Nice setup there SHNXX.

So what beans is everyone having these days?

I'm doing some Guatemala Volcan de Fuego Guacatepeque and Brazil Dry Process Fazenda IP Yellow Bourbon, along with two other in rotation (and 4 more in the roast cycle).

I'm too lazy to roast so I just buy from local roasters different flavors depending on the mood.
Kklatch coffee when I order online.

I'm using three blends in my roast cycle, all from Sweet Marias...Espresso Monkey Blend, New Classic Espresso Blend, and Liquid Amber blend. I really like the Liquid Amber, so I repeat that a bit more often.

You're fortunate to have a local roaster...all I have is Starbucks!

I do have a local roaster, but I hesitate to buy from him each time I decide to try it out.

Shrink: You keep mentioning the Liquid Amber, might throw that one in for my next Sweetmaria's order.

I don't think you'll be disappointed (at least I hope you won't!)...I like it in a Vienna roast.

The Liquid Amber is amazing stuff. The best espresso blend I've ever had.

So what beans is everyone having these days?

I've tried various sorts and blends in the last year and most of them I liked. But for drip and more so Press, I just can't find a blend that tops the Canadian chain Tim Hortons that I like better. Their whole beans coffee smells and tastes so darn good to me. It's like a little breath of Heaven every time I open the Friis container for a scoop of beans to put into the grinder. ☕

I'm currently working my way through my stash of Brazil Fazenda do Serrado PN Yellow Bourbon beans. I usually only roast one type at a time, and I tend to buy sampler packs from Sweet Maria's because I just love tasting new beans...

Nice! Definitely going to try Liquid Amber. I have heard the name Tim Horton's before but never tried it.

I roast about 4 at a time and work through them weekly. I have the IP Fazenda (second one), never tried the Serrado PN.

All this talk about coffee is making me want to drink some fine drip right now.

This seems to be a rather universal reaction to spending some time on the thread!:p

Enjoyable reading. The other thread. Wow.

One comment on roasting. I strongly encourage visual inspection of the beans post-roast. The first crack, especially, is not always uniform, because of variable water content in the beans. A small fraction of beans will end up with a physical crack that is longer and deeper than the others, and that greater exposure to the interior of the bean will overroast the bean. Some defects are readily apparent, but not all, and I find a magnifying glass useful. Just a quick inspection, takes 5 minutes. Overkill, perhaps, but necessary to chase a god shot. On Liquid Amber, I toss 10-20% of the roasted beans. (Actually I ave them to run through the grinder post cleaning.)

I am dealing with some health stuff and hope to be back regularly soon. Y'all hang in there and, sheesh, those k-cup threads. My god.

Hey, Buddy!

Good to hear from you!:D

Not to pick on a guy in a weakened condition (actually the best time...he can't fight back!:p) but you are even more compulsive than I am. I'll give your technique a try...but I have to admit it's a bit more effort than I am usually willing to put out. I'm sure that dumping some "damaged" beans produces a better roast batch...but sheesh!:p

It's great to be able to be rude to you again...you have been sorely missed, my friend!:D

Get well, and then feel free to retaliate!

Actually...just get well, Mate!

In a coffee shop.
Kurwenal, welcome back, (I wasn't aware that you have been unwell, but if that was so, allow me to wish you a speedy recovery and a happy, fruitful and caffeine-fuelled recuperation.)

Shrink, my good friend, I imagine that it comes as a greater source of surprise to you than it does to me, (and I admit to considerable surprise), but is it possible that you have found someone even more dedicated to the arcane arts of perfect coffee production than your ineffably good self?

And now, at the risk of sounding like a mere dilettante, and worse, a heretic, and lacking a sufficiency of fanatical fervour, I took a look at the Sweet Maria's site (as endlessly recommended here) last night.

The whole idea of green coffee beans appeared to take up quite a bit of space on the site, along with much discussion on the whole process of home roasting. Very commendable. However, as a matter of idle enquiry, does Sweet Maria's ever roast any of their own offerings, not least the fabled "Liquid Amber"?

On occasion they do, and I was lucky enough to get a batch of Liquid Amber once late last year. One really needs to be on the ball when they announce via email or on the site when they're going to do a roast.

Thanks a lot; perhaps some kind soul could let me know when this is set to happen, so that I might be able to sample some of their offerings?

If my reading of the website is correct, they send different varieties of coffee when they actually do get around to roasting a batch….

Hence, managing to obtain some of this fabled Liquid Amber (already roasted) seems a feat of combined luck and timing…..

No doubt Shrink will let us know, as well as mobilehaathi who has a keen ear to their site would too. I don't visit the site much, but if I happen to see the sale, I'll say something too. :)

I do my best to notify here when I see roasted beans available. Although I have been sticking with the green ones as of late, I'm planning to buy a few lbs of roasted for family in the coming weeks, so I should be paying a bit more attention.
