

Don't believe me? Go open "Disk Management" on a HiDPI (e.g. Retina) screen. Not only is not HiDPI, it looks almost exactly as it did a decade and a half ago. There are many examples like this.

I agree. Windows 10 might be better than Windows 8 (which was a big mess), but actually, it only tries to solve all the problems that Microsoft caused by their idiotic idea that all devices are the same and need to run the same OS, with the same UI. They messed up big time and what I don't understand is how people with IT know-how, that are being paid to create an OS, can make such a mistake. Everybody knew that Windows 8 could not work but Microsoft...
Windows 10 takes a step back to make Windows 7 users upgrade, but it also shows that Microsoft doesn't really want to admit how big of a failure Windows 8 really was, so they created something in between, with Windows 7 and 8 elements..I have used Windows 10 and I don't like it. There is absolutely nothing in it that could make me leave OS X.

Great usability, much visible to people with less-than perfect eyes, such wow.

(I understand changing the icon to a non-animated one extends the life of a Macbook battery by at least 30 seconds, but I'm on a desktop and can't switch it back on.)

Personally I find passive animations more of a dumbed down feature than simple arrows. I'm not trying to defend the OS but this is extremely trivial to me. Change it back and some folks will bitch that it was changed. There's no way to please everyone.

Jony "Stick Figure" Ive has simply decided to redesign the OS to cater to those who count:

Kim Kardashian
Kanye West
Paris Hilton
Sarah Palin
…the list goes on!

If you've got real work to do, go elsewhere!!

Congrats. With a comment like above you've just made your own list!

I have a very unpleasant feeling that Apple are slowly introducing the same idiotic idea... Launchpad + iOS icons + full screen mode for apps + notification center...

Totally agree.

Windows 10 is like a male dorm room when Mom is coming for a visit : It look clean at first, but when you actually try to do things in it you realize that he just pushed everything under the bed and into the closets.

Windows 10 look "cool", but when you actually use it, it's a complete mess.

Off topic, all the same nothing new here :) Once I was forced to use Windows, now you have to pay me, literally. If 10.11 proves to be as good and as stable as 10.10.5 it will be a "killer" At first I was not enamoured by Yosemite, however it`s performance and stability have won me over, should El Capitan step up the same, I will be seriously impressed.

I know many have had issue with 10.10, equally for me it`s been absolutely perfect across multiple Mac`s, never missing a beat, absolutely Rock Solid OS. As for W-10 good luck to those using, it`s not in my future thankfully...

Observation: There suddenly seems to be a lot of comparison between Windows and OS X in this thread. This was historically unheard of.

I personally couldn't stand Yosemite, but the changes, albeit subtle to El Capitan are, in my opinion, a definite improvement. Subtle 3D effects, plus they seem to have modified something with contrast or brightness. Maybe they're actually accommodating non-Apple external displays. There was something just not right with Yosemite.

I think I might actually be able to make El Capitan my new base OS. Assuming of course they fix the existing bugs in it (it's a beta, guys…don't start screaming!)

No, Apple is not doing the same thing here. They have a different approach. Both OSes are designed to work together, but at the same time are optimized for the devices they are intended to be used. Of course some features will be shared, but the great thing is that you don't need to use them. I for example do not use Launchpad at all. I don't see a need for it, but I am also sure, many others like to have Launchpad everywhere..

Everytime I am tempted to say I have never used Launchpad I half-expect 500 people to jump at me, say they use it ALL THE TIME and it is absolutely essential to their productivity ;)

Then again I use Dashboard all the time, so what do I know.

The problem is that there are people who are disliking yet another option because it makes things more complex. Any change you make, if it is adding or actually changing it, is the same as not doing anything: some people will applaud it, others will be (very) annoyed. In this case, adding it as an option will only move the problem because you'll now have a new discussion: what should the default be? People will always find something to their disliking and whine about it. It's an attitude problem which you cannot fix via hardware/software.

It's already there. Funny you mention fullscreen mode as this is a feature many users have been wanting for years. You just made a perfect example for what I stated above: they've finally added the feature lots of users have wanted for years and yet there are still people not happy about it. It has been said many times before: there is no way you can please everybody.

Observation: There suddenly seems to be a lot of comparison between Windows and OS X in this thread. This was historically unheard of.
That would be due to the fact that OS X ran on non-Intel for quite some time. Only as of 2006 did it run on Intel and with it came the ability to also install Windows next to OS X via Boot Camp. Back then Apple wasn't very popular but this has changed over the years due to the iPod, iPhone and iPad. It's these small things that let to the current situation where people are looking at a Mac when buying a new computer. And because of that people are also starting to compare it to other brands and thus to Windows.

Dashboard is one of the greatest, and most underutilized, feature of OS X. It's much better than having to lean over and try to find what you want on a dark, almost unreadable, narrow strip on the right side of the screen.

Dashboard never really took off. Personally I prefer the today view on the right side, mainly because it provides me a quick overview of information that interests me, without having to leave my current app, or dim it, as Dashboard does.
I would like though more options where the today view appears, or how big it can be.

NC might be useful for those who use laptops, but for those of us on iMacs, etc. it's not entirely useful. For me to use it on my 27" iMac I have to lean far to the right in my chair just to see the sodding thing.

I understand what you are saying. I also have a Retina iMac and sometimes I feel like it would be great to be able to reposition the today view and notification center anyway on the screen.

Just use color monki photo or another decent screen calibration tool, the built in tool has always been a joke for professional work...

In case no one's mentioned it yet (I didn't notice when reading through), to get Expert Mode in DCA;

Hold Option and click on Calibrate.

Concerning Dashboard: I feel like its biggest failure has been lack of modification. I shouldn't have to use the terminal to remove any app I want. If they're gonna have it at all why not at least allow it to be as customizable as it is on iOS if not more so. It seems like Apple have completely forgot it exists.

Whatever you do in I.T, it can't be very much. You complained you can't use the command line/commands in Windows, and I demonstrated that you can.
