Yea I hate FAIL ID as well. And I am not gonna get use to it. I’ve had my X since November of last year. Wish they would’ve added Touch ID to the X. I will most likely be looking at the galaxy s10 When it comes out.

If I use my phone in my pocket?! Now i've heard it all!
Face ID works great. It doesn't cover all scenarios so I do still wish I had touch ID on the front. I'm sure in the next year or two they will have displays that work with that.

Face ID works fine for me in sunlight just doesn’t work at all when I’m waking up in the middle of the night and my room is pitch dark.

That's not an issue for me, it works in bed in any way that i'm laying (usually on my side). I just have an issue with sunlight and I'm not really sure why. I just upgraded to the XS Max yesterday and still the same thing, so i know it wasn't just my hardware. Maybe it's just my face. Lol

When in the car, the phone is mounted to my console area and facing me. At night and in the morning, it has no problem unlocking when I tap it. When it's really bright outside, it doesn't work. I have to bring it closer to my face and it still fails one more time before it finally unlocks. Maybe it's just outside of the allowed operating distance from my face. It's just weird that it works other times at the same distance but not when sun is in my face.

Everyone knows FaceID is inferior to TouchID for lots of scenarios and more convenient in a few. But it's a general trend of the iPhone experience that the hardware may be getting more powerful, but the experience definitely is getting worse every year.
Not "everyone knows". FaceID is FAR superior to TouchID in my experience and opinion, no way I'd ever elect to go back.

So I was having the same issues with my X last year, and I eventually figured out my issue.

Whenever the room was dark, it was either because I was sleeping or taking a nap or something like that. In those cases, I’d have my glasses off. When I woke up and grabbed my phone without glasses on, I was holding the phone closer to my face than normal, and that was causing the issue.

Not sure if it’s the same for you (do you wear glasses?), but after I figured that out that Face ID has worked flawlessly for me, even when wearing hats or while I’m brushing my teeth and have a toothbrush in my mouth.

I DO wear glasses. This could very well have been the reason.

Incidentally, last evening I thought of restoring the device and setting up as new to see if it is just a software glitch and to see if this will also reduce the storage usage by the “other” section. While setting up the device I chose to scan my face without glasses on and at night when I tried it Face ID worked better.

Sorry, OP, your phone isn’t designed to be used while it’s in your pocket! (Never thought I’d have to say that).

Just take the darn thing out and actually look at it!

Other phones will (and already do, for that matter) but sadly I doubt that any iPhone will ever feature TouchID again just like they won’t have a headphone jack again. Once Apple decides a feature is old news that’s it for them.

Pro tip, Put a face in your pocket. Before you even ask, yes face id works in the dark.

I’m still trying to figure out how massive the OP’s pockets must be for him to be able to see and navigate the display while it’s in there.
