Please Apple if you are reading this help us. Make a option for people who want to use differnent frequency and reduce display quality. It’s almost causing me to go dizzy. I am about to give up on the iPhone X. Have spent close to $100 in screen protectors, changed the settings many times, nothing helps. This needs to get on the news so it catches apples attention.

As I said in my previous post, I switched to another device and I do not have any more issues now. Since users are talking about PWM and OLED, I will say that my new phone is a Samsung Note 8. This thing has also an OLED, and it does not cause the same effects as the Iphone X. I really hate not being able to have IOS but there is something wrong with the X and I will not risk my eyes over it.

If you look at the video reviews of the iPhone X, you can see the face id laser flashing in the videos when it turns on. I am wondering if it is too strong and it is causing the issue. Nevertheless, I am not going to assume is the screen or else. My empirical evidence says that when I used another device with OLED screen I did not have the same issue.

I switched to a note 8 and I am not having the issue. You should probably try the note 8 instead of going by assumptions.

For what it is worth: I switched back to the iPhone because I could not get used to the Samsung. I got a new iPhone X and I am not experiencing the same symptoms. No issues during the day. At night if I pick up the phone with no other lights on, I do get some discomfort still. This happens mostly when the Face ID comes does the read.

I am still under the idea that this is due to the IR of the Face ID. Nevertheless, the pointis that I am having a different experience with the second phone. I could not look at the first phone for more than 15 minutes.

I will put some black tape over the Face ID and report back

Apple told me I’d receive daily updates on this matter but haven’t heard from them since then. Not really sure what’s going on...

So I used the front facing camera from another phone (since the rear facing doesn’t pick up IR, has IR filter) and noticed it is sending IR out every time the screen is on regardless if Face ID is in use or disabled. I fully reset and turn off all Face ID functions and it is still sending out IR regardless what app or function of the phone you are in. If this isn’t what is causing me problems it might be others, I will report back in a few days if I still have eye problems.

That’s the proximity sensor! It always flashed since the first iPhones, in fact my new iP8 Plus does the same!

I've 100% gotten used to this issue since my launch unit I returned. Went back to the X and i've been using it a month.

A painful adjustment but it's gone for me

Interesting, would you mind sharing some more info?

-How bad were the initial symptoms?

-What brightness level and settings (Night Shift, True Tone, etc) did you use?

-How are your symptoms now? Any sign of eye strain?

I had basically debilitating headaches, lower brightness at night.

When I got the X again, I keep it at 50% volume (Just set the brightness and autobrightness will learn it)

No eye strain and no headaches after a month of use. I usually did keep brightness at 20-30% prior

So it's always at 50 procent nog matter if it's dark or sunshine outside?

Does anyone know if anti glare or privacy screen protector help with reducing the eye strain and headaches? My eyes are sensitive to it as well, causing headaches

Spent close to $80 on every single one I could find. Although the blacked out privacy one helped a little it was almost impossible to view the phones screen during the day.

I tried matte, anti blue light that was tinted yellow, anti blue light that was tinted blue, anti blue light that was tinted purple, and most others just simply seemed clear but claimed anti blue. I even bought the $30 one from amazon claiming to be superior.

Hey guys I made a post on reddit to raise awareness of the issue https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/7na4ro/apple_help_us_dont_let_down_your_pwm_sensible/ some feedback/support would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Thanks for raising awareness about the X and PWM. Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to get a fix. I haven't heard from the manager I've been in touch with, and it seems like they haven't been talking with MICHAELSD either.

Also, I don't think an official statement from Apple is necessary. 90-ish % of people are completely fine, it's just us that have the issue. As for the returns, you'll absolutely be able to walk in and return it if it's a health issue.

Finally, I wouldn't ever expect the lower level apple staff to know what we're talking about. I actually talked with a manager at my local store in the mall, and he didn't even know that the new iPhone had a different kind of screen. So yeah, we're kinda on our own for this one lol

Thanks I tried my best and failed miserably, I personally don't care that much as I'll go a get the 8 but I wouldn't let it go because if the low PWN is the trend in the future for Apple products most of us won't be able to use them anymore...or even look at our friends phones!

Apple has added many accessibility features, including night mode that lowers the quality of the screen when on. I could imagine they can add a feature to change the frequency of the screen for individuals sensitive to this PWM issue as a option in the accessibility menu.

If android hackers had the ability to change the PWM in rooted phones I do not see why Apple who has full access to their own platform could not.

I understand some say it is hardware limitations but if you read this thread you will find a link that it was done on Androids with success for people who had problems viewing the screen.

I am way out of my return period for the X, and I still have my 7, so I am taking a one week break from the X and try the X again.

Has anyone gotten used to it and no symptoms? And what settings adjustments did anyone make that help with the strain and headaches?

I always have mine set to 50% brightness and have True Tone off. It's gotten a little better, but I still get some eye strain if I use it for too long, I'm not sure if it'll ever go away completely.

Also, I talked to the higher-up at Apple I've been in contact with regarding PWM again today, as far as she knows, there's no fix coming. She did also say that this PWM issue will most likely be assigned to an engineer to see if they can address it for the future, but I'm not holding my breath.

Honestly, at this point, I'd suggest that anyone that still has issues with the display should just return it and move to an 8+ or something.

Let's hope that rumor of the 6.1'' iPhone with the X form factor and LCD display for next year is true :p

I've noticed my X flickering while scrolling or when not looking directly at it just as I do with LED lights in cars, fluorescent or LED lighting etc.
I was curious why I had to pop an Advil after using my iPhone extensively today. Now I know.
It's still a great phone but this just further reinforces my negative feelings towards OLED screens altogether.

Anyone ever heard of Iris? It's a program in the same vein of flux, Night Shift etc, and it apparently reduces PWM issues by altering the white point in a way that does not involve PWM.

https://iristech.co/how-iris-reduces-pwm-flicker-medium/

Anyone out there have a PWM moniter they'd be willing to test it on? If this actually does work, maybe it'd be worth bringing to Apple's attention

Also, I dunno about you guys, but my experience with the X has gotten a lot better recently. For example, I used my phone heavily today and didn't have any issues whatsoever. I'm assuming that if I didn't have any strain, it's okay to keep using it, so we'll see. Anyone else having an easier time with it now?
