My point is not letting strangers with apple pay, but rather the fact we're seeing those reports in the first place. The idea of stating it would be a bigger news story and since its not, so its not really an issue is a mistaken logical leap.

I understand for the vast majority of iPhone X owners, the security of FaceID is sufficient, but that doesn't negate how I feel touchid is a more secure solution
Agreed security by obscurity is never a secure solution. The science behind it is very different though, and no secure solution to in the US FIPS standard or UK CESG approved standards will include finger prints.

They said it would learn, but it just learns to not recognise me. It gets worse over time and it doesn’t frigging work in landscape mode.... wtf? How did that slip by?

I don’t mind the feature, but please put a finger print sensor on the power button like Sony...
Why should it work in landscape? Pointless feature when on the home screen

I edited my initial comment, but yea, The landscape feature will be preferable on the PLUS models this year, and may be irrelevant on the X. Even though the display is technically larger than the current PLUS models.

So define “larger”. It’s taller but skinner. The total square area is less than the total square area of the current Plus models.
I’m not knocking the X, I own one. I’ve had an7 Plus also since July and am selling that phone.

I bought the iPhone X at launch and initially I was impressed by it, but now I spend 80 percent of my time putting my code in. The problem is it never gets me the first time, then you have to go back and try again, or sometimes for whatever reason it sometimes tries instantly, but it’s so inconsistent.

It’s as if it has to be a perfect distance and angle from your face. If you try with it on a table, it cannot cope with the angle, despite the trailer for the phone showing it doing that. Also if you’re in bed you tend to have your phone a bit closer, it cannot cope with that either...

I’ve ended up hating my iPhone X because Face ID is just so bad. You end up having to hold your phone unnaturally, like you’re taking a selfie or something. On top of that it doesn’t work in portrait, so if you have your phone on a horizontal wireless Charing stand like me, you have to pick up your phone to unlock. My god the gestures that replace the home button do not work in portrait either, it’s so clunky.

One other point, IOS 11 has the worst auto correct ever. So many times in this post it’s corrected things so poorly, most the time it’s corrected words that were already correct.

Apple really should have made the power button into the Touch ID sensor like Sony do. I’m starting to wish they put a headphone jack in too, for whatever reason Bluetooth headphones love to disconnect and connect a lot on iPhone X when nothing is playing.
Hi, I’ve had the iPhone X for about 2 months now and the FaceID doesn’t really give me any issues. It works fine except for sometime when I’m out working out in the cold and I have my face covered. Before I got it many people told me that it doesn’t work in the night or it gives issues with sunglasses but all that was false until I actually tried it. I would say try to re-set up the Face ID.

But in fairness the aspect ratio is different and that doesn't work as well for some people. On the other hand, the 2:1ish aspect ratio seems to be where the industry is going. :)

I agree. I don't really miss landscape mode on my X as I do not feel as though the display is larger then the plus models. When I upgrade this year to the OLED plus models, I do hope landscape mode returns. And hopefully FID can scan in landscape then as well.

I suppose the issue is that the IR illumination is fixed hardware, and landscape FID would require a second set of illuminators? Dunno...imagine the hate people would pour on a second notch!

See -- this is the problem with some Apple fanatics here. Trying to dictate how people should use their phone...

Face ID should absolutely work in landscape mode.

I agree. And if Face ID is incorporated into the iPad in the future, then it's almost necessary for it to be used in landscape and portrait because of how the iPad is used in different orientations all the time. For Example, using landscape for safari auto fill passwords or Apple Store purchases/application purchases. It would just be completely inconvenient if Face ID only worked in portrait mode on the iPad.

Right. I may be an exception, but I literally don't remember ever using my iPads in portrait mode.

It’s honestly a piece of ****! It fails on me 60% during the day and when I’m laying in bed it doesn’t work at all. I love the phone but hate Face ID to the core of my bones. Apple needs to figure out a way to make Touch ID work beneat the screen so Face ID can be cancelled.

I had the opposite experience. FaceID is way more reliable than Touch ID. For me Face ID works 98% of the time where Touch ID worked maybe 60%.

FaceID is far from being crap. It's a new technology that is at least as fast and reliable as the first gen of TouchID.
I also have a high degree of failures. However, when it works, it really is awesome. Especially when authenticating within apps, which for me seems to be more reliable then the initial unlock .

They may have to figure out a way to offer both, because FaceID has been more reliable than TouchID for me. I agree that it doesn't work well while lying in bed with half your face buried in the pillow, but to be fair it needs to see your whole face. It works find if I pick my head up off the pillow a few inches, or if I'm lying on my back. During the day FaceID is more reliable for me than TouchID ever has been. TouchID has never worked well for my left thumb, no matter how many times I re-scan it. The right thumb works almost every time, unless it's wet with water or sweat... or unless it has a glove on of course. Meanwhile FaceID is working well whether I have my glasses on or off, hat on or off, shaven or unshaven, and in the dark or in the sun.

I'm not sure if Apple will ever return to TouchID, but it seems like it would not be difficult for them to include both TouchID and FaceID. I guess it will depend on the feedback they get. From what I've read on sites like this, and heard from others who own the X, FaceID works well for most people and some (like me) even prefer it to TouchID. I go back and forth between my iPhone X and my iPad Pro (which has TouchID), and I'm already looking forward to an iPad with no home button and FaceID.

On the other hand there are clearly some who are not having a good experience with FaceID. If it fails to work for you 60% of the time during the day, I hope you have contacted Apple or stopped by an Apple Store because that isn't normal. There could be a hardware problem with your device. Whatever you do, don't keep starting over by re-scanning your face for the first time. FaceID learns your different looks over time, so if it doesn't recognize you today with your sunglasses on, keep entering your passcode a few times and then it will start to recognize your sunglasses. Starting over from scratch wipes out that information.

Apple's history doesn't provide much hope that they will stay with TouchID as an option. But it's probably too early to say. Logically, it's possible that there will be at least one more TouchID phone next year, the iPhone 9. But when you think about all the tech that Apple has jettisoned over the years (examples - 3.5mm headphone jacks on iPhones, USB ports on the MacBook) and all the howling that resulted, I wouldn't guess that Apple will keep TouchID more than a year or so, other than via sales of prior year models (as they're doing now by selling the 6S and 7).

I like faceID it just seems a bit clunky in it's current state compared to touchID. I think they will knock it out of the park next year with FaceID. TouchID 1 to 2 jump was huge.

I like that summary (because it agrees with what I found when I had an X for five weeks). Amazing tech, UX needs some work. And I'm sure Apple can, and will, improve the user experience over the next 12-24 months, just as they did with TouchID. So, Tim, call me back when you've got this thing tweaked, willya? ;)

I look forward to seeing what improvements Apple makes with Face ID for fall 2018. I don't think the speed of Face ID will necessarily be adjusted as much as how the sensors will be improved upon reading your face based on different positions and so forth.
