Yes but you have to buy lightning and no matter who you buy from they get a cut. Type-C will mean a huge loss so they will adjust accordingly.
I wonder if the fact that requiring Apple to adopt USB-C will mean more profits will stay in the EU has anything to do with this legislation that is supposedly just about reducing waste and making it easier for consumers. ;)

I am assuming that this will cause ALL iPhones worldwide to go to USB-C, and Apple will not try to play games like the the CA vs. non-CA stuff the US automobile industry did in the 70’s - 80’s.

Great... faster charging speeds that I'll never use (prefer wireless) and faster wired data transfer that I haven't used in a decade. :)
I'm actually not a fan of MagSafe charging. I still prefer using a port-based charging system, especiall with the 20 watts I can get out of Aukey 20 W PD 3.0 charger.

Apple already have different models in different parts of the world - such as the differences in this years sim/esim. Perhaps apple could keep innovation going by only putting usb c on European iPhones. I would prefer them to keep improving lightning performance - so I would prefer the UK models to stick with lightning.

I would welcome USB-C on my iPhone but I object to EU nobodies imposing laws.

Anyway by more than two years time we will probably have all moved on to wireless charging. The vast amount of time the EU parliament spent debating this will be shown to be a total waste.
I don't think so. MagSafe wireless charging for the iPhone tended to heat up the phone quite a bit, something that coule end up shortening battery life. And Apple only supports 7.5 watt Qi charging, which is not much faster than using the original 5 watt/1.0 ampere USB charger.

Apologies if I missed it in article. Can usb c be used as a headphone jack in addition to charging and data cable? I occasionally like to use wired headset so lightning port eliminating the need for headphone jack was useful. Dont want to have to go back to that

The lightning port is essentially the same size as a USB-C port so it’s not as issue of saving space or whatever in the internal design. Apple are probably having issue with customers being able to buy USB-C chargers and accessories for significantly cheaper than they offer.
Lightning is significantly smaller than USB C and has proven to be much more durable. Usb c is a backward step for the iPhone.

Fair enough. With today's battery life, overnight charging and a wireless charging stand at my desk, I'm never in a hurry to charge. Plus the phone charges when connected to CarPlay during the commute.

This will stifle innovation and competition. For example, it will limit the desire to create connectors that are more efficient, faster, cheaper, easier to use than USB-C.
Yeah, because we’ve seen so much innovation in the connector realm in the past 10 years. 🙄

In addition, now we have to throw away countless e-waste from lightning cables, lightning chargers, and lightning accessories.
You don’t have to throw away anything. The lightning connectors you have today will continue to charge the devices you have today, as well as enable USB2 transfer speeds.

It will also increase costs for everyone because USB-C is significantly more expensive to implement than micro-USB or USB-A for cheap devices.
Citation needed. Also, consolidation into USB-C will enable economies of scale.

Maybe, just maybe. The EU know more about this than you do?
Maybe they have thought 'look at this plethora of different leads that aren't interoperable between different manufacturers', and maybe they have looked at the landfill all of this produces?

I'd prefer a little bit of the stifled innovation you claim, (which isn't necessarily true), as opposed to all these different leads and adapters and the Apple tax you pay for lightning.
At some stage you would have had to bin lighting, after all we binned the old dock connector. Why not now for a better universal standard?

Bravo EU. BRAVO!!!
Lol. Politicians are either clueless or have been influenced by someone with a financial motive.

Like Liz Truss in the UK allowing fracking again - she used to work for Shell.

You get usb-c to 3.5mm headphone socket adapters

Port sizing is near identical.

Also lightning has USB 2.0 transfer speeds at 480 Mbps compared to USB-C capable of up to 10Gbps nearly 21 times faster. Hardly a backwards step.

In addition you can get charging cables probably 75% cheaper from elsewhere rather than one offered from Apple.

Durability wise lightning is probably sturdier but the other benefits outweighs this. Also if you look after your stuff properly it will last a long time. I’ve never broken a single cable in my life. Just take more care with your stuff.

Having both (Lightning on iPhone and USB-C on iPad pro) I have to say, I prefer lightning. Why? The design is simpler / better, less chance of breaking something. With that little part sticking out inside the port, I feel there is always a slight chance of damaging it (like it already happened to me with old USB ports). Unified standard would make sense 5+ years ago. Nowadays the smartphone (and smartphone accessories) market is so saturated already, it just means millions of lightning chargers will gradually become obsolete. but I understand the positives of this change...

I imagine Apple will find a way to ditch the port soon anyway and with it, further improve water resistance of the device.

Apple saying the hell with USB-C they going completely port less and they gonna to tell the EU to suck it. smh apple will win this battle

It’s honestly inexcusable for Apple to have not had USB-C on iPhone Pros since at least ProRAW came out. With the size of the files created using ProRAW and ProRes, I not only hope Apple releases USB-C next year, but also makes it Thunderbolt 4 speeds.
