I’ve read in a couple different places that Face ID can’t work in landscape mode. I checked it with phone...and sue enough it won’t work in landscape. Do you think that’s a reason why Apple didn’t announce the new iPad yet? If this is the case then I’m afraid that’s going to be a deal beaker for me at least.

Can you imagine how day to day with that would be? Portrait mode to unlock your phone...landscape mode like usual then open a site that needs a password...hit 1Password and then rotate to portrait mode to unlock the app and tap to fill the password in....you get the picture.

Very clunky...so if the only way to use Face ID is in portrait mode then we’re all going to be basically forced to use the new iPads in portrait. Ugh.

Can't see it happening. There's many (myself included) who have their iPads permanently connected to a keyboard. If the only way to use FaceID was in portrait mode it would mean continuously picking up the iPad and attached keyboard and rotating both.
Never going to happen.

IMO if FaceID is coming to the iPad it’s going to be improved to eliminate the need for device rotation and minimize the inconvenience of picking up the tablet to unlock it.

And no . . This issue has nothing to do with not announcing the iPads this month . . . Releasing the iPhones and having them get their press without taking thunder away from the iPads has more to do with it than anything else IMO.

Like I said...if Apple can’t get it to work in landscape (hence the reason no announcement yet) and the only way is using the thing is in portrait mode then it’s definitely going to be a deal breaker for a lot of people. Myself included. Now, if they force it so that Face ID only works in landscape mode...then that would be acceptable I would imagine for the majority of people out there. But if the smart connector is indeed going to be by the lightning connector (as rumored) then it kind of supports the idea that Apple is going to want us to use it in portrait mode. And the reason could be because of Face ID if that is where the connector is actually going to be located.

No it’s just speculation at the moment. But I can verify it won’t work with my phone.

Apple released the last iPad Pro with the a10 when they had the a11 in their phones.

If they don’t include the a12 in the new iPad I will lose my shiet hard!

Is there confirmation that FaceID 2 can’t do landscape?

I'm sure they would have announced it. It would be hardware and software change.
Was hoping as I have they same concern with my IPP.

Was reading the hands on from the Verge. They said landscape Face ID did not work on the new phones

More than likely the reason you do not get faceID working in landscape mode on a phone is because they do not orientate, whereas iPads do.
The X and XS does not and although the XS Max does with certain Apps it does not orientate either on Home Screens.

No they didn’t. iPad Pro with a10x (June 2017) was released before iPhones with a11.

But you can't tell me they weren't sitting on the A11 at that stage.

Oh man, I was just checking some of the rumour sites out, they are all pointing towards an A11X.

Please don't be true....

I’m not so sure that’s the reason. For instance, on my older phones Touch ID would work from any angle or orientation, as does my iPad right now. In fact, when you set up Touch ID it tells you to rotate and change the orientation multiple times during the process. If I remember correctly from when I set up Face ID on my phone last year, it’s just the one position with moving your face in a circle but staying in the same overall orientation. I’m wondering if it’s some weird hardware limitation with the true depth camera. Now, I’m hoping that it’s strictly a software issue and can be or has been fixed already...but the are rumors to the contrary out there. I sure hope they are wrong.

I still don’t get why so many are angry about this possibility and that they think it’s so difficult. To me EVEN IF it only unlocked in portrait... it’s a simple matter of lifting of a 1-pound device for 3 seconds. lol ;)

*or just don’t use it on your iPads since they wake up with smart covers.

You can’t see why this would be an inconvenience and clunky way of having to use an iPad? Scroll up to the second post for a great example...imagine having to disconnect from a keyboard each and every time or like that post describes trying to lift the keyboard and iPad to rotate to portrait every time. Yeah, that isn’t going to happen.

Either Apple has to make it work in landscape or they are going to force everyone to use the thing in portrait mode. One or the other is going to happen. If rumors and leaks are accurate then it very well could be portrait mode only (ie smart connector location) and that’s going to be very unfortunate.

TouchID is totally different to FaceID. TouchID doesn't use any gyro sensors whereas FaceID does. As such if the device does not support orientation at the Home Screen/Lock Screen it's not going to support FaceID in Landscape.

Apple won’t put Face ID on the iPad if it doesn’t work in landscape

If the clues found in iOS 12 (images of the iPad with no home button etc) are true then the new iPads are going to have Face ID. No Touch ID anymore has to mean Face ID only. No way Apple is going to release new iOS hardware where the only way to unlock the device is by going back to having to type in a code to unlock.

Or, trace oily fingerprints and etch out a design!

There is no such thing as FaceID 2... yet.

A11 is a beast.
A12 is a mere Apple asvertised 15% faster in whatever choice synthetic benchmarks they picked. Its meh.
They spent more time on going 7nm than increasing performance.

And it makes some since, if those 7nm factories dont have enough volume.

A11X will still be monster.

Could be infrared dot projector, if its arangement isnt perfectly square (refrangular or other, I might have even read has a pseudo random patter ), depth map would be distorted when rotated 90degrees.
The paeudo random dot matrix array that made all dot projectors slightly different would insure data from one dot projector could not be spliced to another iPhone and use its dot projector.

And this very well could be the hardware limitation, if there is one.

I have a feeling that if Face ID can only work in portrait mode and Apple tries to force us all into using the new iPads in portrait mode then I don’t think the next generation iPad sales will fare too well. I could see a big run on the current generation iPads as everyone tries to get one before they are all sold out. I, for one, would likely be one of those people. In fact, I’m still trying to decide whether to just get a current model or go for the one that is hopefully going to be announced next month.

They wont force portrait. Itll be both orientation or no FaceID. I suspect a tradeoff based on manufacturing and logistics...

IPhoneXS got old FaceID, but new 7nm SOC.

IPad gets new FaceID with dot projector that can do both orientations, but A11 made in old factories.

Has there been any analysis on why FaceID does not work in portrait? I'm not quite sure why the orientation matters.
