Excellent, I am delighted for you, and delighted that you are enjoying your wonderful new Gaggia, and adding amazing coffee making to your skills as well….

Agreed; this thread is an amazing and wonderfully interesting resource, in addition to always and invariably offering the sort of ambience that is reminiscent of the reliably cosy and welcoming comfort of a favourite sofa or armchair…..

So glad you're enjoying the Gaggia. I, too, found it a wonderful step up from my cheapy De Longhi, which was fine for a first starter machine...but the Gaggia is a far superior starter machine.

When I started, this wonderful and informative thread didn't exist...so I faked it. It's great that the information available to you on this thread led you to a machine that is giving you so much pleasure.

Enjoy!:D

But the days of (some of) the rest of us successfully 'faking' it are now likely well and truly over now that both your good self and Mr Kurwenal are there to put us on the right road for espresso nirvana.

A warm welcome back, and it is very good to see you here again on this thread - if you are posting about espresso you must be feeling a lot better!…..

Thank you, Dear Lady, for the welcome back. It is wonderful for me, too, to have all the information provided by everyone...there is always more for me learn!

I've just heard of this substance you call "espresso". It seems to be quite popular here. I gather it is a form of coffee. As a Taters Choice and Folgers Crystals fan myself, I'm eager to learn of other tasty espresso instant crystal.

Where might I try this espresso stuff?

Are there other wise guys on this thread!?:p

Well, espresso is said to be something of an acquired taste, something that people (equipped with human taste buds) in general find that they need an apprenticeship of (years, sometimes) to adequately begin to master and appreciate.

Some start their journey into the world of coffee and espresso via the use of unmentionables such as the product best left undescribed which goes by the name of 'instant coffee'; others come to their belated coffee initiation via the charred, occasionally incinerated - sort of burnt - offerings of the SB chain.

To true aficionados, neither route can be regarded as having embarked upon The True Path to Espresso Enlightenment………both, however, are not unknown as a path taken by some whose first tottering steps towards may well have included these, er, detours…...

Welcome, again, to The Thread of threads. We can help you quite easily here. First and most importantly, open your wallet and we'll get started in helping you choose some reasonably priced equipment.

How far open must my wallet be opened?

The only equipment I need right now is a pan to heat the water for the Folgers. It won't be much more that that for this espresso stuff, will it?

I can get those nice supermarket ground "espresso beans" in a nice "espresso roast", right?

How far, you ask? Well, why don't you open it up fully and then turn it upside down and allow everything, including the bats, to fall out. That might be enough to get you a good batch of beans. We're going to have to ween you off of this supermarket stuff first.

Yes, of course you can, even though there are those who will tell you otherwise…….

Well, there is no doubt about it; on this thread, wallets tend to receive a mugging, a serious, severe mugging.

Actually, I can let you in on a little known secret, now. believe it or not, there are those who dwell here on this thread, whose chief forms of entertainment and recreation are the vicarious spending of other people's (doubtless hard-earned) moneys, preferably on caffeine related products.

Now, back in The Old Days, traditionalists used to bleat advice which often ran along the unimaginative lines of recommending that you: 'Lock Up Your Daughters'…….

Here, on this thread, my advice is somewhat different. Rather, I would argue instead, that, on this thread at least, one might contemplate locking up one's credit card (mine has been known to effect astounding escapes, usually in crowded, lively urban settings), and perhaps, attempting to padlock one's wallet.

Guessing I ought to say hello here. With over 4000 posts on here it looks like I've got plenty of reading to do!

Just purchased my first proper coffee machine - Gaggia Classic, Silvia steam wand, Iberital MC2 grinder, Motta tamper and Grindenstein Knock Out Box.

Im mostly making lattes as thats what I prefer, but I guess I should now try with other drinks.

Hello and welcome to The Thread! Looks like you have a nice setup there, and not unlike mine - we even have the same knock.

What kind of beans do you use and where do you get them? For the regulars here, there are a handful of roasters we like to buy from and a couple of us even roast our own beans (not me though). Here's a cool summary one of us made of the regulars not too long ago!

May I also extend a warm welcome to you; you'll find all manner of coffee discussions taking place here, from the sublime to the ridiculous, with every sort of coffee inspired idea which lies in between, as well…….

However: The mantra of some of our aficionados is a pair of words which are: "Burr Grinder", and, judging from your post, I think that this is an issue which you have already addressed…...

Thank you for the welcomes :)

I did some research on various coffee forums before purchasing my kit, I'm happy so far but it took a while to get it set up correctly, getting the grind to be fine enough, tamping pressure, time taken to dispense 1oz of espresso etc.

I now need to experiment with flat whites, cappuccinos etc instead of pulling lattes every day.

As for the beans, I'm using some that I got free with my purchases from http://www.happydonkey.co.uk. I can't recall what they are but I'll take a look tomorrow.

Let me extend my welcome to The Asylum!

It looks like you have a terrific starter kit, and certainly went the right route with both grinder and espresso machine. Although I only drink my espresso straight, there are many wonderful folks here who can make suggestions regarding milk enhanced drinks.

While the espresso based drinks are the favorites of many here, let me urge that you have the occasional straight espresso, just for the sake of variety...and to check that your espresso base is the quality that you wish it to be.

Again...WELCOME!:D

Ethiopiques.....life is good.

....

Love this coffee.

I started pulling this today. Huge lemon zest on the front with something a bit richer on the end. Loving it, but I'm still experimenting with the dose, grind, etc. :)

Thank you. I did sample an espresso on the evening of receiving my machine, and was wide awake all night! Probably best if I stick to early morning espressos :)

In time, you'll build up a tolerance to the caffeine and you'll be able to have a double and go straight to bed! ☕

Actually, that is quite true. You do build up such a tolerance.

When I was a student, - notorious, and not simply famous for my coffee consumption - or, more recently, whenever I am working abroad, my caffeine tolerance - and capacity, and consumption - all go through the roof.

A typical start to the day (which leaves me blinking, a little blearily, rather than still morosely semi-comatose) is at least one - and preferably two - double espressos. Further espressos and double espressos punctuate and mark meetings throughout the day. And, if a nice dinner ends the evening, so will another espresso…..

Oh yes, and I'm pretty much there myself. I can have a very late coffee and hit the sack right after and be in dreamy-dream land toot sweet.

Even while holidaying in the lovely south west of the UK two weeks ago, at around 11.00 pm, my lovely hosts would place a small French press, and a glass (along with the bottle) of port by my elbow, whereupon they would toddle happily off to bed, (having already put a hot water bottle in mine - I had complained of the cold - three months at 40℃ left me awfully sensitive to what my body felt to be cold) at which point I would open my MBA and address arrears of correspondence…..

Neither the generous supply of port, nor the very welcome nightcap of a small pot of coffee interfered, in any way, with my capacity to sleep soundly once I finally turned in….

My secretary brought a Kurig into the office and today I looked at one of the 'pods' and noticed the expiration date of the "coffee" and it said October of 2015.
