Those prices almost made me sick. I would only ever buy this abroad (USA). Yes, I know, sale tax. You show me where sale tax is that much!!
Hell.... the AppleTV has been discounted by 25% in the US, which is great. But in Australia... no change in price (but the website does say "new" on the aTV, and all other new products have been added).

I wish Apple would consider us as important.

Yeah when Wireless USB gets popular. Where the F is the Wireless USB in this computer??? Its not there, period.

Dumb dumb dumb. Ladies and germs, want a lighter macbook? Buy a $1099 macbook and take out the CD drive. That cuts about 10 oz out of the thing. Get a faster processor to boot.

The palm foleo was a way better device than this given that it was much more portable.

Who the hell said this thing fits in a hand bag? Not on your life. Maybe the $10,000 Gucci/Prada/Louis bag you got lying around.

The fanboy noobs are out in force today. They have no respect for us old timers who got in the game (and subsequently out of) long ago.

This was designed by an accountant. Think about it. Apple buys a ton of 13.3" screens, chicklet keyboards and 80 GB 1.8" drives. Why not take advantage of our economies of scale on these items and design an ultralight around them.... BRILLIANT! NOT! This is what GM does when it designs the next Chevy/Pontiac/Buick.

12 year olds, go ask your dad about economies of scale.

Missed the mark

The MBA is nice, but not realistic.

First, I think Apple missed the mark on this one in that they went for style, and threw function to the wind. Apple, historically, has been able to combine both, and on this one they went a little far ahead of themselves, and the market for that matter. I don't think the market, and average computer users, are yet at that stage where you can completely eliminate, or almost, all connectivity to your laptop.

One MR posted that we are squabling about certain features etc. etc. etc. and that we are not the target market. But my point is precisely that this product doesn't fit any one market, except for the gadget happy consumer, and the naive materialist. (wait.... maybe that is a viable market ;) haha)

Second, the 13" screen is too bid to for it's target market. It doesn't completely reach the portable market, nor does it reach the student market because of its size, and lack of functionality. (You don't have to take my word for it, but there are still thousands of people who use the optical drive in their notebooks on the go).

Finally. I used to work for one of the largest electronics retailers in Canada, and I can tell you from experience that the new HD they will be using, which is found in the 80gb ipods, is a pile of ^$%#. I can't tell you how many ipods we replaced on a weekly basis because of defective hard drives, and problems arising with them. It'll be interesting to see what comes of this.

So, a) missed the mark; b) screen too big; c) Iffy hard drive.

Although I do find the next multi-touch track pad amazing.!! well done on that front.

Of all the announcements today, here is one where the positives definitely overwhelm the negatives. Ok, internal battery. This is expected in such a small device. Hopefully they will have a battery replacement program. Choice of 1.8" drive or solid state is pretty good, although pricey on the latter. Anyway, the laptop is beautiful and something beyond what other manufacturers offer. I have lived with a glossy display on my MacBook for over a year and it has mostly been good. All said and done I don't think I am going to buy one as I prefer performance over size. I would expect this device to be most popular with women and wealthy students.

Conclusion: Kudos to Apple for producing this breakthrough slim laptop.

It is a computer, not a fashion statement, it is not an accessory to make you look wealthier and classier but rather facilitate your needs. Yes this is suited for certain people and yes it is very pricy rather than little. I don't see the difference in portability between this and a regular macbook, I really don't think anybody is going to carry it in an envelope, but rather a bag, where a macbook fits perfectly. Having said the lack of innovation in portability, might as well get a top notch macbook with all the goodies for cheaper price, or a macbook pro for about the same price. I was expecting more from apple, I think that apple should've released instead a 13" macbook pro.

Too thin if you ask me

I like my new Blackbook but I consider it a bit wimpy. I got a new DELL from new EMP and it's built like a ROCK --screen does not flex like my personal Blackbook. Apple needs to toughen up not lighten up...

Steve jobs is getting old.

His whole marketing idea was to introduce this garbage on an envelope?
Lol...and people oohhh and ahhh at that i think they completely forgot
how much is lacking.

Boo....

Looks like a protoype to me.....

and for 3k for a decent model only because of teh ssd option.
horrible.

