On the financial forums they would say that’s smart! Imagine all the money you’d have made if instead of buying the phone each year you bought Apple stock for 3 out of 4 years with that money. :D
Very true. But for me, for many years it was my biggest passion. It was my gift to myself for my hard work. I was geeked out having the latest and greatest and money was never an issue particularly the early years of subsidizing. You might be surprised how much I would pay for a newest flagship iPhone that didn’t give me headaches. It’s embarrassing how much lol.

There was a poster that said they still do it (excited by new iPhone announcement and buy on launch day) and I responded telling them they are a dying breed, almost extinct.

I agree 100%. At these prices and with the maturity the phones have reached it just doesn’t make sense to upgrade annually unless you have the money spare which in that case, get what you want.

Heh, I would gladly buy every year new flagship, but i am stuck on ip11? pitty they did not jeep regular iphone non oled

Pro tip: Apple usually offers at least 50% of the original value annually for trade-in so it is possible to upgrade and continue paying essentially the same monthly payment in perpetuity.

It would be great if we had some hope for iPhone 14 that the display team is continuing to work on PWM improvements until this is completely fixed and no longer an issue. There’s not necessarily an end point in sight, which makes me less enthusiastic about holding onto iPhone SE.

You are right. I think my mind is stuck in the old days where I had my mom on my plan (elderly and only needed a flip phone) so I always had an annual subsidized upgrade to use. I’d sell that prior year phone that I paid $299 for, for $600 because someone without an upgrade and not wanting to pay the full outright price would pay this. Instead of a steady payment always happening, I was getting paid in a sense to get the newest iPhone. All moot now because of my eyes. I bought my 14 year old the regular 13. She has zero issues. I won’t know anyone personally, outside of the forums, impacted either.

I've had several folks tell me they get headaches when using Apple products for too long, but not with Windows/Android. But they just use them a little less.

Maybe when they switch to miniled - mega premium price:)

I remember that time. The good old days of eBay and carrier subsidies.

I’m skeptical that they’ll switch display technologies anytime soon, although I do think the next jump will be PWM-free or extremely high like 12,200Hz.

OLED is just about technically perfect besides the PWM and burn-in concerns, the latter of which hasn’t been an issue in practice.

Im not sure i suffer from pwm but then again i may do

I dont feel sick

But if i rememeber i have some
Focus issues like after looking at the screen

I did have dry eyes but i even have that with iphone 11 i think at times

So what things can i know i have pwm i know the straining is defo pwm

Oled is better for eyes. LCD makes them more dry. The problem with oled is nausea/vertigo/dizzines/head pain.

Can we say in terms of on paper the iphone 13 is better due to having higher refresh rate? 610? As opposed to 480 of the iphone 13 pro

Also the modulations are stronger on iphone 13 pro so better to
Go with iphone 13

Hypothetically yes. However I found over time iPhone 13 wasn’t significantly better than the rest of the lineup. Amplitudes should also be lower on the non-Pro models.

I’m still experimenting with Reduce White Point and leaving auto-brightness off, to no real avail although the display looks amazing at 50% brightness with Reduce White Point set to 50%. I can only imagine how much nicer the display would look without any flickering.

In theory - but there are other factors. So as I and others have said before, you have to try them to know.

Just thought I'd re-share how I noticed the issue with PWM and a quick way for me to test it.
Basically it's just a matter of readability, focusing my eyes on the letters. With OLED phones the letters will quickly start moving. With LCD iPhones the letters appear steady as a rock. I realize that it sounds like hoodoo, but it works for me.

Interestingly, the iPhone 13 was worse than 12 and 13 Pro for me, even if it supposedly has higher rate of flicker, I can't explain that.

I can’t believe how people stand the yellow piss effect on white backgrounds of oled iPhones. These days i was testing iPhone 13 next to 11 and oled was better mostly on deep blacks. Colors have not that much more pop on oled and text and in general the display seems more sharp on 11.

lines were more or less stuck in place
That’s just a camera shutter (240fps) synchronization with the refresh rate of the OLED PWM. Sometimes it syncs perfectly so you see static lines.
Shooting a slow mo video of an OLED iPhone will show the PWM, but it’s not an indicator whether it’ll thrash your nervous system or not.

The iPhone 13 lineup seems more balanced in my experience. It’s a purer bright white. Compared to the 2022 iPhone SE the panel is warmer and skewing more yellow on iPhone SE, which I would usually prefer.

Thankfully, Apple’s color calibration is strikingly similar across all modern devices. The third-generation iPhone SE is probably better yet than iPhone 11. Videos and pictures look incredible and can be ridiculously sharp, like opening a 4K video in the 720p area of a Mac or iPad display. Where iPhone SE falls apart is the text and interface sharpness, although there’s only so much they can do for rendering on the display. 326ppi is still nonetheless higher than an iPad or Mac, but I suppose those displays would be further away at typical viewing distance.

At this point I would probably swallow my pride and accept an iPhone SE in an iPhone 11 body, but I’m not sure I would do the same in 2-3 years when that does inevitably happen.

I agree. They have improved since iPhone 12 and they are more bright. But just open a safari webpage with iPhone 13 side by side to iPhone 11 and honestly tell me which one you prefer to read. On OLED the experience is dull and like piss/sand. I also agree that on YouTube videos for example or when browsing your photos OLED is more rich and punchy.
