In other words... it's a waste of money..

Instead of actually spending money on a TESTED machine, why waste it on a prototype? It's not like it's worth more. It's just prone to more bugs!

But I guess people with money to waste would buy anything these days...

I have a first generation iPod the VERY first... anyone interested in buying it for their collection of iPods, can do so for 8 million bucks. ;p
I'll even include ALL the hits from that era... ;)

Sorry I just don't know why someone would by something like this...

Because the whole world runs to you with advice on what to "by" with their money...

In the grander scheme of things... :)

Here's your 15 minutes of fame...

Be smart, be wise and be cautious... then TAKE WHAT YOU CAN GET FOR IT AND RUN... :D

I would...

Screw the "fame." Being liked by a bunch of people you don't know is a stupid pointless waste of time.

I fear it's too late for you to return to anonymity now. Just clam up and hope you don't get "the call."

The Mac community. :p I don't think you'll receive a lot of buzz if it's a prototype Dell or something.

You obviously don't collect anything nor get any joy from anything that's not purely functional. Fun is simply no fun. Sometimes having something rare or just unusual is just enjoyment unto itself.

I notice the OP hasn't posted in almost 12 hours.

Must be considering his new found financial options...

Heck, I would be...:D

actually, an unmarked black van showed up at his house and two men in black suits forced themselves inside, and took him, has family, and his computer away and they are never to be seen again.

I'd call an Apple Store, and ask the manager if he'll give you a new one for it. It's possible Apple do want it back.

Call from a phonebox if you're paranoid. I wouldn't be. It's not like you've found the One Ring or anything.

Does the word "extortion" mean anything to you?

Do not take this machine to an Apple store unless you plan to give it to them, no strings attached. Asking for anything in exchange for it would be a very bad idea.

Why not linking it to yourself? If Apple wants to try to get it back they will find the owner anyway. I get logged here and you too.

The question is how this unit left Apple's campus. Is it by theft, what I wonder or is it because an employee took it home (accidently), what is basicly theft too, but I need to make a difference somewhere.

Best thing is to get in contact with Apple (that doesn't need to be Steve himself) about this unit. If you want to save yourself from any (further) legal trouble (Apple can already sue you for handling) it sure is the best thing you can do I think. Selling doesn't seem to be a good option in my eyes.

Apple might allow you to keep the unit, but chances are small.

Holy overeaction, Batman! Apple doesn't care. Sell it, keep it, whatever you want.

Yeah, I ran off and am on some small island with only solar power powering my macbook pro and satellite uplink, that is why I was gone for over 12 hrs.

Actually, I have a job, and can't sit around and monitor this all day.

Sorry.

The black vans haven't shown up yet, but I have heard helicopters circling.

Okay, this thing has really taken on a life of it's own.

I'll try to answer a few of the questions that were posted.

1. The screen is glossy (i too prefer matte)

That's the only question that I can remember from skimming all of the posts.

I've taken some pics of the battery and one more of the unit itself. wallpaper on it changed on it's own to the green screen with a few numbers on it after it had been on a while, I went to check and it was not set to rotate every xx# minutes....interesting.

Interesting. The bottom number is just the local loopback IP address. I wonder if since it is not connected to the network, it shows that address (instead of a 169.x.x.x)

Lucky you. I hear what you're saying about the job and all. I spend way to much time reading in these forums, but will easily admit, this is one of the best stories I've seen around here in awhile.

Whatever you decide to do, thanks for sharing this with all of us here at MR.

I usually pop by this site at least once a day so, to me it was the logical place to post the initial inquiry.

This whole thing has taken on a life of it's own, one of the other sites stated that the bottom case was black plastic (it's not it's aluminum).

Last night when I was trying to figure out what I had, I searched for macbook air prototype and not too much really came up, now the first two pages are all about this.

Funny.

Are you going to call Apple and figure what this "Stealth MBA" is all about? or keep quite and use it? or sell it and make some $$$?

I would keep it for some x0 years and then maybe sell it if not keep it on my own goldy collection :D

RE: Prototype Macbook Air #22

Brett33,

You are in possession of a prototype model Macbook Air #22. It is property of Apple Inc. and must be returned immediately. You may contact myself at stevejobs@apple.com or send the prototype unit to 1 Infinite Loop Cupertino, CA 95014 ATTN: Steve Jobs.

The unit was stolen from my napsack during a heated Segway Polo match against Steve Wozniak August 12 right outside of Cupertino. If it is not returned immediately I will be docked from ten months vacation time to nine months by the board. (Those ungrateful computer nerds....everything that I have done for them.....)

Sincerely,

Mr Steve Jobs
