Oh yeah, the name sucks too.

it would have made sense if it had some form of, you know, over-the-air connectivity ... like a WWAN of some sort... maybe a slot for an EVDO or WiMAX or HSPA modem. Then "Air" would have been a semi-sensical name for it (fitting into the other apple "air" products, as having a strong focus on a key wireless service).

Or maybe they forgot to mention that you can hook up all of your peripherals to a Time Capsule and dock-via-wifi? (or maybe said wireless dock is coming later, who knows)

Otherwise, what's the point of the "Air" name? (above and beyond "what's the point of this device in general?")

What it is is a super thin, light, easy to carry around laptop to use as a second computer... for travel... client meetings... presentations... etc. So if you're a professional and you have the cash... you could have your workhorse Mac Pro tower at home... and this sweet little thing for on the road.

If that's what they intend, then why aren't they announcing/marketing it that way?

You can't read I guess. Is it a macbook pro because the screen size is the same? LOL. Re-read the post dude. Oh, never said the T61 was a airbook. The T61 is what the next Macbook Pro needs to be. Oh yeah but with an apple logo on it. :D

So the next Macbook Pro needs to be more like the T61? You mean thicker, heavier, slower and uglier?

uh, can't agree with you there.

People who want max portability, these days, go with an UMPC or a MID.

What bone did Apple throw them today?

An UMPC? no.
A MID? no.
A tablet/laptop (laptop screen swivels so you can use it tablet mode)? no.
A conventional laptop that has a smaller footprint than a MacBook? no.

Just another conventional laptop. Same footprint as a MacBook, just thinner.

Who cares?

Lets just re-arrange chairs on the deck, shall we?

Last year was the year of the UMPC. Where was Apple's UMPC?
This year is the year of the MID. Where's Apple's MID?

And don't tell me it's the iPod Touch -- sure, adding on those 4 apps gets it one step closer to being a half-assed MID, but it's still not there (and what's with paying $20 for apps that should have been on it from day one!?). I'll be impressed with it as a MID when it has an ssh client (that doesn't cause later updates to brick your device), a vnc/remote-desktop client, VPN of some sort (pref. openvpn), support for bluetooth (HID, FTP, and DUN or PAN), and either a virtual keyboard you can use in landscape mode, or a slide-out physical keyboard. Oh, yeah, and an open SDK. THEN it'll be an acceptable entry into the MID market.

This was the most underwhelming keynote I can remember. And the most underwhelming announcement of the bunch was the MacBook Air.

The UMPC has been a failure as a platform generally. People who want max portability these days go with a UMPC? Where do you get that from?

Most people who are looking for portability still want some degree of general usability for common tasks; the UMPC's usually fail in this because their screens are so incredibly tiny and their input methods so uncomfortable (try typing a multi-page document in Word on a Samsung Q1 or a Sony UX) that they fall down there.

A machine like a Sony TZ is still infinitely more usable than any UMPC for most things it is supposed to be capable of; the benefit of a UMPC being able to run Windows, Office, etc. becomes kind of useless when it is practically unuseable for those kinds of apps.

Not to mention that the performance of most UMPC's to date make it clear they aren't yet ready to run full apps well, etc.

The only really compelling UMPC use I've seen recently was some of the stuff Intel showed off at CES, with a Linux-based Samsung Q1 UMPC running some pretty slick digital audio production/performance stuff.

it would have made sense if it had some form of, you know, over-the-air connectivity ... like a WWAN of some sort... maybe a slot for an EVDO or WiMAX or HSPA modem. Otherwise, what's the point of the "Air" name? (above and beyond "what's the point of this device in general?")

The "Air" name emphasizes the lightness of it, generally. "Light as air".

this machine is amazing! its everything I want from a ultra portable. The only thing that bugs me is the non user replaceable battery but I guess it had to be this way to get it this small. I just ordered one to replace my macbook. I can't wait! :D

criticize it all you want but criticize it for what its is and what its meant to do, and not to criticize it against what YOU WERE expecting, this is not for those who want a smaller MBP and its not for those in the macbook-price market. it was designed for people that want the lightest/mobile machine possible in the smallest package possible w/o sacrificing on the full size kb/screen and who are willing to pay a premium for apple's latest technologies.

The simple difference is that the iPod is a toy. If I don't have it, I can live without it. The iPhone is a little different, but again, I can go without it for a couple of days. Even so, I'm not happy with the prospect of having to send it in. The saving grace is that cell phones tend to get replaced fairly often, at least for me.

However, a computer is different. My livelihood depends on having my computer, and having to send it in to replace a battery is absurd. I should be able to just pop a new one in, which has already happened with my mbp.
$400 phone vs 1800 notebook, hmm yeah I would be more concerned about sending the notebook in. Shoot I didn't like having to send my wifes Macbook in to get the mobo replaced and her system was all kinds of FUBAR. Sending in her notebook to get a battery replaced would drive me bonkers...

