The hardware isn't the same. Even Apple refers to Face ID 2.0 on the XS using a different codename in iOS 12.

I'm curious about this to, I compared a module from the X to one from iFixit and it had an identical part number: JGXA7 on the cable going to the dot projector while XS modules have 8QMIR.

I've seen hit or miss improvements on speed overall and I think any physical hardware improvements may just be in the projector for maybe a different pattern/output to improve coverage/penetration in certain situations.

I base my hit or miss comments on personal experience so far and this video for everyone to judge:

At 1:15 the X barely beats out the XS. It's all subjective even with videos but I still think Apple did very little improvement on the Face ID hardware if at all and as they said focused on the algorithm and additional processing from the A12

I think bolded it spot on.... The new algorithm and A12 chip combine to make Face ID 2 better than last year for me any way.
The difference in performance between the X and Xs Max has been big for me. The X fails every time I put a hat and sunglasses on. No matter how many times I would have it rescan my face. Both phones have IOS 12 as well.
The Xs Max was perfect from the first scan forward. I took it hiking over the weekend where we were outdoors and I had a hat and sunglasses on. It quickly got it right every time

Then I think my hypothesis may actually be correct, they may have indeed modified the dot projector hardware. Haven't had too much obstruction time with the XS but the X hasn't been bothered too much by it though I'll see how the XS behaves over time.

I think it may simply be what apple said, better algorithms and a faster chip with machine learning. It might be that now the chip can recognize your face while only getting 50% of the information where as before it needed 70%? (Not real percentages, just using those as examples.)

Again - doesn't work in bed for me. Must type in passcode each time. I'm so OVER this forced security with Apple. Why is there no ability to turn this off. I don't need all this security when I'm in my home. Else, let me get into my phone without 'typing'.

Am I missing something or doing something wrong here? I have a friend with Android phone where if the phone doesn't recognize her, she just draws a big "L" on her screen. Sounds nice.

You can turn FaceID off and change how long until you need to enter your pass code again, I think the max is 4 hours, unless I misinterpreted. I do agree though I love the Android Smart Unlock, I really hope Apple "invents" this in iOS 13. It's so useful in the car or at home, it lets you have your device unlocked when you're connected to specified things after verifying with pass code the initial time it connects. You can do it based on geographical location too I think but I haven't used it that way yet.

Was very critic to FID but now that i have the Max i'm really impressed. Hard to go back now.
Works very fast and its more accurate then touchid which did not work many times thanks to head and sweat etc,

It doesn’t make a lot of difference since it’s throwing IR at you and that IR is reflecting back to the phone.

Apple wouldn’t release a racist feature that’s for sure.

I don’t believe that. Many big tech companies (ahem Microsoft, Google and Facebook) don’t bother testing facial recognition on darker people and have significantly higher error rates as well. This is well documented so I don’t have a lot of trust in anyone.

It worked very well on the X for me. The only time it didn’t work was when I was lying down in bed on my side. After iOS 12 it started working even at angles in bed lying down. With the max it’s just a lot faster.

It’s well documented that Apple did do research into making it work with darker skin tones. They are one of the only companies that did do this.
