Yeah trail loops right now are pretty crazy. For some reason those in particular are getting backordered for months, so I don't think Apple will even have them for sale at other retailers for a while.
Yeah, the "M/L" size is the worst too.
I think the general consensus is they're sent back to China for destruction. I don't think they all get destroyed though, some slip out and end up on taobao and such.

Yes, I think open-box straps get passed through wholesalers who sell them on Ebay. Dunno where else they'd sell them or get rid of them?
Have you seen actual photos of the band or are they doing the typical trick of advertising with Apple’s stock shots. That seems to be the trend for a lot of knock-off sellers.
That's because they steal Apple's renders. You'll still feel (and I bet see) a difference.
Kinda sorta... though they do have this Black/Black one of the Trail Loop which Apple don't do. Have a look:
Well if you can't find them direct from Apple, people are selling them on eBay for as much as 50% off retail anyway.
Unfortunately the Trail Loops are going for up to $300 (and only the S/M have seemingly been released thus far).
I doubt that'll last. Once Apple gets them out finally, we'll more than likely see the same trend of reselling for $50-$80.
Picking one up today, my store finally has one in stock. I'll post later.
