Gotta say i'm impressed with Face ID2 on my Xs Max. I have been a big critic of FID coming from iPhone 8 Plus to the X. Loved TouchID on all my previous iPhones.. FID never worked when I put sunglasses and a hat on.
But much to my surprise FID on the Xs Max is faster and works with my sunglasses and hat on outdoors.

It’s hard getting used to not having a home button I guess it’s out of habit but I love how it’s easier to identify and hides everything till I decide to look at the phone itself and it magically unlocks. I love the accessibility and ease it took to get setup and how it was a very easy transition. Just now debating which cases to use. But worried that it’ll hinder the Face ID

I don’t really think this is Face ID 2. I think it’s simply the same tech as last years X and they only touted it as faster is because the XS has a faster processor. They would have hyped it up more if they had advanced the tech.

iOS 12 made a noticeable difference on my original X.

On the X it worked well for me at first and then just...stopped. Right now Face ID is working well even when I’m lying in bed. I just hope it keeps on rocking!

Face ID still has issues with being in dark. I can’t get it to unlock for me. It’s a pain.

It’s not generation 2 Face ID.

We all scarred from generation 1 Touch ID with iPhone 5S/iPhone 6. The Touch ID 2 in the 6S-8 iPhones were perfect

Works great in the dark for me too.

Not! FaceID does not need ambient lighting to work. Works entirely via it “dot projector”. Mine works just the same in a pitch dark closer, yours should too!

I can’t get it to work with me grabbing for the phone on the night stand in dark. Maybe it’s the angle I’m laying down. I have to be sitting up for it to work. And when I’m sitting up I can turn to most angles and it will still work. But not when I’m sideways and facing the phone.

Not the same tech.

iOS 12 refers to new Face ID on Xs and iPad Pro as codename Yonkers while the old version was Pearl.

Likely if sideways your face could be distorted. Also make sure to hold your device away from your face, not too close.

It’s the angle. Your head needs to be oriented straight up like you look at it when you hold it normally. Unfortunately it doesn’t allow for reading faces at an angle, something they are supposed to be changing with the new iPads but I would be willing to bet that will be an iPad only feature, at least for a while.

Apple called it “Advanced Face ID” in their keynote, since technically it is the same camera/sensor setup, but the big gains come in the form of not just the A12 but the neural engine (which is what Face ID uses to turn your face into a mathematical number reading) which is a **** ton faster than the A11’s. Plus iOS 12 software optimizations result in a much faster scan.

I think it’s IOS 12 that made the difference. My X Face ID became lightning fast after the IOS12 update. Not much difference between an IOS12 X and XS.

It's the hardware.

Below is iOS 12 on both X and Xs Max.

Someone else mentioned, it’s not necessarily ‘Face ID 2’. As Apple didn’t claim that, but it certainly appears to be improved with the speed with unlocking. What I would like to see with Face ID 2 in the future, is having more angles to help unlock when laying down or in various other positions, ect.

Looks like someone got over the notch.....Thought I noticed a drop in rage coming from the 'Alt to IOS' threads.

Speed was one area Face ID needed tweaking. Now Apple needs to work on detection angle improvement & more often re-scan post-fails.

I'm not sure what you're getting at......or maybe your reading comprehension needs work? Didn't mention the notch at all. As I mentioned....I was not a fan of FID....but FID2 is better and faster. Still prefer TouchID to be honest though......

I am with you OP, but this isn't Face ID 2, and that may confuse people. It is just Face ID improved and faster. Guessing Face ID 2 will be next year.
