Can someone give tips on optimal setup for faceid? It's extremely frustrating how often faceid is failing to recognize me. i've redone setup like 10 times already.

the biggest problem seems to be it only works in the conditions i did the original setup. These are some of the things that make it start missing nearly all of the time:

1. Putting on glasses
2. Laying down
3. Different lighting conditions (it has yet to work in any kind of dim light darkness at all)

im really starting to wonder how many real world scenarios Apple tested in

i am not seeing similar experience on the internet.....what am i doing wrong?
What are you doing wrong? If you look closely enough at your device, you'll probably find it's actually running Android. :/

I initially had issues with it. So I re entered my face id info but I made sure I was in a well lit room. After that no issues. try re doing your face id in a well lit room.

as for lying down, I haven't found a fix for it yet.

You dont need to put it straight over you face when lying down. It usually fails when I do that. I hold it futher down like I am looking down on it, and it always opens.

No issues here either, works in a dark room and me laying on my couch. I recommend rescanning on what others said to do and if issue still there take it back.

Edit: I don’t wear glasses, but possibly scanning without glasses on would be better as it’ll get a better scan of the face.

Only thing that’s been annoying for me is having to swipe up after successful FaceID unlock.

• when it fails to unlock, enter your passcode instead of sleeping the phone and trying again.. my understanding is that it will learn as you go along and the passcode is what's telling it that you're there and to remember the failed ID as being one that should be correct..

I wonder how iOS handles letting someone else use your phone? Because my wife set up FaceID, then I set up the rest of her phone for her, using her passcode at least 5 times. Then when I handed it over, FaceID wasn’t working as well as mine until she redid setup for it. Was it learning from my face all those times?

Just set mine up through the wizard it even unlocks while I’m in bed and it’s pitch black. Pretty amazing for me. It has some minor glitches but i’m bery happy so far.

My wife’s was way slower than mine and way less consistent. She was holding phone closer to her face and rotating her head super quick when she set it up. She redid setup further back (arm almost fully extended) and moved her head slower. Now it works super fast and at all angles for her.

That's a great suggestion. Mine was very consistent but slow. I just reset it as per your suggestion, and it is in fact way faster. Funny that not a single critics review suggested this

Good job

I set mine up with glasses when I first got it. Worked great until I got into bed and tried to unlock when it was dark.

I wound up having to redo the setup without glasses and now it works In the dark.

Your phone’s just not that into you.

Joking aside. It took a few runs through setup to get it to work quickly for me.

I found straight on while drawing a circle with your nose to work the best

Mine works in all the scenarios you listed, including pitch black.

I think you have a lemon, or you may need to figure out a different distance. How close/far away are you holding it? 10-20 inches is what Apple says is optimal.

Also, did you turn off the attention requirement?

The distance was it - when I lay down, I take off my glasses and have to move the screen close to see anything. But when I do that, the phone can't see my entire face! Moving it back to about a foot and it works much better.

When you redo the setup, are you moving your head around slowly? I moved mine pretty slow. I have no idea if that makes a difference, but I only had to do it the one time and FaceID has been brilliant for me.

Mine works well, for the most part, but I have a pair of ray bans that it seems to now like and, as a result, it doesn't unlock the phone.

Ouch. Maybe you have a defective unit. I set up face ID without my glasses. It still worked when I put them on later on.

When I first woke up this morning, FaceID didn't work. Entered my passcode, tried again and it worked. Probably because your face does change a bit when you sleep and the phone is still learning your face. It's only been one day. havent had an issue the rest of the day.

I am truly amazed at the distance and angles that it works at. With or without my glasses and in darkness too, I really expected the occasional rejection, similar to Touch-ID but had none at all so far.

I setup FaceID without glasses on. I only had two instances where FaceID wouldn't unlock the phone. I've unlocked with/without glasses and sunglasses, bright light, low light, no light.

Mine has been working perfectly with or without glasses. Haven’t tested sunglasses yet.

You might want to redo the setup. Mine works really well, though it does have its moments . Touchid is flawless in comparison for me .

Kinda dispointed it does not work when lying down on the desk, for me it really needs to be head on.

How well it works will vary person to person. Just like touchid did
