I take my MBP with me everywhere I go because, well that is what I do. I go places and do work. You could say that I consult with others at there place of work and help them accomplish things. Which means I take my MBP with me, of course before I had my MBP I took my Dell E1505 with me, before that it was a cheap Acer, and before that an iBook G4, and before that an expensive Acer, and before that a 2001 PB G4, and before that a HUGE Dell Desktop Replacement 12lb beast, and before that it was a 2003 PB G4 and before that .....

I've only used mine at the local library once.

First time using it in public and I had someone come up to me and ask me about it.

5 minutes later they told me they'd be heading to the Apple Store that weekend to replace their PC with a Mac ;)

i hate those people that wear the black turtle neck sweaters, tight jeans, and loafers. they pretend to be busy away on their laptop at a coffe shop, but if they had any life or acutaly work to be done, it would not be done at a fricken coffee shop you looser

Uh...yeah. Calm down now, Mr. Crazy Guy. Let me get this straight...you're mad at people because they're using their laptops (which, just in case you didn't realize, are built to be portable) in a coffee shop. Issues...

I carry my laptop with me nearly always, mostly because I'm going to class and need to use it. I suppose you could call that a public setting. I do use it outside of class if I have work to do or something to model in NX5 and I'm on campus, getting something to eat for example. That's the point of getting a laptop, after all -- bringing it with you to do work.

yeah i don't get the whole 'starbucks' thing either, probably because i don't drink coffee anymore just tea, which i have at home... so these coffee shops and people who spend all day in them annoy me......

But i do use my laptop out and about, i have 2 laptops actually one is a work issued HP one and my MBP

I take my MBP with me when i am away from home, i travel about 8 times a year abroad and a bit more around the country/europe, and it's used to mostly entertain and access the net in hotel rooms etc. etc. rather than do work.

As for doing work ...hmmm i can't really see why i would want to do work 'out and about' i don't think i can access huge HP superdome's running Oracle etc from a coffee shop :p

Ok, I do use mine outside (College, Starbucks) and I am as straight as straight can be. But that's not the point. I have a story to share with you guys.

My friend brought his 1 week old Macbook out to the local TGIF when we were out celebrating a friend's birthday and got his stolen while he was busy taking video and stuff.

He was incredibly sad from that because you know - first time Mac user, totally fallen in love with his MB, enjoyed it for a week... and then someone has to come and take it away.

I don't think he would have cried as much if he had a Dell stolen tho' :p

See i don't get why anyone would wanna take one to a restraunt or whatever, and if it was because i was just happen to be carrying it around because of dire need i'd hide it outta sight.

Well, the point would be if you know the consequences of using it in public, and you're ready for the worst to happen, then by all means go ahead. For me, that's the whole idea of getting a portable - so I can do my work outside if the need arises. If you're still studying in college, you wouldn't always get the chance to go back to the comfort (and safety) of your home.

So far Ive just been using it around the house, sitting on the couch, etc.
But next year Im going to be bringing it to university, and probably cafes.

Hell yes I use it in public. It's actually my mom's, but the whole reason for needing it is so I can compose no matter where I am. At home, it's too hard for me to concentrate. It's why I can't wait to get my macbook with Logic, because I can just tell all my time will be spent in public places showing off my mac, and composing. I'm actually pretty extreme with "going out in public." I don't just go out in public; I take everything with me. I'll actually take the laptop, a midi keyboard, and an external out, and just sit in Subway after work for hours, or maybe in the park, and just write music. It's pretty funny, actually, because people just kind of stare at the kid at the booth with the keyboard and the headphones with sheet music in front of him. :D

I can't take mine anywhere until I buy a case for it but I'm kind of broke right now and don't have $40 to spare. lol

Now that I have a MBP, yes I use it in public.

It's a little known fact that the Microsoft OS EULA prohibits using the machine in public, so I'd seldom risk it with my Dells.

Kidding, but it wouldn't totally surprise me.

All the time, I never owned a laptop before my iBook G4, I take it everywhere, and if I'm gone from power for longer than 4 hours, I'll bring my spare battery. Macs have amazing battery lives, I make full use of it.

I've used my MBP once in Panera Bread which has free Wi-Fi. I would do it more but just no need to really. I have a wireless router at home and so do my parents and inlaws. I take it over to their houses all the time. When I start graduate school I'll take it with me every day. Someone at the park was held up at gunpoint and had their laptop stolen. So needless to say, I will avoid taking it there.

Using computer in public

because if you work at home all day (freelance/self employed) it is nice to have a different environment and different stimuli than your home studio where you are alone.

I freelance after hours. On two nights a week, I leave the house and go to a local coffee shop. My three year old always wants me to play at home and I need to get work done on those two nights. My home office is not sufficient insulation from her desire to play candyland....

I use my MBP on campus in between classes in the student lounge. Personally I have seen only a few macbooks (pre-SR), an iBook, and one pre-SR MBP, so the MBP does kind of stand out. My previous laptop was some piece of junk, inexpensive Acer Aspire 3003LCi, that ran windows miserably, but ran Ubuntu slightly better. It's battery life was only an hour though......
