Wonder if it has anything to do with the slot? I did swap it once to move it to an x16 slot vs. an x4 slot.

I wish I could grab a screenshot...

It's irrelevant to the slots, I've try that with my Sonnet Tempo SSD. And please take your time, there is no rush to get the screenshot.

SSD on the PCIe card should report as external, this never changed.
(It's not removable if it's the boot drive)
I have the opposite. In Yosemite the boot drive was hidden in El Cap it’s on the desktop.

For those of you that are experiencing kernel panics due to driver incompatibility with ElCap.. I believe I may have found a temporary workaround until manufactures release their updated device kexts/drivers.

If you upgraded from Yosemite and have not uninstalled the kexts/drivers before the upgrade
- Disable rootless, shutdown and reinstall the device then power up.

Fresh install of ElCap (Requires Yosemite kexts)
- Disable rootless, power up normally, restore kexts/drivers from a "Yosemite" time machine backup or extract using pacifist and install into System/Extensions then shutdown. Reinstall the device then power up.

Rootless appears to also disable non El Cap compatible kexts.

YMMV
A big issue is that some devs have not gotten the message of changed KEXT locations and signing with a special Dev signature that is enabled to sign KEXTs. This has been noted for more than a year.

Only Apple system KEXTs are allowed in /System/Library/Extensions
Add on 3rd party KEXTs go into /Library/Extensions

The problem is that between Lion and Yosemite/El Capitan, there are three different ways of signing and installing KEXts. So the installer needs to be smart about the OS and have two different KEXt versions to have it work on all. Folks upgrading directly from Lion will still have issues.

Edit: Everytime you choose 'Startvolume' have to click the lock and enter the password again, that's silly. o_O

in fact, it's not silly at all (security-wise). you could do all sorts of nasty things when booting from another volume. imagine being a user without administrative rights but the ability to chose another boot bolume. of course for this to work you also need to set a firmware password -> https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204455

My bluetooth just stopped working. 1 day after I upgraded. Could be unrelated but who knows.
the bluetooth says "not available" and no device is being detected in the system report.
MacBook Pro 15" 2012.

Of course the actual correct answer is, don't install El Cap if your workflow depends on things not supported.

Actually I know, and it makes sense for enterprise or public use. But all my machines are mostly for private use. There should be a command to deactivate this 'feature'. At all, the main security feature for my Mac's is still my house door. :) If you can get physical access to a Mac, this feature does not prevent one to reformat the whole drive. Of course setting a firmware password is effective in this case.

Another issue: Opening/mounting large DMG's is very slow. I have a Software Bundle dmg (MacUpdate Fall 2014 Bundle) with 864 MByte. On El Capitan mounting it takes very long (2 -3 minutes), in Mountain Lion it mounts immediately.

even when mounting for the second time after unmounting? maybe it only gets checksummed once at the first attempt to mount..?

You are right, it was the check summing. When mounting for the second time it opens immediately. So no issue.

I had an odd issue immediately after upgrading my 2009 MP (with GTX 970) today where I could not initially log in to my user account.

1. I entered the sudo nvram boot-args="nv_disable=1" command in Terminal and ran the installer. Mac Pro restarted.
2. Install took 20-30 minutes. Screen was dark the entire time, as expected.
3. The Mac Pro appeared in my MacBook Air's Finder. I initiated screen sharing and could see the login screen with my user and guest accounts.
4. I attempted to log in to my user account. However, after I entered my password, instead of the desktop or setup screens, I was sent back to the main login screen with the user and guest account options. Repeated several times, same result.
5. I logged into the guest account and went to the desktop. From there I was able to (a) install the NVIDIA web drivers and (b) reset boot-args. (I had to su to my user account, then entered the sudo nvram boot-args="nvda_drv=1" command).
6. I rebooted as part of the web driver install. Upon reboot my main display was active. I was able to successfully log in to my user account and finish the install (logging into iCloud, accepting terms and conditions, etc).

Moral of the story: make sure that the guest account is turned on before upgrading.

