Looks like the x and y coordinates of the face map are firmly set, and cannot be swapped (most likely due to sensor limitation).

I do not know why, and I do not know if this is a reason at all. Just an educated guess...

These are my thoughts as well.

Probably Apple didn’t want to make at the event the iphones faceid looks dated compared to the ipads ecause of both orientations
So an October event for ipads and mac is the way to go

And this very well could be the hardware limitation, if there is one.

I have a feeling that if Face ID can only work in portrait mode and Apple tries to force us all into using the new iPads in portrait mode then I don’t think the next generation iPad sales will fare too well. I could see a big run on the current generation iPads as everyone tries to get one before they are all sold out. I, for one, would likely be one of those people. In fact, I’m still trying to decide whether to just get a current model or go for the one that is hopefully going to be announced next month.

It is a hardware limitation. The matrix is designed and expects portrait alignment.
This was covered in more detail in another thread.

Just put a in the code if landscape. Much faster than picking up and rotating the iPad.

I still don’t get why so many are angry about this possibility and that they think it’s so difficult. To me EVEN IF it only unlocked in portrait... it’s a simple matter of lifting of a 1-pound device for 3 seconds. lol ;)

*or just don’t use it on your iPads since they wake up with smart covers.
I'm guessing you don't use 1Password or saved passwords in safari. Some websites require 2 touch ID unlocks to get the info filled in. Whenever I am going through and paying bills/budgeting on the iPad I'll end up doing 8-10 touch ID authentications - that would be super annoying to have to remove it from the keyboard and hold it up then put it back.

The only thing that would maybe save it is if they combined portrait face ID with apple watch unlock - if you unlock the iPad with your face then the watch being in range will auth the rest of the requests. But still, I'd rather just have Face ID that works in all orientations.

This and more. Taking handwritten notes in long meetings and having to pick up the device off of the table to unlock it periodically would be distracting to everyone in the meeting. Not everyone has full control over how their device security settings behave, for me my company institutes strict screen timeout and lock settings that I cannot change simply because I have corporate email account setup on it.

My guess is the new iPad pros will be announced shortly after Sept 25 when the back to school deal is over.

I do not think that FaceID has nothing to do with it.

People all ASSUMED they were going to deliver with the new iPhones, Apple never said when.

I suggest they will be later this year, maybe October or November but for sure early enough for Christmas!

One has to wonder if Apple is now wishing they had done the iPad announcement last week with the watch and phones. Especially with the lackluster sales being reported so far. Either that, or they were banking on the XR being the most popular and are counting on those sales next month. Doesn't help the third quarter sales though. Should make for a strong 4th quarter, which is always expected with the holidays coming up.

I don't see them releasing a new iPad w/ Face ID if they can't get Face ID working in landscape. It would be a bad experience. I use mine in my ASK all day at work.

same here my IPP 10.5 during the work week sits at landscape all day long..and it would suck to turn it jut to use it. if that happens no new ipad for me

I’ve read in a couple different places that Face ID can’t work in landscape mode. I checked it with phone...and sue enough it won’t work in landscape. Do you think that’s a reason why Apple didn’t announce the new iPad yet? If this is the case then I’m afraid that’s going to be a deal beaker for me at least.

Can you imagine how day to day with that would be? Portrait mode to unlock your phone...landscape mode like usual then open a site that needs a password...hit 1Password and then rotate to portrait mode to unlock the app and tap to fill the password in....you get the picture.

Very clunky...so if the only way to use Face ID is in portrait mode then we’re all going to be basically forced to use the new iPads in portrait. Ugh.

I actually think it’s because of the new price points.

iPhone in September, iPads and MacBooks October/November.

I feel like I'm missing something on this FaceID thing. Surely they could just add a second set of the sensors that enable FaceID and embed them in the "top" long-edge face bezel. Think where the webcam on laptops usually resides. Since the current smart connector side is considered the "bottom" anyway, consider the other side the "top". Then just toggle which set of sensors is enabled based upon current orientation. I realize that the rumors suggest that the smart connector is moving, but I am as yet unconvinced of that one.

That's a good point. With no notch, they could do this. Obviously it adds to costs, but it would likely be a last resort if they can't get it working.

those places have no real idea of Face ID would work in Landscape or not. but lets assume that they are right. that is merely a reason to skip that feature. either flat out tell folks that they can only use Face ID in portrait or leave face id off all together.

releasing now versus later is unrelated to this issue. it's more likely that they didn't want to add even more Skus to be juggled at once for their store staff.

they might not even need that. Face ID works by recording a facial analysis and saving it. then comparing the scan from an attempted unlock with the saved one. who's to say they couldn't write software that rotates the saved copy to match the orientation of the iPad and then do the comparison. perhaps they didn't do it for the phone because in their minds it's not a big deal to hold it portrait to unlock just like not being able to limit screen time on an iOS device etc wasn't a big deal for years

What if the dual face registration of Face ID 2 allowed both a Portrait scan & Landscape scan? Would that be a way we could utilise biometric authentication on the new iPad?

That's a good theory, but which side do they put this second True Depth Camera on. For my situation it would need to be on the left, long edge as I have a case & can only set the iPad on its stand with the right edge toward the bottom. The stand also has a 'lip' which would cover the True Depth Camera if it were along that bottom edge.

Is it fair to say that by having it on the left, long edge would not only benefit myself, but everyone (those with or without a case)? Or would there be others it would disadvantage?

I can't recall which edge the Smart Connecter is rumoured to being moved to, but for it to line up with my situation, it would need to be along the long, right edge.

The current rumored location of the smart connector is on the bottom by the lightning port, which is why I’m suggesting that Apple might be wanting us to use the new iPads in portrait mode only. I hope I’m wrong of course.

Has there ever been a landscape in a plus sized iPhone? I know this has been discussed in this thread to a certain degree, but I just can’t remember.