They should have a Q & A SECTION at macworld for steve so that he can
answer questions like. @ WHY ARE YOU RIPPING YOUR LOYAL FOLLOWERS BY RELEASING A 400 DOLLAR COMPUTER AND CHARGING 3K FOR IT.
questions like that you know

1.8ghz processor-get real
2gb onboard at that-get real
no ethernet-get real
no optical drive and no external drive included on the 3k package-get real.
NO REPLEACEABLE BATTERY?

WE ALL KNOW 2GB OF MEMORY EVENTUALLY WILL BE A THING OF THE PAST-IT TOOK a couple of years for apple to realize that 512mb of ram was not enough
i guess they feel like the future versions of mac os will not need more then 2 gb of ram. Talk about killing its evolution and future proof

so portable that you have to log around-the external drive-the ethernet usb around-you want wwan lug around the hsdpa usb around-external drive because 80 or 64 is not enough this days.
i dont think all this will fit on that envelope he so proudly displayed the computer with. PORTABILITY LOL you still need a bookbag with bags for it. MACBOOK YOU STILL REIGN SUPREME
He just skipped the 160 1.8 version which im sure will be added in a couple of months. This certainly will not be apples year..people are starting to see pass the reality distortion field.

I don't think the market, and average computer users, are yet at that stage where you can completely eliminate, or almost, all connectivity to your laptop.

which is why this isn't made for the average computer user. it's made for people who need something small and would be willing to pay for it. for people who sacrifice power for portability.

What's so great with Air??

I can't understand what all the fuzz is about. I'm a huge Apple fan. But this time I can't figure out what's so great...

Bad things..
Slow, expensive, not upgradeable, no dvd, no ethernet, no exchangable battery.

Good things...
Thin??

What's up Doc?? Have I been sleeping to long and is this April fools day?

explain to me how i use imovie on the macbook air. without a firewire port, how can i import video? (i'm guessing that i just can't).

is the hardware so great that it doesn't need iLife to sell? (idvd and imovie, anyway)

must be for business people

I predict over 38% of them get sent back for broken screens. Too much flex, too thin, too fragile.

I also see some overheating problems from not having enough heatsink or cooling fan potential. Even my Cruzer flash drive gets hotter than heck.

This is even more limited than Apple's USUAL efforts to hold a leash. I doubt this will be much of a buzz product.

Duh, But it's not small!!!! It's huge.....:(

which is why this isn't made for the average computer user. it's made for people who need something small and would be willing to pay for it. for people who sacrifice power for portability.

Sure it could be a good computer. If it had a 10-12" monitor, a superdrive and was upgradeable. But It's NOT. :(

The fanboy noobs are out in force today. They have no respect for us old timers who got in the game (and subsequently out of) long ago.
And thank the gods for that - I was SysAdmin of a System 7 network, complete with Apple's "Server" of the day, and you know what? I'd take a MacBook Air any day over that experience.

This was designed by an accountant.
No, but the Quadras and Performas sure as hell were.

OK, this thread proves there's just no pleasing people. No matter what.

It's like you want everything that the big notebooks have, but be smaller without compromising anything.

You're like an old lady at the check-out at a grocery store that buys $200 worth of groceries and tell the guy "I want it all put into one bag...and I don't want it to be heavy".

Crybabies

Wow, there are a lot of whining crybabies here. I am starting to think most of you are paid by Sony and Microsoft (etc.) to create FUD.

Final Decision

I've made a few comments and replies and this is my final word:
To have this laptop is a mere luxury. I can see a potential market for this: rich kids who love to show off. I don't think this is fit for students, musicians, photographers, Video producers, developers. This laptop would be popular, for those who would use it as a fashion statement.

For an average user like me, who is a student and who loves to produce beats every now and then, this is not for me. Based on portability I don't know what difference it would make this to a regular macbook. I won't be carrying a macbook air in an envelope but rather in a bag, where the other fits. To me the design is very poor and it looks very fragile, I'd rather have something I could easily grasp to. I don't like glossy screen, my house is quite bright during the day. Memory sucks, no speakers, lack of usb drive, no firewire, attached battey (I can imagine shipping my laptop for a replacement, yikes!): I think my iphone can be more useful. And finally, the price....OMG don't even get me started.

Conclusion, instead of buying this I'll wait for the introduction of a new macbook pro, hopefully a 13", and I would be the first buyer.
