Shrink, SandboxGeneral and most of you other mad coffee people. Have any of you tried MistoBox? http://www.mistobox.com/

They seem to send out 4 roasts monthly (I see some good roasters on their list, Verve/Klatch) and you lucky folks stateside can get quite a fill of varied coffee goodness monthly!

On a side note, i've ordered enough coffee to last me 2 months at least, but after that i'm thinking of trying Stumptowns Hair Bender and perhaps something else. Does anybody have any experience with Handsome Roasters?

Aha! I knew we would manage to reel you in……..(cue maniacal laughter). There is no hope for you now, having dipped a toe in this thread.

On a more serious note, you are most welcome, and thank you for your reply (and advice) in the other thread.

This morning, in central Asia, where the days are steadily getting warmer, my French press played host to some Intelligentsia coffee……and I played host to some colleagues, sitting outside, at a coffee table in the dappled shade……is there a better or nicer way to do a spot of bureaucratic house-keeping? I very much doubt it.

You sir, are a generous being! I usually reserve my Intelligentsia for myself and serve my colleagues/friends other blends (qualitatively speaking). But the Black Cat is MINE ALL MINE AND MINE ALONE!!!

Ahh, nope. I've not heard of them, but will promptly go have a look. Thanks! :)

Apologies, apologies indeed! :)

Hey! Welcome to the thread of the deeply strange!

Wonderful to have your suggestions about bean sources. Folks are always looking for new sources of beans.

Your slightly insane protectiveness of your Black Cat coffee fits so perfectly with the twisted inclinations of those posting here...I hope that you will stay with us an pass along other tips you might have about your coffee mania.

I'm sure our wonderful friend Scepticalscribe will forgive your gender error...it's so hard to tell from writing alone. She keeps us immature boys in line with her informative and literate posts.:D

Thank you for your kind words, my friends. And gender identification errors are always forgiven……...

There are several different ways in which one can enjoy a cup of coffee, or espresso.

First of all, there is the "Coffee of Utter Urgency", that driving desire to somehow ensure that the first espresso of the day is imbibed, ingested, consumed, as rapidly as possible. The circumstances dictate the company, and very often, (although not always), my first espresso of the day is consumed in complete silence. Either by myself, or in company, a bubble of solitude is a necessary prerequisite for enjoyable drinking.

Then, there are the solitary espressos consumed during the course of the working day, or, at week-ends. These can be while reading a newspaper, a book, one's computer, simply watching life stroll (or rush) by around you; if someone seeks to join you, you will, of course, welcome them, unless solitude trumps company. This is the daily "Coffee of Easy Contemplation".

And then there are coffees made, (or bought), which which are planned to be consumed in company; these are different from the start. Proper cups and coasters are laid out, as well as sugar for those who want it. Teaspoons, and elegant biscuits. Some drinking water for everyone.

Coffee drinking at the collective level, can take many forms, from utter shared pleasure, to creating a more pleasant atmosphere in a professional environment.

So, this is a vast category, sometimes difficult to accurately determine on first glance, as, inevitably with such an activity, there is considerable seepage and overlap between specific categories…….

And so, it is here that you will find variants such as "Relaxed Coffee In Good Companye". However, there are also the the sub-varieties called "Coffee in Office Company", along with the very specific and precise sub-section known as "Espresso With The Boss".

Other versions which are known to occur in a professional environment are "Coffee as Lubrication to Necessary Conversations" which include the sub-sections of "Coffee As Aid To Information Gathering", "Coffee As Network-Builder", "Coffee As Social Lubrication", as well as the inevitable cross-over variant "Coffee As Offering A Context To Pouring Your Heart Out On Someone Else's Sympathetic Shoulder Or Into Someone Else's Sympathetic Ear."

Whoever said that this was simply about consuming a cup of coffee somehow overlooked the complexity at the core of the coffee-drinking universe…...

Gracious!

I had never considered the complexity of the drinking part of the process. The "making" part is complex...and now the "drinking" part is revealed to be equally complex!

Thanks for the delightful and light hearted post! A wonderful chuckle was had, always making for a better day...a lot like a fine espresso!:D

Cool service! But unfortunately I've been plugging away roasting my own in a repurposed popcorn popper...I thought caffeine was supposed to protect against dementia...

It is, it is. A whole new science, which I have had time to study (in-depth) in my current place of work, which offers a very specific laboratory - not to mention the exact conditions for a controlled environment - for such detailed and exact observations…….

