Those headphones look pretty cool, what kind are they ?

allison.

My PowerBook.
I have the BT Keyboard and Mouse, but I don't use them that often. My laptop is usually on my lap. I can't STAND sitting at desks and computing for some reason. I break them out when I need to record something and want to be far away from the mic, so I don't get all "click click click" "clothing rustle" "uber wide vibrato" on the recording. (Yea, I'm too cheap to get a REAL mic. The internal one is just fine. I use it for self-checking.)

The book is about Alan Greenspan. the pic of Alan greenspan on my wall says "Chairman of my Heart." We have a lot of fun in Fed Challenge, haha.

My wall is like a giant scrapbook. I'm an interior designer's nightmare.

That little bowl had soy ice cream in it earlier today! IT WAS SO GOOD! Yummm...

I should probably take all that stuff down and make a REAL scrapbook, but EH. I should do a lot of stuff, ya know?

and I've paid for all my Apple stuff by myself. From my 3G iPod to iBook to extra ram, yada yada yada, I've paid for it.
My mom keeps giving me guff because the PowerBook is LEGALLY hers.
Pshaw.

16, and here's my setup.

Dual 2.5Ghz G5 (1GB RAM, 900GB Storage),
17" Studio Display,
30" Sanyo HDTV
Dell 2300MP Projector with 80" Screen
Sony FX1

and on the go...
iBook 12", 1Ghz

And yes, I earned the money and paid for it all myself. Video production pays well :)

Sorry about the poor photo--I'm on vacation and this was the best one I had handy.

hotwire-
man your setup is aswesome! I really want to go into high-end digital photography. (still shots not video) so my question is... how did you start, how did you get known? Is it all from your Website (awesome by the way!) I've made a couple of those myself, just never posted them. Did you take any corses???

While Im talking about Digital Phoography this is my dream setup for it:

1.8-2.0ghz PowerBook Intel
100gb HD
Adobe Photoshop
1gb Of ram
128mbs of video ram

Camera:
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II 16.7MP Digital SLR Camera. Price: well we can dream cant we. $7,999 wow  Maybe something along the lines of the PowerShot S2. Id like at least 5mps Id prefer 8 though.

I'm actually 19 right now, but this is a picture of my setup in May, a few weeks before my birthday. :)

I would definitely recommend a 20d which is just as good for your purposes - it is 8megapixels and five fps - oh it is fast. Or if thats still too much, go for a digital rebel (the 350d)- or check out Nikon's D50. Yeah the mark II is still a whole lot nicer, but until you really become professional, the 20d works fine. You definitely want an SLR for photography - especially sports / action. I would suggest seeing if you could take a black and white film photography course first though, for it really helps to understand the basics of composition and exposure - f/stop and shutter speed and all.
Good luck!

The hardest part of getting started with a video production business is getting your first client, since at that point you usually don't (read: I didn't) have a demo reel to show them.

After I got my first client, (a huge sewer hose manufacturer based here in town--though they ship out all over the world) I was able to cut together a minute long demo of my work and show that off to other clients. A good demo reel is the key to bringing in work.

So far, I'm still working on marketing--because a lot of potential clients are still going to the other company in town. (which has been around for four years and is a bit more well known than I am) I'm working on that one myself right now--so as to how to get known, I don't really have a good answer just yet.

Last thing--I didn't take any courses in video production. Our school's video production program isn't exactly what you'd call advanced, and by the time I started high school I was above the level of the class.

By the way, what do you use for video? Final Cut and Motion? My school has a sick video studio and I'm the lead editor for a children's show that we put on the local channel. But that's just for fun.. and 2 credits. ;)

Yep, I use Production Suite. I'm hoping to upgrade to Final Cut Studio soon.

Just a question for all the video editors here (namely hotwire)...
If you don't mind telling, how do you structure your pricing?
I'm 18 and leaving for college in 2 weeks, and I'm starting a business with my dad and a couple other people...and I just finished our website. (yes I know the site isn't html-friendly. I'm a video editor, not a web designer...)

