Hi there Longtran. I actually was trying last night for some reason I couldn't go beyond configuration of the account on my Mac. Kept getting the can't connect to server error. Strange as I've done this many times before but because the duplicating issue I've always just deleted the account. I was hoping to try this 'new' method but as I said it couldn't connect to the server. I had all the correct settings!

Oh well... since you said it doesn't work, not sure I will bother. When you said you deleted 'On My Mac' account...did you actually go into the preference pane and select the Remove Account option? with the minus symbol? Not sure why doing that would remove from the iCloud too.

yeh. i selected all the contacts on my mac and deleted them the first time. just tried to delete 'on my mac' account in preferences. the result is still messy, everything still duplicated. IMO, im gonna leave address syncing till 10.6.9. ical syncing is good enough for me atm.

cheers mate

Solution

Looks like I FINALLY found a solution. Today I was (for an Xth time) trying to resolve duplicates in Address Book under 10.6.8. Well, I messed it up and lost some of my contacts (used Find Duplicates – WRONG idea).

However, I still had a backup of my contacts in VCF/vCard file. So, after removing EVERY SINGLE contact from my Address Book and iCloud, I created iCloud setting again in Address Book.

I've imported VCF file through iCloud web page Address Book web app (wheel icon in bottom left corner).

Now everytime I update iCloud contacts everything works OK, no duplicates created.

BUT: as I lost my contacts, I also lost images in these contacts. Imported VCF file is without contact images.
When I create new contact with image in it, this contact (and ONLY THIS ONE) gets duplicated.

So, short solution:
1.) Remove any images from all of your contacts ON YOUR MAC (not in iCloud)
2.) Export your contacts to VCF file from your Mac by dragging out the folder „On My Mac“ from your Address Book to your Desktop
3.) Delete whole content of folder ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book (make a backup just to be sure)
3.) Remove EVERY contact on iCloud (login to iCloud page, remove it from there – I don't suggest to do it in Address Book)
4.) Import created VCF file DIRECTLY to iCloud through AdddressBook on iCloud web page (not to Address Book on your Mac)
5.) NEVER, EVER create contacts with pictures – these contacts will be duplicated.

Hello,

I followed the directions correctly I think but I keep on getting this error message:

The CardDAV server returned an error (405) for the user “usernameATme.com:password”.

Any ideas anyone?

Same as AliensX

I arrived up to the point where trying P01-P10 would give me a 501 error with my usernameATmeDOTcom.

I give up. Does someone have the email address of Tim Cook to ask him for SL iCloud syncing?

Help

Can someone please help with this. I have followed all the instructions carefully. However, I am still confused with all the smiley face, etc. in the server and username fields in the plist examples that people are posting. Can someone just spell it out in clear terms exactly how the information should be entered.
Thanks

The smiley appears because of the forum software. What it should be displaying is a colon : folowed by the letter p, ie : p without the space. The code for the smily with the tongue sticking out is rather unfortunately the same, and results in a :p appearing in the middle of the string.

Still not working

I followed the directions given. After following the directions, I had to go back into address book preferences and add my password again. Then, syncing between my Mac address book and iCloud works. If I add a simple card into address book, it doesn't duplicate. But, if I add a card with a note containing multiple lines (i.e. with newline chars), it duplicates. There may be other dup circumstances as well, but this alone make it unusable for me.

Read this entire thread before deciding on trying this backdoor Snow Leopard to iCloud workaround... needless to say I can't afford the heartache it's going to cause from just not working like Apple's SW is known to work.

In the end, it truly saddens me that Apple did not include just one previous OS in the iCloud consideration zone! Honestly... Lion is not for everyone, I for one haven't upgraded, but to drop the previous OS from this syncing service is a slap in the face. I'd love to utilize these features that we're essentially Mobile Me previously; so really Apple, I ask you what is the deal here? Can't they compute that their iCloud service would reach a multitude of more users therefore equating to be more iCloud premium subscribers?

I salute the geniuses that are grinding to cleverly back door these features, but Apple really needs to focus on getting their engineers involved here; as in like 6 months ago too!

No Errors No Contacts

After going through a plethora of error messages I now get none and no contacts. Blank

caldav works fine (with reminders!)

