Back then phones were handible so I didn’t use a case and you can admire its design. Now phones are too big, glass, and slippery.

edit; oh and phones are now $1300 new, and it’s $399 just to replace a screen lol. Hence why they are hidden in ugly cases.

I have an SE atm, and I personally am of the same opinion as you about the 4/4s. It's sooo pleasing to look at and feels really nice to hold. My SE has been serving me well over the past year and some months and I can certainly say that I'll always use it in some fashion, even if not for a daily driver, until it kicks the bucket. :)

I primarily use my iPod 6.5g for listening to music, but my SE is a common second choice.

it’s crazy how the 4 chassis feels/looks so premium to this day imo. Apple really needs to go bad to that glass back/squared sides design, stunning.

Tbh the only reason i’m considering getting a new phone is because of the SE’s battery life. My battery health is currently at 87% which isn’t bad enough to warrant a battery change imo esp for a 3 year old device, but on a typical day before the whole coronavirus crisis i’d be out of the house from early morning to late evening and carrying around my charger everywhere just started to not be practical anymore :( a shame, it’s literally perfect for my needs in every other way.

you can theorize Steve probably obsessed on every single detail for its design.

Yes I would totally upgrade. Battery before the 8 iPhones were bad. You can’t go wrong with the new phones but of course after covid 19, it should be 1-3 months before the Apple event and new iPhones are announced. So I’m waiting 😆

The X. It is a beautiful piece of design which stood the test of time and also constituted a major departure for the iPhone design language known for a decade before. I also kinda like that it was only available in two colours (especially after the gold on 6, 6+ and 7 was veeery cheap looking).

Agreed! If you look at my signature, you can probably guess that I also wouldn't mind that they go back to older software and hardware designs for other products as well ;)

My SE's battery health is at 87% too. Given I'm at home most days it likely won't be a huge deal, I'll just plug it in when I need to. I might need to consider a battery replacement once I start going out more, depending on the battery health then. You might be able to optimize your usage to get more out of the battery if you aren't already doing so.

Overall, it's the 8 & 8 Plus for me. Two and a half years in and it's still a very good performer. The cleaned up design, the nice feel of the glass back, and, both the Product Red and Gold/Creme colors moves it just ahead of the iPhone 5s for me design-wise. I'm glad that it's getting a 2nd life as the new SE, hopefully, though I'm not sure I care for the supposedly black and white colors.

XR because of the true black colour (similar to the 7 just with glass back)

4/4s
5/5s/SE
X/XR/11 Pro

4 - A stunning design and is a miniature piece of art. And also surprisingly heavy because of the glass sandwich and steel chassis. It feels like a piece of premium jewellery. It’s amazing how small it feels compared to today’s phones, too! It feels like an artifact from another time when Apple produced magical miniature tech (only the AirPods Pro and Apple Watch fall into these categories now).

5 - An also beautiful piece of design. I had the 5s and the extra screen area plus 4G but still in a compact piece of design made this my favourite iPhone. Less premium in feel to the 4/4s but lighter than that phone due to the aluminium body, it was supremely usable. You could use it with one hand, for example. Imagine that!

X - I never owned this (PWM sufferer sadly so I have an XR) but you can see the care and attention that was lavished on its design, immediately. It’s the ‘greatest hits’ version of the iPhone design from the last 10 years before it. Beautifully balanced in weight, with the glass sandwich from the 4 and the steel chassis is just beautiful. And the Face ID screen implementation was virtually perfect out of the box.

Probably my iPhone 5S. It started getting slow towards the end with the latest software updates, but it was a great little phone. The 11 Pro I have now is a great one too. I also liked my 7, which I still have as a backup. Worst was iPhone 4, but I have some fond memories since it was my first iPhone. So I've had the 4, 5S, 6S, 7, and 11 Pro. You can see the 6S was the only one I didn't keep very long. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but I got excited when the 7 came out. The 11 Pro is the only one I bought months after launch. All the others I waited for hours in a long line at the Apple store on launch day. :)

The 4/4S with those sandwiched glass still looks perfect.
But I guess it's not using space most efficient, so I understand it's time is long gone.

I’m not going to lie, I love my XS Max. It’s awesome. Looks great too. Only regret is not giving my wallet a back breaker to get the newest one. But kids, other financial obligations..

My 4S is a close second when it comes to looks, very classy. I have mine which is black and hers is white, the white looks sexeh.

I would be interested in a iPhone 4 remix. 6.5 in screen,Face ID, etc, with a steel band and glass on front and back. Someone photoshop this.

iPhone 4 , i had a 5 that was good too , on an 8 plus now which I hate , particularly the abysmal battery life , wish I’d gone for the x

My personal favorite: iPhone SE from 2016. I loved the size and design.

My logical favorite: iPhone 11 Pro - the OLED and Cameras beat out the SE significantly.

The jet black iPhone 7 I think will always be my favorite. I’ve got a XS Max now and it’s amazing, but I still pick up my old 7 and mess around with it. It was like a shiny black pebble. When the screen came on it illuminated from within from invisible lines
