...or worse

Crazy.

Guess majority of Android's market share comes largely from the cheap/low-end market. That and/or people are simply refusing to upgrade despite the wealth of options available.

EDIT: Here's the original Facebook post.

most people that use flagship android devices know not to install the android facebook app ;)

I avoid facebook most of the time, but when I do log on it's through the browser. the android app has had a bad reputation for ages.

I don't see why this is surprising......

Android has an 83% marketshare of the more than 1 billion smartphones out there in existence.

Samsung sells the most popular flagship Android models (by a pretty wide margin) and they barely top 75 million sold in a year.

A large majority of Android devices in use are low end Chinese devices. And while OEMs are creating more powerful devices for less money, they haven't made it into wide circulation yet. Still hundreds of millions of legacy Android devices in the wild.

Also, I want to point out these words in the headline "...Android phones it sees..." which would mean they aren't claiming that 66% of ALL Android devices are older. People here are reading that into the headline and story themselves.

Just goes to prove that Android is more future proof than iOS and has a longer life. While iPhone 4 is pretty much a door stop an Android phone from the same era is still useful and the screen size is equivalent to the new iPhone 6. Speaking of which a 2012 Galaxy Note II has 2GB DRAM and will continue to be useful long after the 2014 1GB DRAM iPhone 6 and 6+ are obsolete.

Agreed. Why bother buying a new phone with Lollipop when Gingerbread was a fine OS.

Or as I like to call him, Dirk Digler. Everything that guy writes is sheer editorial Propoganda. I've seen that guy flat out lie in articles. He has zero credibility outside those Apple fanatics on AI forums. Some of those guys are way, way out there... Worse than crackberry fanatics.

I think you should work in PR. You sound like the perfect candidate.

Not your sarcasm for one thing. Yes i linked to an Appleinsider article (Cos thats where i initially saw the story). But the numbers are quoted from Facebook itself. Or are you shocked! Facebook posted those numbers too

Agreed. Why bother buying a new phone with Lollipop when Gingerbread was a fine OS.

Why bother upgrading from an HTC G1 or Nokia 3210.

You know what I find crazy, someone trying to stir up a internet forum war with a terrible source meant to cheer lead their favorite megacorporation.

No wait, I think I am the one that is crazy for thinking this. People do that all the time. It is essentially the norm on the interbutts.

Think of the more productive things you could do, you are better than this OP.

Guess majority of Android's market share comes largely from the cheap/low-end market.

Did someone ever think otherwise?

For one....if you want to be credible here in the Alternative section don't posts new threads trying make Android look bad by quoting of all places Apple Insider. They do not live in reality over there. Moderators will lie and delete posts that prove them wrong. It has been documented...one of them lost admin status because of it. We took screen shots of posts....only to see them disappear later. Then they would deny it ever existed.....except we had screenshots to prove them wrong. You want lean on AI for your information....so be it. It's your credibility........

To you low end is anything cheaper than iphone. If you take specs to specs comparison these China made phones have as good a specs as iphone but at 1/3 price.

I don't consider them low end at all. It just that iphone is way way overpriced. I bet Samsung is having problem is because of these China brands.

Well the iPhone is consider "low end" since it is selling at China phone prices but with contract. I doubt very few people would pay full price for iPhone.

Weirdly ultra-defensive

Did i hurt your beloved or something?

I don't even recall saying Android was terrible or anything of the sort. And i can't exactly post an article about Android in the iPhone sub-forum. But i suppose quoting Appleinsider might've made it come across that way. In which case fair enough.

I just found the stat interesting given Android's marketshare and rapid iteration of products is all. As for Appleinsider...you may not like the site and thats fine but...they didn't make up the story. Here's the Facebook blog post. If that makes you feel better.

I know you'd like to think of me as a troll and by all means knock yourself out. But at the end of the day i consider myself tech agnostic. Don't really have an allegiance to any platform. I'll sing their praises and criticise them accordingly. But thats wasn't even the point of my original post.

Credibility on a tech forum is largely a myth. Even more so in a specific sub-forum. People come here to discuss their interests, likes/dislikes of products, companies, services etc based on personal biases.

Lead by example and give your 12 year old a $700 phone!

There are plenty of places were cheap phones dominate, IN, ID, PH. Or probably all countries below the top 10 rich countries.

first off the AI article is crap and did not bother doing any real research on the facebook blog post.
I read the facebook blog post. Saying that 66% of the android phones it sees WORLD WIDE. are lower end does not surprise me. Most of the world is pretty poor and lot of older devices out there.

So after you look at the source you can see they are talking about world wide and you develope for. Now if it was the US only that might be a different story but clearly they are talking about world wide.

As for raw numbers in the US I would expect most of the phones are 1-2 year old range.

This also shows something about android. Old devices are still usable today. This compared to Apple that after 2 years you have a brick. Heck old phones still work pretty well on Android.

Wow.

As long as they aren't all stuck on Gingerbread or before. That experience would get much worse. Of course, Jelly Bean still rules and KitKat is growing too.

Actually, I wouldn't mind having the same specs and dimensions of an iPhone 4. That was one of my TOP 5 fav phones ever. It did so many things so well with a beautiful screen and long battery life. If an Android OEM can come up with similar specs to iPhone 4 but with KitKat and for under $120, I wouldn't mind getting it. The prob is most 3.5 inch displays don't have a resolution that comes close to iPhone 4. The cam and battery life is usually awful too. GPU is also quite weak. The only worthy compact Androids come from the Sony Xperia Z Compact series.

The iPhone 4/4s were some of the BEST iPhones and smartphones ever. I still see many people use them. You couldn't really fault them in too many areas except maybe for the iPhone 4's GPU with simple games like Subway Surfers starting to lag and the cam is nowhere close to the current iPhones. But iPhone 4 specs is as good on having a BASIC phone doing BASIC tasks as most cheaper Androids out there. If you are not into gaming or a shutterbug, iPhone 4 is still a great BASIC smartphone to use.

Nope, but thanks for telling me what I think.

Low-end nowadays would be iPhone 4ish like the article refers to.

I still use my 4s but trust me when I tell you, you do NOT want to go back to a 3.5 inch screen. It's absolute murder.

Wow this thread is embarrassing on so many levels.

1. the reliability of the source material
2. the over reaction of posters here (over defensive and over aggressive)
3. the flaming
4. the nit picking and in-fighting.
5. the automatic 'judgment' over the motive of the OP or assumptions they are dreaded 'haters' when the opening post has no implication of such.

Seriously people - sometimes you have to let things go ....

Is it realistic that the majority of Android handsets used on Facebook are low end ? Yes it is. Right so let's end it there rather carry on acting like we have the IQ of a deranged monkey by squabbling and attacking the OP and either let this thread die or start acting like grown ups.