Nice web site! I like it!

As to the pricing question, it varies from project to project. I usually quote before the project, and stick with it. The reason is that the amount of time necessary for a project is too hard to predict, so charging by the hour doesn't work well for me. If I charge by the hour and give my client a quote (read: guesstimate), it's not uncommon for that quote to be way off, and the client never likes that!

I've heard the industry standard rates for video production are $1000 per finished minute. So, for a five minute industrial video, you'd charge $5000. However, I usually charge about half of that--$500 per finished minute (or so)--so a five minute video runs $2500.

The x amount per finished minute approach isn't written in stone, though. For instance--if somebody needs to hire actors, voiceover talent, etc., that cost is tacked on to the production. Also, advanced 3D animation and motion graphics are often charged by the hour of work.

Hope this helps you out.

Congrats, hotwire! Sounds like you're on the right track for a what... 15 year old? Damn.

Here's my setup:

Dual 2ghz G5
1 TB Internal RAID w/ Sonnet Tempo-X SATA PCI card
2.5Gb RAM
20" Cinema Display (the plastic ones, complete with dead bugs in the feet)
14" NTSC Monitor
Logitech MX-1000
JVC SR-VS30 DV+VHS Deck
Altec Lansing FX6021 Speakers
Panasonic DVX-100a
Nikon D2X

There are a bunch of lenses for both cameras but I'm too lazy to pull them out to get names just yet. My setup has been built up from a barebones dual 2ghz G5 Christmas present to what it is now through video work. Currently I'm editing a ski movie for Anon goggles through H30 Films, which is going to pay off the D2X with a generous margin. I'm 18 as well.

EDIT: I'll post a picture next time i clean my desk.

you're all 18 or under?!?! most of you have nicer computer configurations than most photo editors i know... what are you using these amazing machines for? curing cancer? or just playing games and spending mom and dad's money...

Looking at your setup--very nice! Keep up the good work!

understandable... but seems like it would make much more sense to invest and save, rather than blow $3000+ on some of these ridiculous setups...

I have some money invested and 1/2 of what I earn goes into my savings account for college.

PS- On my setup, It started with the Mini, and then It was just the iBook, I just keep building and building... I figured out that I've spent around $1600 on my setup... but that is over like 12 months. and I save up for 6 months to just get the iBook, so for my setup it took me 18months to complete and thats $88.89 a month.

Heres some more pics of my iBook:
http://homepage.mac.com/wes.parietti/PhotoAlbum1.html

- :)

Here's my setup:

-12" PowerBook G4, 1.33 ghz, 60gb hd, 768 mb ram, combo drive
-Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop (gave it to my dad after I got my PB, but occasionally use it to play The Sims 2 and sync my Pocket PC)
-XM Satellite Radio
-Logitech 5.1 Speakers (don't remember the model#, but they were only $50 at Sam's Club)
-Canon S50 5mp Digital Camera (Great digital camera)
-Nikon F100 35mm Camera, 60mm Nikkor lens, and Nikon Speedlight SB-28 flash (Total cost new=$1500-$2000). No, my parents did not buy this for me. Photography was a big hobby of my grandpa's, and now that his health is failing him and he's in the early stages of dementia, he no longer has any interest in photography. Because of this, he gave his nicest camera to me, as I'm really the only person in the family who is interested in photography.
-Some HP printer (shared with my dad and my brother) that never seems to work right
-Sharp 8" portable dvd player (will be selling soon)
-iPod Photo 30 gb
-Altec Lansing iPod Speakers (the regular inMotion ones)
-iPaq H3800 Pocket PC (Actually a very nice device that almost never crashes)
-Game Boy Advance SP
-Western Digital 80 gb external HD (For backup purposes)
-Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse (To be replaced by a Mighty Mouse as soon as a wireless version is released)
-Apple Pro Mouse (Came with my mom's iMac G4 and she wanted a 2 button mouse, so now I have it)

Except for the Dell and the Nikon camera, all the expensive things I paid for myself, including the PowerBook, Canon Digital Camera, Portable DVD player, Pocket PC, iPod Photo and GBA SP. I just saved my money (including my allowance and birthday/holiday money) and looked for good deals. Many of my electronic devices have been purchased from Sam's Club or Costco, saving me substantial amounts of money.

