No, because then they wouldn't be calling it what it actually is, especially since it's a historical landmark of Yosemite National Park. Same as how people get flustered when someone calls San Francisco "Frisco". It's a shortened made up name and to many native San Franciscans it's an insult.

LOL. I don't know anyone who's used "Frisco" in the last 20 years, but regardless, it's totally unrelated. El Cap is what everyone who frequents Yosemite calls it. It's what climbers call it. It's much more insulting to listen to a bunch of people mispronounce El Capitan than it is to hear them say El Cap. AND it's a SOFTWARE release, not a re-naming of the mountain.

That's funny how you completely dismiss my point just so you can be "right".
It doesn't matter what "people" call Elcapitan in regards to the Yosemite landmark. The fact remains "EL Cap" is not the name of the OS. This nonsense of calling the OS out of it's name reminds of some idiots calling OS X (OS EX) or calling the iPod Touch an "iTouch". It's getting to a point where it seems as though it's done purposely to mock and discredit Apple.

Actually, what I said in my original post was that I wished they'd named it El Cap. If they had, that would be the name of the OS, would it not?

And your "point" seems to have changed. Your new point seems to be that you don't like nicknames. Okay, good for you.

FTR, since you're so high and mighty on calling things their full, actual names, neither the name of the mountain NOR the name of the OS is Elcapitan, it's El Capitan. Just sayin', if you're going to call someone out, might want to get it right.

Wow, why is everyone so worked up over a nickname. I'm retired military/polioce and I didn't mind when people called me El Tee or later on, Cappy. I call OS X 10.11 "Cappy" because I'm comfortable with it. I've not found anyone who was offended and/or didn't know what I was talking about. I just don't see the big deal. It's just not that important in the grand scheme of things.

Now that I think about it, since they added metal, I wish they had named it "Iron Man" ;), then it would even have it's own song by Black Sabbath.

But it's not named "EL Cap" right? Exactly.

Your post is so full of rudeness. It has nothing to do with being "High and Mighty". I call things they way they are named. And then you correct my spelling. You need to chill, seriously.

And some people continually strike me as drinkers of the Apple Juice that is fanaticism that you get SO upset about someone calling OS X "OS EX" (to the point where they are calling them IDIOTS). My god, could people be any more pretentious? I seriously doubt it. No wonder Macs had a "Yuppie" or "Bohemian" reputation in the '80s and '90s. I mean "mock and discredit" ??? Really? For shortening a word, they are trying to "mock" the god that is Apple?

What a discussion.

Ok, pressing question: I have been in the park and seen it in real life. Am I allowed, or better is it appropriate for mere tourists to abbreviate it as El Cap? :D

In other words, trying to find out if it sounds weird when used by someone who's first language isn't english.

Idk, looks weird.

Since the rock formation is called El Capitan and not El Cap, whenever someone would say "Have you seen El Cap?" makes it looks like you are trying to say it in an urban "slang" ish way, imo.

I would pick El Capitan over El Cap any day, but again, thats my opinion.

Do yourself a favor and look for a fight to pick with someone else. I must've struck a nerve. Sounds like you're the one that's actually upset. Chill.
