Converting me to coffee over tea would be like convincing you that instant coffee was delicious!

The only time I always and invariably opt for tea (over coffee) is when I am flying; for some reason, the altitude doesn't seem to affect tea the way it does coffee, and the quality of tea is always far better when flying at 30,000 feet plus (or around 11,000 metres).

I often take lengthy periods away from coffee and consume tea instead. This is mostly due to drinking too much coffee for a certain period of time out of habit. Even with high quality coffee, I still find myself craving the near-sensual warmth a cup, mug or espresso shot delivers. Even in the heat of summer.

When I can no longer make out minute flavors in whatever variety of bean I purchase from whatever region of the world, I know I've had enough and take a break from the mighty bean.

That said, when flying, I prefer tea. Usually earl gray, or pick out a tisane if one is offered instead. A few stiff drinks to loosen up, too.

Whatever is in tea seems to make it more suited for consumption at high altitudes, more so than coffee.

Even in Business Class (an occasional treat, especially if my work takes me across continents for weeks or months at a time), the coffee tends to be pretty poor, whereas the tea is often excellent.

Anyway, this morning, already, I have had two large mugs of Ethiopian coffee to aid my endeavours this day.

Colombian coffee for me this morning while reading the WSJ in the total silence of my house (well, with the exception of one of the cats that was eager to greet me). Definitely a nice way to start the day.

Yes, other than - possibly - agreeable classical music, I have come to think that silence is the best way to enjoy one's consumption of coffee.

David Lynch's coffee, Wall Street Journal, purring cat on the table, silence. Good start of the day.

Very good start to the day; cat, coffee, paper, and silence. Bliss.

Lamentably, chateau moi, I am almost out of Ethiopian coffee.

Therefore, it is clearly high time to make fresh contact with the Ethiopian Coffee Company.

Yep! I mean, cat was on the table already and barely acknowledged my presence, but you know... cats.

Ah! You must order asap! I can't imagine a more nightmarish scenario than being out of coffee.

There is something very relaxing - in an almost Zen way - about cats relaxing on the table, or nearby.

I have just phoned them.

Their buyer is out of the office (he will phone me tomorrow), and I had a chat with their very pleasant staff - they are a pleasure to deal with. However, as their stock is currently running rather low - they are due a large consignment of (fresh, new) coffees in the very near future, they thought it better for me to have a chat with there buyer tomorrow.

But this means that the I do place an order, it will not arrive before early to the middle of next week.

Perhaps, an emergency purchase from a small local roaster to see me over the week-end might and into next week may not be such a bad idea.

Absolutely. I am always fascinated at how many places they are able to make a comfortable, resting spot. From the sofa, to a chair, to a bag that was distractingly left on the floor, to a cardboard box, they really do enjoy the relaxed life. My youngest cat (1 yr old) loves to extend his body on the sofa, and leave one front paw and his head hanging from the edge; he can spend hours like that. Each time I see him I just want to close my eyes and meditate.

Yeah, it seems that you will have to get some emergency coffee, which is not bad per se. Sometimes taste buds require a small change in order to enjoy normalcy at its fullest.

Back on the bean as of this morning. Really enjoyed that first cup. Pure sensory pleasure juxtaposed with the cold morning or cold for a July morning. Did put me into a thinking mood mid-crossword. If the typical person didn't consume a pastry or biscuit with their morning or mid-morning coffee or tea, how many calories less would they consumer year over year compared to a prior year of control where they did eat a pastry or biscuit with their morning or mid-morning coffee or tea?

Don't mind the babble.

I think that a biscuit taken with coffee can be sub-divided further; when out, I will almost invariably have a biscuit (one is served on the saucer of the coffee cup in Belgium what an elegant, and supremely civilised practice) or perhaps, as a special treat, a slice of cake.

However, at home, unless it is a filthy November (or deepest, darkest, wettest, windiest winter's day), I will rarely indulge.

Now, a coffee at breakfast time - there is no greater pleasure - or, as a pleasant post-prandial cup, - no cake on the planet can equal the pleasure of such a cup of coffee.

New Orleans coffee this morning while reading the Off Duty and Exchange sections of the Wall Street Journal. Pleased to see a picture of Gianni Agnelli.
Also, had an early conversation with a moon landing denier. Very weak arguments on his part, I can report that I successfully converted him.