My parents started a savings account for me when I was born to use exclusively to save money for my college education. I occasionally contribute to that account, and now there's enough money in it for me to complete my 4 years of undergraduate school at an out-of-state private school.

Oh and by the way, I'm 17. And I don't usually use my computer at my desk, I find it much more comfortable to sit on my bed or the couch.

I'm 14 Years old, 15 in September

Haven't got a new comp for a while...

Heres a pic of mine.
My 21" is so big I had to put it in the corner of the room and there is a desk behind the desk that the monitor is on. There is a piece of paper under my mouse because my desk surface is too shiney and it makes the mouse skip

dsc00804.jpg

Oh yea, Motorola house phone and Boston speakers from my old gateway (they sound pretty good though).

I got the Dell for my B-day 6th grade (late 2003), I got the iPod for christams 2003, the camera for my b-day and HP Photosmart for my birthday 2004, and as a late xmas present PowerBook for christams 2004 (I chipped in $600 and bought it in February), I bought the HP Laserjet, the scanner, the mouse, the keyboard, and the USB hub.

Edit: monitor was free. they were giving them away from my dads work. They had a lot of them and they were moving the office and it would cost too much to package and ship them.

i am only 14, and the largest of the things (laptop, printer) were christmas presents, and that was the only thing i got those year(perfectly fine with btw), i know, i know, no mac. I hope after i finish building my gaming pc, i will sell the laptop and get a 12incher.

Setup: Compaq R3340US: AMD 64 3200+, 512mb ram, 80gb hardrive, and yes a real high def (tested myself in quicktime 7, matched my dad's high def tv) 15.4 widescreen, dvdburner
Epson 825 Photo (if it is a picture, Epson owns, we have a total of 5 epsons at both my mom's and dad's house)
camera: Mintolta Z2, with wide angle (payed for meself)
20gb 4th gen (had i waited, it may had been a G3 ibook instead)
apple keyboard, microsoft mouse (they are always fighting)
Creativelabs 5.1's (creative makes nice 5.1's...i guess, i you have the money get the 5300/5500 or klipsch.
Also a 19 inch hand-me-down, no use really, no cable in my room
and my favorite, my 600watt sony 5.1 system, i payed for it, and i have ZERO regrets (i am a junior Audiophile)
i've got in ears from apple too
YAY

I am only 14 and my parents payed for everything in my setup. I know, I'm spoiled. Here it is.

iBook:
1.42Ghz, 14", 512MB, 60GB, SuperDrive
the mid 2005 model
Wireless Internet for the whole house. (Airport Express)

Mac mini:
1.42Ghz, 512MB, 80GB, SuperDrive, BT, APX
17" LCD monitor
speakers with subwoofer
Apple wireless keyboard and mouse
OPTIMUM ONLINE!!! Yea baby!!!

When you add together everything with all of the accessories, my parents spent over $3200 just on my computer setup!!! They must love me!!

EDIT: 4GB Ipod mini, payed for by me ;)

Compaq

Jeffzoom91,

That's a really nice Compaq! What kind of video card does it have in it? I have a HP laptop with a AMD Athlon XP-M 2200+ 1.67GHz processor, so is the Compaq fast?

What's with you spoiled people..... that is one thing that drives me the most craziest..... people not paying for it themselves. I paid for my iBook becuase my parents wouldn't buy a new computer. They still use a G3 400Mhz iMac, that I got tired of so I saved my money and bought an iBook. The set-up's in the thread. I'm 17 by the way.

Also, Ham_Man you definatly have the best set-up..... you really under 18?
pic's coming soon........(but whats the use, I can't beat Ham_Man).....
