Just an update: Day 3 of having the notch covered, and no headache no nothing.

People have been calling it "placebo" and "tin-foil", but if you suffer from eye-strain, I suggest you try it and judge for yourself.
What are you covering it with? And why? Aren’t the settings sufficient to turn off the flood illuminator and the dot projector?

I do think I’m doing better without True Tone on. But I haven’t been on my phone a whole lot today to be sure.

With black electrical tape. No, for some reason they still fire when I try to unlock the phone even if everything is disabled.

I can make a video to see if you want.

I have had the notch covered since day 1 just to test how I tolerate the display without Face ID being a factor. It has gone well so far. I'm going to uncover the notch tomorrow and se if anything changes.

I’ll take your word for it. I stuck a sticker on the display protector over my flood illuminator. That’s the one I don’t need. I can use my passcode at night.

I’m leaving the dot projector alone for now. I want to see if the dot projector is doing anything to contribute to the gritty feel in my eyes.

At least so far, I’m not having the pwm type discomfort I had before in addition to eye strain type discomfort. I really do like this display. It looks good.

If I’m still feeling the grit then I will cover the dot projector, too, and see how that goes. If it all totally disappears, then I will know to cover the whole notch.

I’m fine with using a passcode if that is what it comes down to. If I ever become a nefarious criminal at least the police won’t be able to open my phone by putting it up to my face. Mwahaha. :)

I do wonder if my iCarez full screen display protector is causing any issues. My other phones had Supershieldz brand display protectors. I wanted a full screen display protector but only iCarez has the kind I like to use. My husband does not use display protectors. Hmmm.

I went through exactly this exercise with my X the past year. Turned out to be the FaceID for me. Good luck!

I just took off the iCarez protector. Unfortunately I didn’t have another full screen one (I thought I did but the other brand has a cutout for the notch) so I put that one on. I do like the clarity of the glass but I’ll need a full screen one ASAP. The sticker will have to wait another day.

Wait wut? People are having eye strain with the XR now?
Yeah, this is all very concerning, since people are saying it could be due to Face ID.

My XR is great, but I turned off “Attention Aware Features” just to be safe. I don’t mind Face ID doing a quick scan when I unlock...but the constant scanning for the Attention Aware Feature could be causing other people issues?

To confirm, with the settings I’ve attached in the picture, it’s only scanning my eyes when unlocking, after the phone is unlocked the scanning stops, right?

I tried an Xs Max for the last week. I had a low grade headache all week. I NEVER get headaches. I had to take off work yesterday I felt so bad. Stopped using it yesterday and returned it to Apple today. Back to my 8 Plus. I feel wonderful today.

It’s a pity you returned it. I would love to hear if covering the notch with a black tape would help you.

If you live in SFBay area, I would love to let you borrow one of my phones to try it if you are for it.

Sad thing is that apple wont abandon face id anytime soon...
Well if turning it off would be sufficient I would do that and just use my passcode. But apparently we have to tape over it. WTH?

However, I’m not completely sure yet that I have a problem with it. I’ve had the phone for only a couple of days. And I’ve only just turned off Attention awareness yesterday. It took almost a full week for the issues with pwm on my Max to become unmistakable.

At least I’m not racing against a return deadline this time. I’m not returning this phone. I’ll just block the Face ID pieces with tape if I determine that’s the problem. If it’s the display I will fall back to using my 8 Plus for most things and use the Xr more as a phone and camera instead of all around media device.

I love the phone itself. I love the size. I love the features. I got nice call quality on it so far.

I do like my new display protector a bit better for clarity. However it doesn’t cover enough of the display so I’m going to try another brand of full screen protector.

I would be surprised if Face ID can cause a headache. Unless we are talking one of those nasty eye socket pains which is exactly what iris scanning from a Samsung did to me.

