Thera are many errors.
Using an IR camera and measure the watts on its brightness??

Come on that's not how it works.
I also want to know more about face id.
But not with this kind of investigation.

It's not telling us anything

Not to measure but to estimate using a known value(that of the actual flash).

Again, just in case you didn’t see my edit above, I am brainstorming.

Yeah, this is all very concerning, since people are saying it could be due to Face ID.

My XR is great, but I turned off “Attention Aware Features” just to be safe. I don’t mind Face ID doing a quick scan when I unlock...but the constant scanning for the Attention Aware Feature could be causing other people issues?

To confirm, with the settings I’ve attached in the picture, it’s only scanning my eyes when unlocking, after the phone is unlocked the scanning stops, right?

In my last testing session the flood light didn’t come on once unlocked. I’ll test some more later

I cant help my self but think that avoiding to publish specifications smells like Apple is not sure if they are within real medical safety limits, like “lets hide them, just in case”...

God, this is getting crazy.

I don't know what to think anymore.

I do not think Face ID is the culprit (at least in my case), but i don't exclude it might cause some trouble to me, especially after a long week working in front of a pc. Online you can find been pretty extensive discussion that debunk most of the points made here regarding Face ID.

My XR is definitely better than my old XS Max, but i still experience some discomfort (possible cause: i also got an apple watch on the same day) and i do feel some pressure on the sinus when using Face id (possible cause: it may be placebo.)

I believe that not enough sleep and long periods working at a pc may make me more sensible to these things and i have come to the conclusion that i should probably quit my job

I had the PWM problem with my Max as well and I bought the Apple Watch 4 at the same time. When I started noticing the headaches/eye strain, I stopped using my Max and went back to my 8+. Even using my 8+, I was still having eye strain that I think was caused by the watch. It might have eventually went away, I was playing with it a lot. I'd never had a smart watch and I was loving it however, I went ahead and returned it with my Max. I didn't want to take a chance that it was the watch too and be out $500 because I couldn't use it. I think it's a YMMV thing though and I've never seen anyone talking about their watch hurting their eyes. It could just be me.

I agree with you that my XR is definitely better than my Max, but my eyes do still feel tired and a little strained after using it. I'm hoping that it's an adjustment period and it'll go away. We'll see!

Now don’t go and quit your job over this. If you had these symptoms after purchasing these devices, then I don’t think your job is the culprit. At the end of the day these are just electronic devices that enhance our lives and aren’t a necessity. Health and stability is more important. What good is it to have an Apple Watch and iPhone while sitting on a street corner!

My XR also feels better than the X/XS Max.
But I still have more eye strain than with my 8 Plus.
Also compared it side by side with an old 7 today and even though the resolution of the XR and the 7 are the same, text seems sharper (slightly blacker) on the 7.
Same goes for the 8 Plus, but that's to be expected as the ppi is also higher.

It's just as if it's slightly harder to focus on the screen of the XR, which may cause some eye strain. Nowhere near as bad as the Oleds with pwm though.

Should have put an /s :)

Yeah i perfectly agree. My reasoning is that in the evening i had a light eye strain even with my 8 plus. So probably I wouldn't have any problem with iphones and apple watch if i were not working all day in front of a screen.

I have a watch on order. I really hope it won't cause any issues for me. This is concerning to read though

I certainly hope that I don't scare you off from the watch because I haven't seen anyone else mention this problem. It was probably just me. I was obsessing over playing with it and it's pretty small to have your eyes focused on that for a long time. I would be interested to hear how it goes for you though! I actually loved the watch but didn't want to take the chance on it.

Just to chime in, I have the watch 4 for a week or so now, and have no problem at all. But as with everything, try and judge for yourself.

I don’t think watch tho it’s oled uses pwm?

Could be wrong but

Even if it hypothetically did you’re not staring at your watch all the time like your phone

But I’m not sure it has flicker ?

No you didn't. I'm going to try it out and see. I'll probably be fine given the small amount of light emitted from the mostly dark display. I'm going to use mostly black watch faces like the analog infograph in black. And I won't look at it that much anyways and when I do it'll be for short moments. I'd be happy to report how it goes, if I remember. Estimated delivery in 3-4 weeks.

I don't expect any issues though

Correct. I don't see any flickering:

I just did the same, and there is a lot of flickering. I think in your video the flickering of the room illumination covered the effect of the watch.

It seems like it is less accentuated at high brightness but it is definitely always there.

I purchased my X on launch day last year. I experienced weird headaches and eyestrain for the past year on and off. Some days were worse than others, and some days it didn't bother me at all. Never put 2 and 2 together thinking that it was the screen of the X causing the eye strain. Fast forward, I upgraded to the XS Max and the headaches got worse. It wasn't until I purchased my wife's XR that I noticed I wasn't having eye strain or headaches while setting it up and using it throughout the day. As soon as I went back to my Max, bam, headache. Guess I am one of the ones who suffer from PWM frequencies. My dual Dell 27" Gsync monitors on my desktop tend to give me headaches at times to, especially on white backgrounds. One thing I noticed a lot of was while using the both the X and the XS Max, text would be fine for a while, then be blurry the next along with the headaches.

Needless to say, I returned the XS Max Tuesday and picked up a XR and have been much happier since. Don't even miss the higher screen res.

Ok for what it's worth, here are my findings:
Got headaches from iPhone X last year. Switched to my old 7. Headache went away. Returned to X. Headaches returned. Returned X.
Had an Apple Watch with OLED screen since Watch 0. No headaches ever.
Bought XR on Friday. I use it with Face ID but I have the attention aware feature and the needing to look at the screen option turned off (because of sunglasses), and I'm absolutely fine. No headaches, not even a little bit. No eyestrain either.
YMMV. Be safe out there.

I am now getting on fine with my XR using Face ID (with attention-aware/require attention off). No problems.

Would you be willing to re-enable the attention aware features at some point and report if the headaches come back?

The intensity of the flood illuminator is so high that it even penetrates a single layer of black tape!

Again my friend these images don't say nothing about the intensity.

Have you seen the rumor about next year's face id??

We believe that Apple will raise the output power of the flood illuminator VCSEL to lower the impacts from invisible lights of environment in order to improve the Face ID user experience. The higher power VCSEL with higher ASP needs increased requirements of design and production, increased materials for array design, and longer testing times. Therefore, the VCSEL supply chain can add higher value.

Yeah, another user posted this as well. I hope that by increasing the intensity it will cause symptoms to more people, and at least give us the option to disabled completely with software, so we don't end up with the ugly tape that is covering the proximity sensor as well.
