IMO, if the parent or someone else bought them like a desktop or a laptop, that's cool and i'm all for it, because every kid should have a decent computer. But it gets kinda sick when a kid has an iMac, macbook, all hooked up to a huge screen on the wall or some sort, and has an ipod touch, iphone, old ipod, and so on all in his / her own room. I flipped through the thread a bit and thats some of what i saw. That is what i meant in my first post.
Geez, so many kids here have these elite setups. As long as they bought it all themselves or did something amazing to get it...
I'm 17, don't have a picture because i just reformatted my computer, but my current laptop is a little over 2 years old now. I also work, but instead of spending it all and saved for a while, i get to have an amazing car.
FYI, I do MUCH work in designing + web development. It's gotten to the point where i'm finally seeing some returns. Now, doing work for a single client can pay for my entire setup. I've been saving up for a while now (and eyeing certain items on my desk from the internet for more than a year now). Needless to say, the amount I have in savings is way more than I have spent on my setup. In fact, I started out on a 14'' Dell Inspiron 600M (something that I still use to this day). I've only added 2 GBs of RAM over the years, because it's perfectly fine for graphics work. If i'm moving into some heavy media editing, that's when an MBP will come in handy. But it won't for a while.
Although, I do agree with some of you here. Some VERY young kids getting setups that I used to dream about (and to put icing on the cake, they highlight and bold their age so we can all see how young they are). Around a couple of months ago, I would look at this thread in disgust. But it's whatever, right? They are merely lucky sperm.
So instead of trolling on how our 'age' doesn't match with our 'income', you should take into consideration that not everyone is sitting around all day asking mommy and daddy to write checks and putting down deposits for their desktop toys.
In addition, buying a car is no better than buying desktop items. My monitor, mouse.. they all pay for themselves. To me, they're investments, not bragging rights. On top of buying a car, you'll need to pay for maintenance, tires once treads wear thin, and insurance. In effect, your car will be your owner, and not the other way around. At this rate, I could lease a pretty damn good car myself. But I choose not to go through those liabilities. My laptop is 4 years old. What's your point?
In a respectable sense, I have offered my parents to keep their money they saved up for me for college and put it towards asset expansion. I'm paying for college tuition myself, and i'm just trying to retain my sanity by improving my surroundings.
So for those who make accusations that we are all spoiled kids, we are not. I have hustled like crazy to get where I am today. What have you done?
