Picked up an iPhone air last night. Set it up and had it restore over night. Using it now for the first time. I can tell this is the Samsung display immediately. No off access green tint.
My eyes do feel different, but nothing bad yet. Will see how it feels over the day.
This could potentially be better than the 17PM I used. It didn’t get model of the particular screen I had… but it did have the off access green tint

So anyone here could use the 17 pro max ?
Still trying out the 17 pro. The screen is good, but not great like the 16e. However, the cameras on the pro are just great. I will spend a little more time to see if I can deal with a screen that is not perfect.

17 Air - Day 1.
Can’t tell if I’m having eye strain or if I’m just looking for it. Just feel weird. Definitely different than 17 Pro Max..

I keep turning the setting on in Accessibility to disable PWM on my Air, but it seems every reboot turns the serting back off. Is it just my phone doing this?

Have you been able to settle back into normal usage habits to see if that mitigate symptoms to an acceptable state? That is a personal challenge for me because I am so busy also doing all the typical new phone things "setting up, testing everything, trying it all out, comparing features and cameras, etc" in addition to testing my pwm parameters, etc that once I actually slow back down to how I typically use my phone, I have found the only residual symptoms I have left are using the phone the last 15 minutes in bed in the dark. That I happily deal with.

That is exactly the methodology I am following. I’m gonna give it a couple more days to evaluate, but yes, I’m trying to not be in continuous testing mode :)

QDEL - The future looks bright...
but its still a long way off. Hold on to an iPhone you've got that works for you now, cuz we've got some waiting to do. But at least there's some hope.

"AI Overview:

QDEL (Quantum Dot Electroluminescent) is an emerging display technology that is inherently flicker-free, unlike some current-generation OLED screens. A QDEL screen for smartphones is still under development, but prototypes have been demonstrated.

How QDEL eliminates flickering:
Many displays, including most OLEDs, control brightness by using a method called Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM), where the screen is rapidly switched on and off. While an effective dimming technique, the pulsing can be perceived as flickering by some users and can lead to eye strain.
In contrast, QDEL is a self-emissive technology that controls brightness by adjusting the voltage or current applied to the quantum dots.

Direct light emission:
QDEL applies an electric current directly to quantum dots, causing them to emit their own light.

Stable brightness control:
Instead of rapidly flashing the screen (PWM), QDEL adjusts the steady electrical current to change the brightness, much like a traditional incandescent light bulb. This direct-current (DC) dimming approach prevents the visible flickering caused by PWM.

Status of QDEL smartphone screens:
While the technology shows great promise, a QDEL smartphone is not yet available for consumers. Major manufacturers like Samsung, Sharp, and BOE are actively developing the technology for various devices, including smartphones, but it is not yet commercialized."

Even though I had a bad experience in the Apple store I didnt cancel my 17 pro and it arrived yesterday.

Got mt partner to set it up turning on PWM switch, turning on low power mode and full brightness.

Played for 15 mins and it felt ok, until I stood up. Felt like I had just got off a spinning fairground ride.

Then the headache began, sigh.

It goes back and I start the 1 year timer once more.

Did you try 60hz and reduce motion?
Full brightness is too bright for anyone.

Day 10 with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Still no complaints.
My iPhone 16 Plus has been sold and shipped today. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is my new daily driver.
Thank you Apple, for finally doing something to make PWM bearable for me. I'm so incredibly happy and relieved.
I certainly don't need to tell anyone what an incredibly good piece of technology the iPhone 17 Pro Max is.

PwmMen, I‘m so happy for you! I just signed up to Macrumors to ask you this question, you said before that the 16 plus has been working for you too, but that you wanted to upgrade for the better cameras. Was the 16 plus just okayish for you pwm wise, or was it as good/as tolerable as the 17 pro max? Which of the two were better for your eyes? I‘m trying to decide between the 16 plus and the 17 pro or pro max, but I will probably have to try them out :)

Thanks in advance!

@Ninnie7
The iPhone 16 Plus was fine, compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, I'd say 85%.
I was fine with it, but after extended use, I started to experience some minor discomfort.
With the iPhone 17 Pro Max, I have no complaints even after 3-4 hours of screen time. It's perfect!
It feels just as comfortable as my previous LCD iPhones. I simply love my iPhone 17 Pro Max. 🥰

Thank you so much for the answer! That sounds so good! I have ordered a 17 pro max to test out, but it will only arrive mid October, will post my results here 👍🏻
