Everyone knows FaceID is inferior to TouchID for lots of scenarios and more convenient in a few. But it's a general trend of the iPhone experience that the hardware may be getting more powerful, but the experience definitely is getting worse every year.

Under glass Touch ID will be back in 2019. Most likely as a complementary choice as in Android phones.
Loving my 8+.

OK I am lost. Are we talking about a fanny pack here? I by no means wear skinny jeans, but when my phone is in my pocket, the only thing my eyes see are the closed fabric at the top of the pocket. Sure as hell am not seeing a screen.

Like someone said earlier he has clear pants. Or has X-ray vision.

lol, I guess. Either that, or OP has enormous pockets. Big enough such that he can hold them open and see/operate the phone inside. So, like, maybe grocery bag-sized pockets.

I'm really trying very hard to imagine this use case, and I'm failing miserably.

FaceID works perfectly fine for me in sunlight.

Not so much for me, it fails once or twice before unlocking and has to be much closer than normal. Otherwise, it's a great improvement over TouchID.

We’ve all failed except for the OP.

What does it mean to operate a phone in a pocket? Unlock? But unlock is not operate
If you like to operate your phone in your pocket Face ID slows things down compared to the last IPhone 8. Texts don’t show in ios12 either unless you open the phone.

Quite easy as it’s touch screen everything like Facebook easily clickable
Seems like you'll need to clarify that in the context of using the device in your pocket (and thus not being able to see or know what's on the screen).

I have an iPhone X with face-id and an iPad with touch-id. I'd never get another device with Touch-id (if I could). I'm sure there are situations for some people for whom face-id doesn't work for them. For me Face-id hasn't worked maybe 4 times total since I got the X - touch ID requires multiple attempts every time I use it. I have redone touch several times and this is before winter with gloves I'd have to take off or other issues with fingers and skin in winter.

I don't think you'll see Touch-id on phones or new models of iPads again as you won't see 3.5" headphone jacks.

Phones have shown the texts on screen since like phones began.
And there have been issues arising from visible texts since cell phones became popular. Embarrassment, privacy invasion, mild and severe, it’s all occurred.

I love that messages are no longer visible to whoever glances at my phone.

This thread is so confusing. Why is this being addressed now? Face ID has been available for over a year and no one has ever made anything about an argument being an issue if the phone is in your pocket. It’s a non-issue.

I had the same objections, got a XS after I handed my 7 to family. You get used to face ID in days and the hiding of notifications details until you look at it is quite good for privacy. You almost won't miss touch ID, my only complaint so far is the angle it picks you up at having it laying on the table.

I always carry my iPhone X in my pocket and I don't see an issue. I guess I can kind of see if you are pulling the phone out of your pocket and rest your finger on the TouchID while pulling it out and having it on the home screen already before you look at it. Texts are hidden, but as soon as i look at the screen, FaceID recognizes me and shows me the content. It kind of seems to me like the phone just knows when I need it to be unlocked and just does it. However, I HATE that FaceID doesn't work in sunlight. That's the only time i ever really wish there was TouchID as a backup option.

Face ID works fine for me in sunlight just doesn’t work at all when I’m waking up in the middle of the night and my room is pitch dark.

LOL. I do it every day Tiger. No different than Touch ID today other than the illuminater. The illuminater is under the glass and illuminates from under the chosen digit. ;)

So when I used to unlock in my pocket on my 5S, 6 Plus, and 6S Plus, I would put my thumb on the home button.
It was very easy to feel the home button in my pocket, it was a depressed circle with a metal ring.

How do you plan to find the part of the screen which has a reader, in your pocket?

This thread is funny as a teacher. Students are always trying to sneak in a text during times they shouldn't be using their phones. I guess face Id makes that a more difficult thing to do like the OP states..touch Id would be a lot easier to do something like that with..

Yes I can look into my pocket and see the screen useful at work or busy places don’t want to flash an expensive phone around

You must use pants with some really wide pockets wow. It's unfortunate Apple didn't plan for this functionality before developing the new phones. I'm shocked that convenience for people who peek at their phones in their pants pockets didn't come up in one of the development meetings. The 2 or 3 of you who do this in the world are getting totally shafted.
