Any updates on this issue? Have other users with the Samsung 970 eco plus 2tb versions seen any improvement in their speeds with external thunderbolt 3 enclosures?
May be, though it seems like the problem in this thread has been primarily associated with the 2TB models of the Samsung Evo PlusI have a Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB drive. I bought a WavLink TB3 enclosure and installed 970 Plus into it to use on my M1 MacBook Pro. The best write speed I got is ~1300MB/s, while the read speed is about 2500MB/s. I also tested the enclosure + drive on my ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 and iMac. All the results are similar. I thought it's the enclosure problem so I returned it to Amazon. Now I read this thread and realized it's most likely the 970 Evo Plus' problem.
I have the same Orico 40Gbps with Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB NVMe M2 and I get different write results on my MacBook Pro Intel 16G/500 and my MacBook Pro M1 8GB/500. Anybody an idea why write speed on the Intel is faster than the M1?Exactly same situation, same Orico enclosure and SS 970 evo+ except 500MB; and iMac 2019
Actually, I think it would be faster if you put the Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB in a USB enclosure. Even an Intel 660p 2TB in a Orico enclosure using a JMicron JMS583 can do 1040 MB/s Read/Write on my old Mac Pro 2008 using a GC-TITAN RIDGE for USB. Maybe you'll miss the superior Thunderbolt read performance though.I wish I saw this thread earlier, before I bought a Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB with a Wavlink TB3 enclosure! This combination perform very poorly on my MacBook Air M1, exactly like what the op described, 800MB/s write speed. I could get that kind of performance on USB.
Luckily for me, a friend of mine need a new NVMe, so I am selling mine to him and get a WD SN750 1TB or SanDisk Extreme 1TB.Actually, I think it would be faster if you put the Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB in a USB enclosure. Do you think this is an issue with the enclosures or an underlying Mac OS issue? Seems to primarily affect M1 Macs.I’m afraid I have not seen any updates suggesting a solution for your situation. A new generation of enclosures should be launched soon, however.
Well maybe......but......my startup disk is a 980 EVO Pro (2TB) in an ORICO T3 enclosure. T3ed to 2020 maxed out iMac running OS 10.15.7. write and read speeds 2450 MB/s or thereabouts. So one year later or so, the same problem exists. I have since gotten myself a new M1 Macbook Air (in addition to my 2019 iMac) and can report that the problem exists there as well (albeit less drastic). When connecting my external enclosure (Sonnet Echo Express) with the Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB to the Macbook Air, I get roughly 1200 MB/s write speed instead of the 850 on the iMac. So it's a bit faster, but obviously still massively capped.
No matter how you twist and turn this, with all the different hardware combos people are reporting the same issue with, this must be a macOS (or Mac hardware) limitation/bug.
Sad.
Hi Haddy I'm just about to order the 980 EVO pro 2 TB. I also have the ORICO T3 enclosure. Are your speeds still good. Thanks in advance mate. Yes... still the same. Have 1.64 TB free.Hi Haddy I'm just about to order the 980 EVO pro 2 TB. I also have the ORICO T3 enclosure. Are your speeds still good. Thanks in advance mate. T
Thanks for the quick reply !Yes... still the same. Have 1.64 TB free.
I don't understand that either. Hope someone else can explain that. I would vote for the WD BLACK SN750 myself. The EVO SSDs are known to have issues with the M1 and/or Thunderbolt. 🤔I have an old and newer 1 TB 970 EVO Plus / M1 on Monterey 12.01.
The old writes 850 permanently in Blackmagic and the new 1400, but not over 5 minutes in OWC ENVOI EXPRESS (heat problem > wait). I will try the WD BLACK SN750.
I can not run two OWC SSD's at the same time on the two Thunderbolt on M1 MAC although they are separate controllers ?!
I don't understand this >>> can you explain it to me ?!
