And in other unrelated news, @mobilehaathi and @Scepticalscribe should be thrilled the BBC has doubled down on their His Dark Materials series. If memory serves me correctly, you're both a fan of Pullman's novels.

Yes, I am indeed a fan of His Dark Materials - I even have an exquisite hardback edition of the books; what do you mean by "doubled down"?

Not sure what you’re talking about?

Indeed

It's not very common for an unaired series to get an extended first season order let alone a second season. Usually this happens after the first few episodes.

Edit: Oh, I see what happened. Neither of you were aware there was a planned series based on the books. Can't blame either of you. I only found out a few weeks ago myself. Not really keen on the genre myself, but I'm always good for a quality production.

I'm not American, so some expressions pass me by.

Anyway, I must say that I don't understand the term "double down" when used in this context. (An aside: I've only ever heard of this term used in the context of the current incumbent of the White House); please tell me what you are actually saying, as I still don't understand your post.

Ah, I see, nope I had no idea. Eh I’ll keep an eye out for it, but I’d much rather get my hands on the next two books.

He’s using a gambling term from blackjack that refers to doubling ones bet at a certain point in the game in exchange for taking exactly one more card.

BBC takes a risk going forward, but I can't think of any series by the Beeb that's ever been bad. The new Bodyguard series is bloody fantastic. Can't think of the last time a show had me at the actual edge of my seat.

Yes, I would are prefer to get my hands on the next two books, as well.

To be honest, I can't see where the "risk" lies; the books are classics, they are set in the world of British culture, and the BBC has a long and venerable tradition of bringing British classics to the small screen with respect for the original source material without drowning it in reverence and has long been able to inject drama and tension to such classics.

Not only that, they have a terrific tradition of producing seriously good acting talent, and usually manage to come up with brilliant scripts.

Anyway, Kenyan coffee coming up.

Ooooh, I wouldn't go as far as that!

Personally, speaking for myself, IMHO, all necessary caveats, lately a whole bunch of series were below par for BBC.

Picnic at Hanging Rock;
Gunpowder Plot;
Taboo (Tom Hardy's vanity project)…

All the above just style above substance.

I yearn for the 2006(?) Bleak House — best Dicken adaptation ever.
Wolf Hall… stupendous.

Documentary wise the BBC remain tops — at least when compared to stuff from the USA. ;)

But the rest is alas, just so many "game" shows and "celebrity-led" Mocumentaries… oh and *sigh* "Strictly Come Dancing"…

No wonder I don't watch much television anymore.

Oh, yes, Wolf Hall was superlative. Absolutely superb.

I also had the privilege of seeing it live (saw both Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies on the same day) in the Aldwych, performed brilliantly by the RSC a few years ago.

And agreed, Bleak House was outstanding.

Sipping Kenyan coffee as I write.

Actually, on Wolf Hall, and books to be published (such as the next two books in Philip Pullmans's new trilogy), I also must say that I am really looking forward to the publication of the third (and presumably, final) volume of Hilary Mantel's Thomas Cromwell trilogy, (Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies were the first two), to be called "The Mirror and the Light".

Mantel has promised "to bring it home in style", and I believe her; my understanding is that this may yet be published in 2019.

Oh boo!
I had it penciled in as being released in 2018…
Oh well, good things come to those who wait.

But I do not envy her the task. The first two are both peaks of writing, can she pull off the third? She'll have a mini Himalaya of her own. :)

Every few months, I find myself checking interviews with her, and so on, for updates and fresh news about this.

Earlier this year, she seemed to suggest (summer, autumn) 2019, whereas in 2017, she had said that she "hoped" it could be published by autumn 2018.

As for the TV series, what a stunning cast: Mark Rylance was spell-binding as Cromwell, as was Claire Foy as Anne Boleyn; mind you, Mark Gatiss and Bernard Hill (not to mention Jonathan Pryce and Anton Lesser) were simply superlative as well. And I loved the lighting, the costumes, the script, and the fact that it was shot - where possible - in authentic settings.

Even the soundtrack (Debbie Wiseman) - I have the CD - was superb.

Back to drinking some Kenyan coffee.

Leaving yesterday’s disappointment of no new SE behind me, but realizing that my next phone probably won’t be an iPhone.
This current Apple don’t understand me anymore :(
Well, I found a phone big as a credit card almost, under development. Interesting.
So when SE won’t get any further upgrades, or when getting slow. Another not iPhone it will be.
Unless they release a X Mini, of course ;)

Not worrying about that now, I’m enjoying my new Volcano beans from Guatemala and Nicaragua.
Very special, very full, earthy and yet very smooth with some taste of nuts. Some mild smoke taste in it too.

Absolutely my kind of espresso. Very delicious :p

Finishing up my last batch of Kenyan this morning, then, after a trip to the market, it’s time to roast some of the Kenyan peaberry I have in the queue.

Let me know how you find the Kenyan peaberry.

A few years ago, I bought some highly regarded peaberry coffee beans from Intelligentsia (now, I have forgotten whether they were central American or not, I hadn't then begun to explore Ethiopian coffees) and, to my regret, was somewhat underwhelmed.

Well, here at mi casa we're having a nice pot of King's Coast Coffee "Aztec Reserve", a Mexican variety that is very good. I've always been very pleased with the Mexican coffee's that I have had. They grow a nice bean down there.
