Feelings about iPad after iPhone 4

I'm wondering how many other people had the same thoughts as me about their iPad after just getting an iPhone 4

My thoughts after playing with the iPhone 4 for a day are that, even though I've had the iPad for about a month now, the iPad is the device that I'm still most excitied about, and by quite a long margin. OK, the iPhone 4 is an excellent phone but let's face it, it's just a phone, and we've all had those before.

I'm not prone to lapping up marketing hyperbole but this time I agree with Steve Jobs, the iPad really is a revolutionary device if, even after a month of ownership, it manages to nudge out my 12 hour old shiny new iPhone 4 as fas as excitement goes.

I love my iPad!

I just logged in here to start a thread called "I love my iPhone 4... but i still love my iPad more".

That pretty much sums it up, the iPhone is nice, and can do even more. Most of the time i'd much rather have the big screen though.

I am loving my iPhone 4, it is the new gadget after all, but it hasn't detracted from my usage of the iPad - the large screen makes the world of difference. Still, hopefully the iPad 2 takes advantage of the Retina display tech... and maybe the front facing camera now that Apple are pushing FaceTime?

I think they have both kicked it up a notch. The difference is that iPad has filled a gap in the computing realm where the iPhone has got better in that realm.

I will say though that the front facing camera doesn't seem to have legs. I don't ever see that as a must have addition to all this. These types of cameras have been available for years and are used by a very small segment of the population. Yes, there are those that can't live without. But, it is still not mainstream.

Me too.
The iPad has really changed how I work, and changed what I need from a device. My netbook has not been turned on for a month. A lot of my iPhone apps are accumulating cobwebs.

I played with the iPhone4 yesterday, and it is a much improved device. But I might hold-off getting one until it can run MyWi.

Actually the one thing that I was disappointed with was no front facing camera on the iPad and, with Facetime for the iPhone 4 aparently providing great software support for it, I now miss it even more.

When the iPad was launched and lots of people said "what's the point?" I immediately saw two compelling uses in my life:

1) Sofa Surfing - namely browsing while watching the TV.
2) Senior (or Silver) Surfing - giving older people some access to the internet.

I got my iPad for (1) above and it's been a spectacular success but I was also considering getting another one for my 86 year old mother who lives 250 miles away and now lives alone after my father died fairly recently. For that one I really wanted a way to create a bit more connection with her and I thought that a really easy video conferencing capability would be ideal so I was sad to see that not included. Maybe they didn't consider (2) a big enough market, or much more likely they're just holding that back for the next version.

Certainly in the UK more and more people are living alone, and it's an aging population. I can imagine that situations like my mother's and mine will become more common and, if done well, (2) above is a compelling addition to such people's lives. I might not have gone ahead with my plan because 86 might have been just a bit too old but if she was 10 years younger, or if it was my father who survived her (he was for more tech-savvy) then I would have been in the market for this in an instant.

This makes sense to me. The iPad is still a new device, the iPhone 4 is an updated device.

Could not agree more with the OP and others. While I love my iphone... I would much rather play strategy, read a book, or watch a video on the ipad. The iphone is used as a phone and for on the go music and email.

Completely agree! I'm usually first in line for Apple products, but I just can't see the iphone4 as any kind of upgrade to my 3gs. The screen is sharper, but it's still small so there is no gain there IMO. The 512mb is completely unused until programs come out to take advantage of it, and they will probably not be for a while and probably not be many of them. The form factor is ugly and looks like a 90's candy bar phone. The glass backing scratches easily. Dunno, I don't think I want to extend my 2 years with ATT and their horridly slow 3g for that, but I might jump in with Verizon if they get it.

As for the ipad, I just can't understand why anyone would even compare the iphone to the ipad, they are completely different form factors. The ipads screen BLOWS AWAY the iphone4 by simple virtue of being BIGGER, this is such a preschool concept that so many are failing to grasp. While there are things I wish Apple would address with the ipad, I completely love mine.

