Has anyone ever “gotten over” their eye strain from this phone? I’m a 2/10 in terms of discomfort. If I can eventually get used to it, that’s good to know. If I will always have this lingering uncomfortable feeling, the phone has to go back. I already had to return my first max because the charging port didn’t recognize the cable half the time, and I had a hardware issue where True Tone was not available in settings.

The PWM in the X bothered me and I ended up going with the 8 Plus last year. This year I upgraded to the XS Max and so far the PWM is not bothering me at all.

I did get one of the slightly yellow warm screens on this Max and maybe that makes a difference? So far it’s perfect and I do like the warmer display color compared to the blinding blue/white cool screen.

True tone on?

Could it be the Face ID scan which is causing the eyestrain ?
Someone tested this ?
It’s not Face ID 99%.

Well, I’ve already wiped my XS, boxed it up, and moved service back to my old iPhone 7.

I’m so disappointed as I really liked the phone a lot. Now I have to wait another month and see if the XR is for me or not.

It looks like the infrared dots from FaceID are in question, in general.
"One thing is clear: the risks are definitely there. Infrared is known to cause retinal and corneal damage, especially when IR-A is used, which is the closest to visible light. Though there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that Face ID can cause any of these issues, there is also no evidence to show that it cannot cause them."

"In a research study conducted a couple of years ago, it was found that the average person checks there smartphone no less than 85 times per day! That’s 85 times a day that you’ll potentially be exposed to infrared radiation from iPhone X’s Dot Projector, the component that hits your face with the 30,000 points of infrared light whenever Face ID is working."

This may be of interest.

Fact is people who uses galaxys and notes dont have this problem myself including.
The thing that really confuses me is that Apple knows this and yet does it again with the xs series

Cause its not just a few people it are quite a lot of people who are affected by it
So you are not seeing it on the Note OLED screen? So is the issue with apple? Iphone X was my first OLED display phone so i assume it was the OLED and not Apple.

Yes this could become an issue after sometime.
You can turn off awareness and open your phone with your eyes closed.
But I understand that this is not secure at all.

Well it seems the 8 Plus is still the safest choice ;)

This is definitely a real issue. I never get headaches. I've had an iPhone since the very first one came out. On Friday I noticed that I had an odd headache in the evening. I didn't think much of it. On Saturday evening it happened again. I again just thought it was nothing. Then on Sunday I got another headache in the evening. That's when I noticed it was a trend and that something was causing them. I thought of what could possibly be causing the headaches. I noticed they started exactly when I got the iPhone Xs Max, so I did a google search and here I am.

For those of you that got headaches with the iPhone X, did they go away after time. I like my new iPhone, but I cannot put up with daily headaches. If they continue, I'm going to need to return it.

BTW, headaches for me are extremely rare.

It seems like if you're sensitive to PWM, you won't truly get used to it to the point of no headaches. I tried using the X for 6 months, and always had a low level of strain no matter what.

Just got back from T-Mobile. I returned my Max and got a product red 8+ for me and a free one for my daughter (opened a line for her)

REALLY loved the Max, but the headaches aren’t worth it to me. I wish I hadn’t sold my other 8+, but product red is amazing. I’ll have to wait for the new oled tech from apple. None of my other amoled phones affected me at all, so it’s 100% something to do with how apple implements it in my opinion.

Check it out using another phone slow motion video pointing at the max. It’s insane.

As someone else mentioned before. Please use http://www.apple.com/feedback I cannot stress this enough. It’ll help make Apple aware of the issue.

The more people that report this, the more chances of engineers getting the ball rolling on a solution.

I used to work for Apple and know first hand they DO read the feedback that is given.
The amount of us affected is minuscule. I think the only solution is new oled tech. I hope it comes out before my 8+ is obsolete lol.

I've been using my Max since Friday. I have very sensitive eyes and I've never had a phone with an OLED screen before. I read this thread before buying the phone but hoped that I wouldn't be affected. Since Saturday, I've been noticing that my eyes feel strained. I'm assuming that it's my new phone. I have not experiences any headaches yet. I don't want to just assume that this phone won't work for me but I also don't want to beat a dead horse and keep it if it's hurting my eyes. If it's just my eyes straining, how long would it take for that to go away? If it's going to. I don't want to let it get past my return time.

This might’ve already been mentioned but does Apple mention PWM on their website anywhere? Was it confirmed other than through user tests?

I’m just wondering whether any other Apple displays use it even LCDs since that Motorola with the ridiculous name has it.

It first came on the x last year. No lcd phones have it.

Mine got worse. I returned it today. I still have a headache from it.

For those who have had to return for this issue, I hope that you're mentioning it so it can be documented why the device is being returned so Apple can hopefully fix this with future iPhones. That said, I doubt there are many people who are affected by PWM so it may have little to no impact on what Apple will do in future iPhones.

They wont change anything to help a tiny minority. The "fix" may negatively affect more people. We need new oled tech that doesnr require pwm.