If you have a Caldigit FASTA-6GU3 (Non-Pro) you have to uninstall drivers before you upgrade to 10.11. The unsigned kernel extension (kext) for that PCIe card will crash OS X.

I did a fresh install of 10.11 with no drivers installed. Howsoever the USB ports of the FASTA-6GU3 don’t work anymore, there is not even power on the USB 3.0 ports. The eSata ports on the other hand work fine.

My other card, the FASTA-6GU3 Pro is working as usual, drivers in 10.11 already included. Also no problems with the Syntech PCIE Adapter.

I have been having rather frequent spinning beach balls that have been a real pain. I have a nMP but it's been migrated from a Mac Pro that had the FASTA-6GU3 installed and I believe the kext is still installed. How did you go about uninstalling the kext?

I didn't uninstall the KEXT's on my Mountain Lion volume, I did a new fresh install of El Capitan on a new volume.

But to answer your question, these are the old KEXT's for FASTA-6GU3 which make trouble:
/System/Library/Extensions/CalDigitFastIO.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext

This is the new signed KEXT for the FASTA-6GU3 Pro already included in El Capitan:
/Library/Extensions/CalDigitHDProDrv.kext

Problems with MS Office. My experience, MS Tech Support and a portion of an article in Computerworld.

"We know that some users may be experiencing issues with Office 2016 for Mac running on El Capitan," the statement read. "We are actively investigating the matter with Apple. Until there is a fix, we recommend people install the latest updates to Office 2016 for Mac using Microsoft AutoUpdate."

Computerworld's daily newsletters. ]similar message. "We are aware of the issue with Outlook 2011 on El Capitan and of Office 2016 on El Capitan," Jeelani wrote, referring to an already-admitted problem with Outlook 2011 -- the email client bundled with Office for Mac 2011 -- as well as the crashes afflicting users of the newer Office for Mac 2016.

"We are working on a fix for 2011, and for 2016, we are working closely with Apple to resolve this issue as soon as possible," Jeelani wrote. "Unfortunately, we do not have any timelines for either fix, please stay tuned and thank you for your understanding."

Do the known problems include frequent spinning beach balls when using Word 2016? I'm experiencing that and have been trying to narrow down the problem on my end.

Not had any issues with any of the Betas on my 3,1 and the public release has been rock solid too. Just installed an Apricorn Velocity X1 this morning and it booted first time too.

Only problem I'm having is Pixelmator isn't rendering anything properly with the Nvidia WebDriver or the Native Driver on my GTX 650 which I'm hoping is a Pixelmator issue in 10.11.

Easily the best release so far, performance is incredible.

All systems: Mail has a bug with entering group addresses. If you enter the group name and follow with TAB or RETURN, there is a good change it will crash the app. RIGHT-ARROW works.

Mac Pro 5,1 modified with an updated Apple WiFi/BT LE card: Handoff is shown as available in the General Preferences and BT shows support in Systems Report, but it does not work. Sometimes, outgoing Handoff is visible on other systems. This work flawlessly, when booting in to Yosemite.

Both have been reported on bugreport.com since earlier betas. There appears to have been some work on it, but in the end Apple had to ship...
I added a thread on the Continuity/Handoff issue in the Apple Support forums. I am not alone!
Resetting iCloud only cost me two hours several days of download congestion to update the mail and Photos again. But it did not fix the problem.

Just Posting Microsoft's Replete issues with Outlook 2011 and Office 2016:

Logging out of iCloud to to try to fix the issue had a second repercussion: all my ApplePay cards were nilled out. Adding them back in turns out to require calls, the old text verification is not working.

Do an SMC Reset - power down, unplug the supply, wait 15 secs or more, plug it back in, wait 5 sec or more, and boot.
It should restore the config. It has worked for me several times. I had this issue once with El Capitan.
It also seems to happen at times going to Lion and then booting back in Yosemite or El Cap.

cheers

No problems, even fixed my problem with the crashing Internet accounts control panel.