You may well be right, asides from standard phone/MP3 player features, all i really use is streaming radio.

Still, its very nice to have all the features when i cant have my iPad with me.

Sure, you are saying "whaaaat?" That is what I think when people make disconnect comparisons between the iPhone and the iPad, as if it's an either/or situation.

I love my iPad in the situations I use it for. I love my iPhone 4 (formerly 3GS) in the situations I use it for. What is the point of "taking sides" ?

I have an iPad and my wife got the phone yesterday. I checked it out and loved the screen/look but my ipad screen is pretty darn clear too.

And my 3g doesnt go out when I hold the sides lol.

For me, killer features:

iPad = Screen Size / 3G
iPhone = 720p video / 5mp camera / screen res


Being able to plug my iPhone4 into my iPad camera conneciton kit and copy the HD videos to it is the killer combo feature....

Ah. Interesting. I'm the OP and you've made me realise that there are two effects in play here as far as my reaction to the iPhone and iPad are concerned. I'd already appreciated how novel the iPad was for me because it's a new form factor, and one that I'd wanted for ages, but the other thing that I hadn't really appreciated is how old the iPhone is for me.

The thing is that I'm just the opposite to you, after over a decade of iPhone use I could never go back to a non-smart phone. Taken literally, I bought my first ever iPhone about 19 hours ago, but your comment made me realise that actually I've been living the concept daily since Feb 1999. I don't like mobile phones much so for me all smarphones, including the iPhone, are actually PDAs that happen to have a phone feature built in that is very handy for emergencies. As far as the main stuff is concerned, having hundreds of books in my pocket, carrying around critical documents, access to maps, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, managing my finances, games, etc - my Palm V had all that in 1999 and the most vibrant "app" community of the time so yes, the iPhone does it all massively better, but the basics have been there for over a decade, it's just that at the time it was a really geeky niche thing.

There is a lot of gain in the iPhone 4 screen, you can read very small text very easily, so you do a lot less pinching and zooming. Its also only on the iPhone 4 that book reader apps have become enjoyable. The 3g/3gs screen couldnt display enough sharp text per page.

Its still way off the iPad, but much better than the older phones.

Now that's true. For me it's folders; I'm so looking forward to being able to organise my iPad apps more efficiently.

Ok, I have only had a 5 minute play with an iPhone 4 (I'm still on a contract for my 3GS), but my poor eyesight (I need glasses to read smallish print) does not really allow me to fully appreciate a retina-display. That big display on the iPad however is far easier on my slowly failing eyes.

The iPhone 4 is a more 'mature' product, but I think we can expect to see some big improvements in the iPad over the next few months, with iOS 4 and new apps as developers start to make more of that bigger screen.

The iPhone 4 is nice, don't get me wrong, but you just have to be excited about the possibilities of the iPad. I can't really imagine the iPhone 5g doing anything that much different next year other than a 8mp camera and faster chip, but I could be wrong. The iPad 2 on the other hand is due for a major upgrade next year. So if u love your ipads now, pray to God you will be able to witness the second coming of it. Love the iPhone but I can't wait till the hype dies down, so we can start drooling over all the iPad 2 rumors.

My wife has an iPhone 4. I'm still under contract for 3GS as well. . I do love my iPad more (maybe cause it's mine). But I honestly, don't see the big fuss about the iPhone screen. It's just me though apparently. . I tried to explain it to my parents, they couldn't tell the difference, lol .

I love my iPad and still use it way more than my iPhone 3GS now.

However, FaceTime is pretty jAwesome, and the camera pictures on the iPhone 4 are incredible. Not worth $600 to me though (what AT&T wanted to charge me).

I had my iPad on for 2 days with light use and its still @ 100%

Apple broke the iPhone 4 Musically.
All the hardware that worked with the 3GS no longer works with 4.

I returned my 4 and hope to pick up another one in a few months after Steve gets off his High Horse (Unicorn)