I forgot to 'bold' the sub-category "Coffee As Social Lubrication", (which tells me more than is good for my peace of mind exactly how high a priority I place on this!). And in the "Crying On Sympathetic Shoulder Or Pouring Personal Problems In Sympathetic Ear" category, my almost permanent presence in our coffee shop, as one sits and listens and creates a subtly welcoming environment, means that I get to be the recipient……..not the sad soul who needs to vent.

And I usually buy the coffees, too…….but when someone else offers, "The Boys" (about whom I have not written for some time) don't even need an instruction, merely an explanation that the coffee is for me…..Perfection in a cup, in Paradise……What is there not to like?

Yes, and thank you for adding this - "Coffee As A Means To Maintain Consciousness" is another - and vitally important, not to mention occasionally over-looked, category of the coffee-drinking universe.

This is a category where the person consuming the coffee can do so in solitude (often either trying to come to terms with the world on a cold dark, dismal day, or, faced with a deadline and an impossible work-load).

However, in company, (office company especially), this variety tends to be consumed at the (much needed, desperately longed-for) coffee breaks in deadly meetings, you know, those awful meetings where the audience is comatose, the speaker Very Important and Utterly Oblivious, the seconds hand on your wrist watch crawling bizarrely slowly as the elasticity of time takes on a whole new dimension where it seems to stop entirely; these are those ghastly meetings that come complete with lengthy and ill-written presentations, the ones best described as "Death By Powerpoint".

This is where "Coffee As A Means To Maintaining Consciousness" comes into its own. Needless to say, it is an absolutely vitally important sub-section of the working world. My grateful thanks for rectifying my unfortunate omission.

Hi everybody, my name is powerslave12r and I roast my own beans.

Hey...WELCOME to the looney bin!:D

If you have the patience to read a few back pages, you'll find that we love to talk about all aspects of coffee, and it's various methods of production...and share ideas, information, experience, and some extreme silliness!

Caveat: Abandon hope all ye who enter here...your bank account is in mortal danger!

As far as your machine goes...remember that in descending order of importance

THE BEANS
THE GRINDER
Proper dosing and tamping.
The espresso machine.

And if you hang around this thread for a while...you'll start looking at upgrades!

Welcome! You'll find many crazies here, in particular a certain flat headed espresso fiend with an all manual set up...

Crazies!? Crazies!? That "flat headed espresso fiend" designation is...well...actually pretty accurate.:p

That's where I get my beans. A suggestion, just in case you haven't tried it, you might want to order some Liquid Amber Blend, which I like to roast to a Vienna roast. A full City+ is good too, but I like the Vienna.

I think that there may be a number of us on this thread who readily succumb to the siren lure of subtly (or overtly) encouraging vicarious expenditure - i.e. living at a remove through the joyful spending experiences of somebody else.

Mind you, it takes on a whole new dimension, when the person who actually spends the money has been enthusiastically supported in the economic adventures by the denizens of this thread…...

Or, perhaps, it is simply a matter of prioritising what one spends on what may seem like ludicrous sums of money on…….and for some here, there is no such thing as an upper limit where the planned, or (worse) spontaneous, expenditure on matters related to coffee are concerned….

I have little doubt that if I had extra funds available, I'd have more and arguably, better coffee gear of my own. No doubt all stemming from this very thread, from among my dear friends! :)

Yeah...support group!

I think that last part is all that matters.. Step 12 = great coffee.

Yeah...support group!

12 Steps to total insanity and bankruptcy...but great coffee!:p
  1. We admitted we were powerless over lethargy—that our lives had become decaffeinated.
  2. We came to believe that a fresher cup of coffee could restore us to sanity.
  3. We made a decision to turn our kitchens and our lives over to the preparation of Coffea arabica.
  4. We made a searching and fearless inventory of the best beans on the planet.
  5. We admitted to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our quest for the God Shot.
  6. We were entirely ready to pull a God Shot, removed of all defects of character.
  7. We humbly asked Shrink to remove our shortcomings.
  8. We made a list of all persons we had harmed by serving instant coffee, and became willing to craft a perfect cup for each one in order to make amends.
  9. We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would require meeting at a Starbucks.
  10. We continued to pull practice shots, and when they were under-extracted, promptly admitted it.
  11. We sought through study and meditation to improve our conscious contact with a God Shot, seeking only for knowledge of its creation and the power to regularly pull one.
  12. Having had a caffeinated awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to the decaffeinated, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
