Who uses their iPhone as a mobile phone? It's a pocket computer. Therefore we are exempt from having to offer USBC.

The reality is that the EU is already majory Android, iOS is very much a minority phone OS in the EU.Let ‘em have Android. 👊😁👍
It would not surprise me if Apple just goes portless. The issue for iPhone users would be that a port is better than wireless for charging in many cases, it would be iPhone users who would be hurt with an "inferior" product.Sure that's an option. Or better yet portless.

This is exactly what precedentis being set. I’m amazed how many sheep are pacified by their desire for a particular port to not realize that sooner or latter they will be on the opposite side of the cheerleaders, and it will be too late. Enjoy your favorite port, sheep.Politicians are not competent in technical matters. So on what basis did they make this decision?
People may be happy that device makers will be forced to use USB-C. But the problem is that now all future interfaces in Europe will be dictated by politicians. It won’t be dictated by consumer preference or technical benefits. It will be dictated by who can influence politicians.
That's where MagSafe comes in, Apple already prepared their revenue stream. Besides, the lightning chip has been reverse engineered that there are a lot of unofficial 3rd party lightning cables out there. I think Apple knew this, thus the creation of MagSafe. They just trickle things out slowly to ease the revenue shift.Yes but you have to buy lightning and no matter who you buy from they get a cut. Type-C will mean a huge loss so they will adjust accordingly.
It would not force someone who bought an iphone in 2023 or 2024 with a Lighting port to throw it out.Would the EU really enforce a directive that makes all products made before the late-2024 e-waste? That seems to run counter to what they are trying to achieve. Presumably would just be for new products released on or after a certain date?
When you sell that phone, you can give that person the cables you have if you wanted to or sell them. They don't need to go in the trash.* I have +10 USB to Lighting cables from having Apple devices for +10 years
* I have zero USB to USB-C cables.
This will just result in more e-waste.
Color me skeptic, but it might be Apple themselves joining the lobbying group to persuade the legislation for USB-C. Apple has made a move to USB-C on their mac's and ipads, so they definitely have the plan to switch to USB-C. But lighting is already engrained to the consumer, so maybe Apple decided to let the regulators become the "bad guy."Politicians are not competent in technical matters. So on what basis did they make this decision?

Yes.
I mean, yes, lobbyists will influence decisions. That's kind of the purpose of lobbyists.
Maybe the can add a EU surcharge of say $200How many USB-C ports have died on your Mac again?
THat's what I thought. 0. Do you know why? Apple doesn't nickel and dime on their stuff.
We are already close to complete wireless anyway. Charging is done via MagSafe. iOS now can sync completely via WiFi and iCloud. There's airdrop for file transfer. Wireless carplay is available. The only thing remaining is DFU mode since iOS doesn't have its own recovery mode . USB-C will linger probably for just a few years at best.I'm guessing Apple won't make this change until the iPhone 16. The regular iPhones will probably get USB-C while the Pros get thunderbolt over USB-C.
Hopefully this doesn't create a lock in on USB-C forever. Someday there will be something better and it would be unfortunate to have this in the way of innovation.
Well they could, but it would be economic suicide as ESIM barely exists in Europe. To retaliate Apple will take away their SIM ports.
Not really. Wireless charging is incredibly slow, and what about carplay? Very, very few cars have wireless carplay. Plus it's much easier to carry a USB cable when traveling instead of a cumbersome wireless charging dock.We are already close to complete wireless anyway. I don't disagree with you on personal use, but my point to the poster I replied to is that there is no "lock in" to USB-C because complete wireless solutions are already feasible. USB-C will be just a short transition for Apple imo, and it's probably already on their roadmap considering Apple already switched to USB-C on macs and ipads. There's nothing wrong with wires. Ask as audiophile, or a network engineer. Long live the wire.
They will have to switch next year with iPhone 15 models or they will end up in a situation where they can only sell the iPhone 16 line in 2024 in the EU (not that I wouldn’t welcome some simplification/ rationalisation of SKUs tho…).
Would be interesting to see if this prompts a refreshed SE model (in ‘mini’ design???) so they have a low cost device for sale. Would really welcome an iPhone 15 mini with USB-C with iPhone 14 chip myself![]()

They will switch to defend USB-C on day one when iPhone models with USB-C are announced. Can't believe there are still people defending Lightning, which is an objectively inferior port with 2.0 transfer speeds in the year 2022 when Apple is boasting about ProRaw footage and 1TB storage.