I find I get BAD url with no password in the Username field and another error with no password in the prefs pane field.

I have contacts on the cloud and like i said cal dav works

I also don't have write access (can't add a card)

Appears something has changed cause I am getting the same error. Even with mail it keeps prompting for my password and not downloading my messages. iCal working great, but Address Book & Mail causing grief.

How to find the XX in pXX-contacts.icloud.com

Lifesaving info: http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/snow-leopard?before=1326491344

Repeating here because of its value:

To find out your iCloud ID and iCloud Server Number, you need to run Safari and sign into your iCloud account.

Pick Calendar or Contacts and choose Windows —> Activity from menu bar.

You should find something similar to this:

p03-contactsws.icloud.com/co/mecard/?dsid=1325673149

From the image above, my iCloud ID would be 1325673149 and my data are stored in server p03.

Finally works (but with duplicates)

Finally got my Address Book on Snow Leopard populated from iCloud.
In Address Book, under the Groups column, I had "On My Mac",
and the name of my iCloud account (I called it "icloud AB").
All the groups and all the contacts showed up under both "On My Mac"
and "icloud AB". I deleted all the contacts and groups from "On My Mac",
then quit and relaunched Address Book. Got no duplicates.

But I now notice some undesirable behavior related to disappearing cards.
Need to investigate a bit more.

One extra hint. I really had to place my actual password in the .plist file (not just "password"); don't like that much. Also, my password had a special character in it, which caused Address Book grief. I had to use the %nn equivalent for the special character. This URL can help with special characters:
http://www.ascii.cl/
By the way, the 40 in %40 is hex.

Retraction: I get duplicates, much as with post #24

I do see some duplicates, very much as described in post #24.
And it does not seem adviseable deleting one of the "duplicates" -
that appears to delete the sole copy showing up in my icloud.com address book, and various IOS devices sync'ed to iCloud.

This hack is not quite up to standard Apple quality.

Syncing

I followed the instructions, and was able to get Address Book in 10.6.8 to load my iCloud contacts. I don't use photos, so I haven't had any issue with duplicates. BUT - changes seem to be one-directional. If I edit (or delete) a card on Snow Leopard, the iCloud database is updated, and the changes are pushed to all my other devices. However, if I edit or delete a card on my iOS or Lion devices, the Snow Leopard Address book never sees the change. If I delete the iCloud account and re-add it, the new data is correctly displayed. Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

Hey Guys after nearly one day of browsing and error and trial all day long i managed to get it working using this site
i hope it would help you all in creating the iCloud AB

cheers;)

Thanks for the great tutorial, but I am still having problems.

Please see my note that I emailed you. A couple clarifications in the tutorial, and we might just have a winning process to follow.

----------

Also, this might have already been mentioned, but if you're having problems, try putting your password in the user name field, and putting just a single space in the password field.

Once I put the space in, it started synching for me.

rmanke,

You wrote: "Please see my note that I emailed you. A couple clarifications in the tutorial, and we might just have a winning process to follow."

Could you please share those clarifications?

Also, are you able to sync including those contacts that have pictures with no problems?

Thank you

I'd like some further clarification. I am getting the error that my username or Password is not valid for the server pxx-contacts.icloud.com.

Everything in my plist file is like the example.

It has to be something simple??:(

I finally got it.

I deleted the folder:

~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook

Restarted the computer.

Started Addressbook and set up the carddav account.

It's working.

Man this is the most difficult config I've done on my Mac since we had to use the old MacPPP prior to FreePPP to get a dial up connection to the internet.

I tried this thing several times over the past 5 or 6 evenings.

Multiple Duplicate Issue

Hello,

After a couple months, has anybody been able to find a solution to the duplication issue? My address book has close to 800 contacts. iCloud displays everything correctly, so does my iPhone. But my MBP AB basically keeps re-downloading the entire address book every single time it syncs. So within a couple minutes I'd gone up to 6000 contact entries. Thankfully they don't sync back into iCloud but I really need help in solving this issue.

the Configuration.plist file seems to have two entries which are a bit confusing. Anybody know how the following two should be setup?
Code:
	<key>haveWriteAccess</key>
	<integer>1</integer>

	<key>serverSupportsSearch</key>
	<integer>1</integer>

Thanks for your help in advance!
