The ViewFinity S8 has a matte coating and I presume Samsung will use the same for the S9 and I don't think there has been any great outcry about the S8's matte coating.

I would prefer glossy since that is what I have been used to for almost a decade with my iMac 5Ks, but I need the ability to support multiple inputs (I will be using it with a Mac mini and a Windows PC) and that means the S9 is my only real option since the UltraFine and Apple Studio Display only have one input and I would therefore have to unplug the cable from either machine when I want to use the monitor with the other.

I'm starting to think that the chances of seeing rocking horse poo are greater than they are of ever seeing this thing being released!

One forum member is adamant that this display uses a new panel from Samsung Display and not the existing LG panel as used in the Apple Studio Display (and UltraFine and Illyama and the old Dell and HPE 5K monitors and iMac 5K).

If true, it is possible Samsung is having yield problems as they ramp production and are not yet ready to offer it for general sale.

My understanding is that products unveiled at CES take some time to come to market, more often than not.

Either way, there is hardly any competition in this space - and Apple, who Samsung is clearly intending to compete with given the styling, holds their prices high. So it isn't particularly risky for Samsung to delay. When Samsung *does* release it, they have to be ready for a wave - they want to be prepared to fulfill as many orders as possible to take advantage of the impulse buy crowd. So they will be building up stock for a brief while after production ramps before the release.

Well, I've decided to wait, at least for a few more months! I don't want to be sorry until we know the price and there are a few reviews out there!

Both are completely wrong.

Samsung sold their LCD plants years ago, and now source their LCDs from China's BOE, which is a current source of tension as Samsung think their prices are too high, hence why Samsung are rumoured to be partnering with LG on WOLED panels for their TV lines.

Samsung itself only makes OLEDs now.

As to the panel for this, it's made by BOE, and went into production in Q4 2022. Those of us who watch panel developments have been waiting for it to show up somewhere, and here it is. It was very obviously never the LG panel as the specs were very different aside from the resolution.

There are two additional 5K panels coming, one from BOE that is a 2304-zone mini-LED that should be ready for production, pending orders, and an LG panel scheduled for H1 2024 with 1560 zones that is probably destined to be the next iteration of whatever 27" thing Apple ships. But that's just a FALD LED panel, not mini-LED.

  • 27″ panel with 5120 x 2880 resolution (210 PPI), 350 cd/m2 brightness, HDR 600 support (600 cd/m2 peak), 98% DCI-P3 colour gamut. This is listed for Q4 2022 production.
  • 31.5″ panel with 6034 x 3384 resolution (210 PPI), 350 cd/m2 brightness, HDR 600 support (600 cd/m2 peak), 98% DCI-P3 colour gamut. This is listed for Q1 2023 production.
So the 27" panel will be going into the Samsung and I presume the 31.5" will be for the Dell UltraSharp 32 6K Monitor (U3224KB)?

Dell aren't using a BOE panel, we know this because it's an IPS Black panel, which are produced by LG.

Based on the pictures of the Viewfinity S9, it should look identical in design to the Viewfinity S8 (M80B and M80C) 4K displays.

I'm not as worried about the screen finish as I am about its price and the negative impact its "smarts" have on using it as a "dumb" monitor. I've never encountered a matte display finish that's been a problem for me, but smart TVs that have laggy basic functions (config menus, input switching, etc) as a side effect of running a bloated OS on underpowered hardware are ubiquitous.

I'm in the camp where I actually like the added features, and the fact that this monitor will most-likely work with a PS5 or something as well, as it has the ports to support it. I would be able to use a 5k monitor both for work and gaming and that's already a big plus vs the Apple Display (and vs the Ultrafine as well, iirc).

As far as glossy vs matte. Yeah glossy will always have my preference as it truly brings out the best picture. But maybe the finish will be more subtle than we think and will actually be a good in-between look.

I do think whatever finish it has, I'll get used to it quickly. Maybe the only "annoyance" will be having a macbook or other glossy screen beside it that might keep making you aware of the difference. Then again, just another first-world problem.
This is what I am hoping for! Have you seen official information about the ports? I've seen conflicting ones about if it has HDMI or not. I'm moving to a smaller place and don't have room for a TV in my bedroom, so I was hoping I could get this as a 5k display for my computer and gaming.

Looks like just TB4/USB-C and DP:

Aww, dang it! I'll have to keep waiting for the mythical 5k HDMI/ USB C monitor. Hopefully I can find a way to make my LG ultra fine 5k work with gaming consoles (though having a DP in would make that easier on this Samsung monitor). I know I can/ should get a gaming monitor, but I really like the 5k resolution for work and don't have space for a tv. Thank you for sharing!

I really hope Apple will announce Mac Pro + the new XDR screen 7K so I can make my monitor decision. 32-34 7K screen from Apple would be a great thing to get if not crazy expensive but otherwise I'll get this S9 or possibly M8 for the bigger screen.

Or maybe Dell will do 32" 6K version without the silly camera so I might get that instead.
Either way, I hope we get a preview whats cooking on Apple's end to help us decide.

You know a 7K XDR is going to be crazy expensive. 💰

Dell evidently released a cheaper version of the 4K version of this display that dropped the camera and such soon after so hoping they do the same with the 6K model.

I wonder when they are going to release the monitor. Dell already released their 6K monitor which was shown at the same time during CES.

Did they? Dell still doesn't have it on their website and you can't still buy it. Where did you see the release?
