Ha Ha Ha... Should have expected a fellow Texan to say that one. I love it...

How about El Chupacabra? :)

Was/is Drake the name of an operating system?

I'm your senior by around seven years and I share your nationality (the design of MacRumors, showing locations with every post, positively encourages us to talk about geographies); I think first of Sir Francis.

Maybe Drake OS is better known in the west of England.

Drake is a canadian rapper, he was on the sprite commercial a few years ago, and Forever with Eminem and Lil' Wayne.

Honestly, it should've been OS X joshoua tree. That would be a silicon valley episode.

When Apple first released Mavericks I had no idea what it was, I assumed it was a place but had no idea where it was. The Yosemite came along and I'm sitting there like what is that? Then obviously I found out. Im Australian so I had never heard of El Capitan but I say OS X El Capitan, it sounds better than OS X El Cap but if your talking about the Apple OS's I might so OS X El Cap but normally i just say "El Capitan/Yosemite/Mavericks" when referring to Apple OS's, because most Australian people know what your talking about.

I'm curious to know what people say. As a California native I personally say El Cap.

El Cap? That makes it sound like a gel cap or something (and means nothing in Spanish). El Capitan is the THE CAPTAIN (in this case named after the mountain in California) and how can that not be a cool name unless you don't like Spanish? If they called it 10.11 Picard all the Star Trek fans would eat it up, for example. Q called Picard "Mon Capitan" (French for my 'My Captain') so that's what I tend to think of when I see El Capitan since Captain is spelled the same in French and Spanish.

I really just picture a bunch of apple guys sitting around at lunch and placing a bet on the most ridiculous name to call OS X 10.11. I then just imagine them cracking up somewhere with beers in hand as apple released the name at the keynote.... That or it was bring your kid to work day at apple and let the kids decide.

As a 43-year old Brit, I had a similar confusion with Drake. (Yes, I'm old and out of touch.)

I think I'll be calling it by the full name.
Most photographers would instantly love the name :) Love the Leslie Thomas avatar :)

I'm wondering how long it will be before someone is calling it El Crapitan :)

I wish Apple had just called it El Cap.
No, because then they wouldn't be calling it what it actually is, especially since it's a historical landmark of Yosemite National Park. Same as how people get flustered when someone calls San Francisco "Frisco". It's a shortened made up name and to many native San Franciscans it's an insult.

May I ask how you got an OS a few years ago that wasn't in existence? Or was that a typo?
It was supposed to be a joke; this thread was created the day the name of The Cap'm was revealed, and I thought the implication that people already had time to nickname/abbreviate it was vaguely humorous.

As someone who lives on the other side of the country I have no idea what 'El Capitan' was.

Or el cap - I just can't see myself using the full name

I live two states away from California, and I didn't know it was a place. It's a lousy name from a lousy naming scheme.

Didn't any of you guys hear about the freeclimbers who scaled El Capitan earlier in the year? Was all over the news in the UK.

But I don't get why they went Mavericks>Yosemite>El Capitan. Where's the logic?

No I didn't, perhaps I wasn't paying much attention. I have seen Yosemite in the news lately but its mostly due to bear attacks, nothing that I've noticed regarding El Cap.