PWM is a real problem and definitely a nasty surprise migraine inducer. I have a Google Pixel 2 with OLED. I love that little phone but I can’t look at that display for very long. The pwm on that phone knocks me on my butt after awhile. It hurt my forum friend Aneres eyes, too, and that was part of the reason he gave his Pixel 2 up. He also had other issues with it but that was one of them.

So it’s tricky figuring out if it’s one of them or both of them that’s making some of us sick or sore and fatigued.

It sucks because I feel like I’m not going to be able to enjoy Apple products going forward. I returned my XS right before the deadline (Have the 6s) and was hoping for good news in regards to the XR, but I don’t even think it’s worth the risk. Even without the PWM, I don’t feel like taking the risk with Face-ID. I don’t feel like spending the money and having to tape the top of my phone. I’m gonna end up just going with the 8 at this point unfortunately.

I’m in Los Angeles. I would really like to know if it’s PWM or Face ID.

Don’t let this thread scare you. The people who get affected are a very small percentage. Get the XR. Try it for two weeks and if it’s causing any problems just return it and get 8.

XR is an amazing phone.

Hi. Just FYI, I just did the test again and when I have FaceId off the “flood illuminator” doesn’t seem to trigger. Certainty level around 90%.

I do see a flash that looks brighter than the proximity sensor but not as bright as the flood illuminator every now and then, but it may be my crappy IR camera. Sorry, I don’t have the best equipment.

I should clarify. I didn’t mean the thread would cause me not to enjoy the products, but more the shift towards Face-ID/OLED screens.

I am just saying that if you don't have any symptoms, there is no reason to not enjoy the better? OLED screen and the cool features that come with the FaceID.

It is not about symptoms for me. Actually I have no problem with pwm, but I dont think pwm is healthy, even if it is not painful for me. Flicker is bad - watching flickering image, even if you do not register it can not help your health (eyes, brain), that is why I have flicker free oled TV and before that I had flicker free lcd tv. And face id? Yes I know theoretically it should be harmless, yet there are people that feel pain because of face id. So, i will probably buy 8/8 plus and keep it several years. And thats pitty, cause I would really njoy better camera in Xr.

Yes, same here, and for MacBook Pros as well since they started using the butterfly keyboards which have no key travel to speak of.

Since I have no way to measure the power of the flood illuminator's LED, I took a second video of the iPhone camera's flash. You can see the video below.

In what was captured by my camera the intensity of the flash looks equivalent to that of the flood illuminator's.

From a quick google search I have seen estimates for the iPhones flash to be around 40-50lumens which is about 0.4 Watt for LED if I am not mistaken.

Even if we assume that the flood illuminator is half the power of that, this would be 0.2 Watt. Way above the safety limits of 1mW.

Can someone tell me what assumption above is wrong? Or if my calculations are wrong?

Your assumption has to be wrong unless you are willing to believe that, first, Apple would refuse to adhere to safety standards and that, second, they would receive certification for such devices. You could argue that the standards aren’t sufficient, but I think it stretches credulity to suggest that Apple turned out millions of devices that flout established safety standards and got certification to do so.

I can't believe an IR above safety limits is accepted all around the world. Every new device is tested and accepted for things like SAR rating, Bluetooth, etc.

Millions and millions of devices with Face id which are all above safety limits??

I just can't believe that

I understand your investigation but the watt numbers are just a wild guess.

I know. But I am in a rabbit hole, and I have to *know*. And not having the exact technical details of the devices involved makes it difficult.

VW sold thousands and thousands of cars with emissions above the limits. Why were they different?

Edit: thousands, not millions.

Edit2: I am just trying to investigate and understand. I am not saying that what I mention above is right. More like brainstorming.

It's a matter of belief vs knowledge.

Do you see any obvious errors in my assumptions and calculations above? I am genuinely asking.

Thera are many errors.
Using an IR camera and measure the watts on its brightness??

Come on that's not how it works.
I also want to know more about face id.
But not with this kind of investigation.

It's not telling us anything
