Yes, switching from very warm, or even hot weather to more cold weather will come as a shock to the body. But as you describe, the Autumn's here in the Great Lakes and New England, are really nice with the trees turning colors, the crisp cool air with low humidity. It's great to sit outside and enjoy coffee, or even a hot tea.

The Great Lakes have a fall feeling in the air but we'll still get our glimpses of summer every now and then. I sought out nature this afternoon after sharing a short espresso with friends at the end of lunch.

And how, pray tell, do you expect to hibernate with all that espresso running through you?

Surely you won't abstain from coffee!

An apt question, and one which occurred to me, too…...

IV espresso drip in one arm...IV barbiturate drip in the other.:D

Surely they might serve tp cancel one another out?

On that topic, when I am in espresso drinking mode, (say, my four or five a day of double espressos, lovingly prepared by 'the boys'), I have no difficulty on falling asleep, or nodding off, or, or…….

What about the rest of you? Do many espressos interfere with sleep? For me, they don't, so I suppose hibernation with an espresso drip attached could indeed, work….

Ah, so you also have that feeling of 'autumn in the air'? Is it not a little early? My brother, when I arrived back from far warmer climes the day before yesterday, offered the opinion that autumn had chosen to make an appearance almost a month early…..

Although I don't find that a double will effect my ability to nap immediately after consumption...just on general principle I don't drink any after about 2 hours prior to bedtime.

As with any addictive substance, one developes tolerance with caffeine. The more you take on a regular basis, the less the body reacts to each dose.

No, espresso or press coffee doesn't affect my sleeping habits - but stress does. I can drink a cup of coffee and have had an espresso in the evening and go to sleep fairly easy.

No, Autumn is not in the air here quite yet. Perhaps a few more weeks from now, into mid to late September before it really begins in my area.

It's in the air! We had a cold week that just ended. For the first time this summer, the evenings required more than a light long sleeve and we had a 3-4 consecutive days without the A/C. A feel the temperature has changed here over the last few years. We already witnessed the top of a few maple trees go from vibrant green to displaying shades of yellow over the weekend. Today we are back to summer but every now and then, if you pay close enough attention to the breeze, you can begin to feel that the air is already a bit cooler as you breathe it in. The warm Sun masks any hint that the temperature is changing but you know it is already on its way.

Hmmm, I try not to drink much coffee after 3pm (I average ~3 cups/day), but I find that a cup after dinner won't bother my sleep too much. I'd attribute that to a relatively high tolerance to caffeine. There was a time back in school when I averaged 6+ a day, and I strongly suspect it was the withdrawal that occasionally disturbed me rather than that final cup. ;)

Nice to know that none of you are even remotely affected by insomnia (as neither am I) irrespective of quantities of espressos consumed……

I agree that it probably has much to do with increased tolerance……certainly, my tolerance developed when I was at high school, climbed further when I was sent to France as a teenager to study French, and has remained exceedingly high ever since…..

SBG, I think you may lie further south than the northern climes I was describing.

BenTrovato, when he suggests that autumn has come in about three to four weeks early; it just strikes me that modish August is a little early to experience the chillier nights…...

Tonight, I am in central London, and all I can think of is getting a good - and early - night's sleep so I can enjoy seven hours of high class drama in the company of good friends tomorrow (and yes; these tickets too, were bought months ago, as these performances sold out rapidly….)

I am sorry you are under the weather. Must be something going around. I've been moving slowly myself today.

Just a tad warm eh? 66 here right now after a t-storm went through.

Yes, if I roasted outside, I could probably cut 3 minutes off my regular 17-minute roasting cycle. Of course, I would melt during the process.....

A lot of locals switch to cold brew coffee in the summer. Wimps.

Yup, wimps!

I don't like cold brew coffee or cold coffee drinks, yuck! Just give me the pure, hot stuff!

Yes. Agreed. I'm completely with you on this.

As (the famously cantankerous but quite moodily brilliant Prussian philosopher) Immanuel Kant - a dedicated aficionado of coffee and its caffeine fuelled universe - is supposed to have remarked when explaining how he liked his coffee, that he preferred it "black as the devil and hot as hell"…...

I should make up an Immanuel Kant sock puppet and show up in those "crappy coffee is good coffee because it's easy" threads.....

Hello guys/gals!

I'm sorry that Scepticalscribe is not feeling 100%, but once you start feeling better you can transition to a Yuanyang (Coffee mixed with black tea) then pure coffee :)

I come seeking knowledge oh great ones:
I just made an espresso with steamed milk 1:1 and have a question, I always knew this as cafe au leit, but was wondering what is the difference between a cafe au leit and an antoccino? Is it that cafe au leit is a less specific term or is antoccino a new hipster term?

Café au lait is made with coffee and milk not espresso. ;)

Antoccino is the espresso with steamed milk in equal portions. Cafe au lait is generally a fair bit of regular coffee with milk added.

umm interesting, I always thought cafe au leit was for either dark coffee (@ home) or espresso (@ cafes) w a 1:1 ratio of heated or steamed milk. I learned the term and meaning from my grandma that speaks french as a first language so maybe a difference in US vs rest?

So how old is the term Antoccino? Where did it come from?

Not sure about antoccino, although I suppose I'd guess Italian. Café au lait is literally French for "coffee with milk."

Doesn't matter too much to me what you call your beverages though, as long as it is excellent.

I heard antoccino for the first time in my life a week ago so I was left with this pondering question on the history of the word and the differences from other milk coffees. I'm a tea nerd not a coffee nerd.

yes, that is the correct word by word translation, espresso is a type of coffee though. AFAIK as I learned it, is a gen. term to mean strong coffee w heated milk, can be dark or an espresso. I have gone to cafes and ordered a cafe au lait and gotten an espresso with milk.

So what do you call an espresso with steamed milk? espresso with milk? I wil ask my grandma when I skype her tomorrow on my daily call to see what she has to say about it.

I just did a right click look up on the word espresso and in the wikipedia part it says: "Espresso is the base for other drinks, such as a caffè latte, cappuccino, caffè macchiato, cafe mocha, or caffè Americano" then right clicked latte and said "a drink made by adding a shot of espresso to a glass or cup of frothy steamed milk."

Ahh, depends on the ratio of espresso to milk to foam. ;)

Hmmmm there is a graphic around here somewhere....

Nice picture chart, thanks, saved.:) I do find some problems with the spanish ones like for example a cortado is made w/ warm milk not foamed milk; my guess the graphic is the americanized ways of espressos. Funny fact living w people all around me that adore cortados and cortaditos is that some places will inverse the ratio of milk and coffee on the cut when asking for one.

I went full wikipedia on cafe au lait and it said espresso as the base (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Café_au_lait). In the chart I don't see anything close to a 1:1 for espresso with heated milk. BTW I'm not trying to be argumental or anything :) Just want to up my knowledge on coffee. A nice tasting drink no matter the name is the best thing for sure!
