If something doesn't look good with these, it will have to be re-designed ;)

EDIT: here's a pic (each 18p regular)

what is actually wrong with using comic sans?

Comic Sans is the red-headed stepchild of typography. It's much maligned, but I doubt many of the haters actually know why. In the words of it's creator: “If you love it, you don’t know much about typography and if you hate it you really don’t know much about typography either and you should get another hobby.”

Comic Sans was designed for a very specific product, and to that end, it served it's purpose remarkably well. However, it was never intended for general use. There's nothing wrong with it per se, but because of it's unique nature it is probably the most ubiquitous example of a "type crime".

Unless you're planning on bringing back Microsoft Bob, I wouldn't use it.

Myriad, Optima and Gill Sans are always a good choice, thanks for the image it looks good to compare the fonts like that

Helvetica Neue, Futura, DIN, Marke Eigenbau, and Semplice Regular :)

I should put this in the Web Design forum, but this is close enough to this topic.

From what I understand there are only a limited amount of fonts that can be used in web browsers. So why is it that I (and others here) can use other fonts that are the typical "web fonts"?

Like Century Gothic isn't a typical "web font" (at least I don't think it is). So could you code in the HTML any font you want and if that person has that font on their system it can be viewed?

Yes, you can use IFR (Inman Flash Replacement) to render your own fonts onto websites.

I keep going back to Avenir and Minion Pro.

For some reason, I just can't let them go.

Minion Pro I don't think has any flaws. Avenir is pedestrian, but every time I use something else, I'm annoyed.

I also used Zapfino on my wedding stuff.

So many alternates! That was fun. I'm not sure we used the same glyph twice.

For fun fonts, I'm a huge fan of Zapfino, Herculanum, Braganza and to a lesser extent these days (because it's been so bastardized in signage) Papyrus. For fun labeling, I sometimes use JazzText. Oh, and Dorovar.

For more normal fonts, I like Adobe Garamond, Baskerville, and I use Arial Rounded MT Bold when making illustrations. For general papers, I stick with Times.

My college typography professor would threaten us with violence if we used a pre-installed or system typeface in class. Brings back memories. There were some kids in there with us that just loved Courier. I wonder what they're doing for a job nowadays...

I prefer clean, simplistic and slender sans serif typefaces:
Helvectica Neue
Universe
Century Gothic
Avant Garde

As for serif typefaces:
Goudy
Baskerville
Copperplate
Bodoni (display text only)

I never ever use names of american cities as a font.

Also am I the only one who hates Papyrus more than anything in the world. Oh I hate it soo much!!!

utopia, century gothic.

I'm particularly fond of Calibri for everyday typing.

It works well in IM as well, I've noticed, as its very clear, yet its distinctive(well, at least among my friends, whom all use Arial or Courier New exclusively).

Oh how do I hate Papyrus, let me count the ways... I hate you as fake logos on business cards, I hate you when you're used as 9pt. body text, I hate you on every single label at an arts and crafts fair, I hate you on every other start-up website, I hate you on baby, bridal shower and party invites, I hate you on resumés, I hate you on three out of four PowerPoint presentations and I especially hate you on on home-made, store-boxed wedding invitations.

Ok, I think that's out of my system now.

Papyrus, Chalkboard, Cocktail and Comics Sans would have to MY MOST HATED FONTS.

I have lost count of how many times clients have requested for me to use these particular fonts in jobs (and I wont use them), they look crap and for some inane reason client are drawn to them like Paris Hilton to STDs.

If I could build a time machine and destroy the people who made these god awful abominations to the design industry I would.