Even more curious, while your MBA is in for service is Apple going to offer a loaner notebook, like how they offer a loaner phone for the iPhone?

Man, some of you people crack me up.

"for 800 less i can get a macbook which is only 2 lbs heavier!"
- have you ever left your basement? 2 lbs is a LOT of weight when you have to travel often and lug it around. If the macbook were 7 lbs and cost half as much, you'd complain about that.

"this product is doomed to failure"
- ok nostradamus

"steve jobs has no idea what he's doing"
- and you have how many million in the bank?

"i want x,y,&z AND have it cost <$1000"
- and i want to buy a football team.

Expo disappointment

This Macexpo is much of a disappointment to me and also kinda expected to happen.

Macbook Air had more or less sum up the whole line of Apple Laptop. (Good For Apple.)
The "Oldest" Line MBP lack the revamp in terms of its basic spec. As I had already expected a SLim from Apple sooner or later but the current line's processor nonetheless need constant revamp when Intel comes out with new processor for mobile.

Not to mention Dell and Asus has a few line of laptop and their upgrade is incremental. Example from Intel Core Duo to Intel Core 2 Duo. So their Fans, rich ones can get the latest and poor ones can get the older one first.

In Apple's case, the just do not want to bump the speed at one go to affect each (MB/MBP) sales. Or else I do not know what is keeping them from doing this.

Well after this expo, I setting my hands on a new MBP 15.4" and it is time to "Recycle" my ibook 12"

Ok, i've posted a lot in this thread, mostly hate towards the new MBA. I have done some reading, looked around and have actually softened up to the idea a bit, here's my take on it now after taking a step back.

This laptop is actually pretty nice, it has a specific market in mind, and will be a very light laptop that will appeal to those who just want a basic computer to carry around, and are willing to pay a high premium to barely know that they're carrying around a computer at all.

I realized the reason i was so down on the MBA was NOT because of what it was, but because of what it wasn't. I was looking for my next laptop, this is certainly not it. The laptop most of us were all waiting for was a small version of a MBP that we were willing to pay a premium for. Thinking about it, this isnt outside the realm of possibility, in fact i think when they update the line it might just be in the cards. But making an announcement like that wouldnt warrant the neccesary spotlight of the macworld keynote, THIS product would.

There are a few facts that the people buying this laptop HAVE to come to terms with (and likely will). They will be limited to wireless connections for internet unless they want more bulk, they will have to deal with no optical drive unless they want more bulk. They will HAVE to get the laptop's battery replaced at some point, this is inevitable. Hopefully the buyers don't find later that they need more laptop, because this certainly isn't going to be upgradeable.

This is NOT cutting edge tech right here, this is for lack of a better term a "disposable" laptop. And although i still feel the pricepoint a bit high, it certainly isn't astronomical, especially considering any other company (besides dell) would likely charge an even higher premium for the same laptop.

I STILL have qualms about the footprint of this laptop, but honestly this was going to HAVE to be a requirement for the computer to have a wide screen as well as a full size pitch keyboard. This is not the laptop for most of us, it will probably do moderately well in the marketplace, but i still believe it's going to be met with lackluster reviews. The iPhone was a pretty nice powerhouse compared to some PDAs, and following it up with a mostly asthetic laptop with lackluster performance seems like mixed messages from Apple.

I certainly hope that a 13 inch macbook pro is in the works however, and that is something i WOULD be willing to shell out a premium for.

There was a small MacBook Pro, it was the 12" PowerBook and I have one. the problem with a screen that small is that, unless it is very high resolution, you can't even fit the formatting palette of Word next to your document; you have to put it over the document. You say you want a very small MacBook Pro, but what would that realistically achieve? the screen isn't big enough for any kind of serious work (or really even editing basic text) and it won't have enough power to run "pro apps" comfortably (I know this from experience)
If it wasn't for Apple, we would have been using floppies for another five years. Apple knows the future, this I am sure of. They went with Intel when everyone knew that the AMD processors wiped the floor with anything intel could invent, and now look, Intel makes the best CPUs in the world.
My point is, this could very well be the future. I bet in a few years you are going to wonder how we ever used non-widescreen displays!

Sit back and enjoy the next step in truly mobile laptops. ;)

I have posted a lot here today - got pretty excited about the shortcomings of the Macbook Air.

I have just watched the keynote, and watched Steve take it out of the envelope.

I take back my criticism - I am getting one!

This thing is beautiful - you need to see it held in the hand.

I keep thinking that without Apple, things would be so bad in the computing world.
Does it have some issues, yeah, but its so sweet!
The hell with my doubts - I'm in Steve!

The current MBP isn't really in a particular need of a revamp; the Penryn processors will surely come soon, but they offer small percentage improvements in battery life and performance; nothing major yet. The 8600M GT is still one of the better GPU's you can get in a 15.4" notebook, especially a 1" thick 5.4 pound one.

Also, Apple hasn't shown any concerns about updating one line without the other; the MBP got the Merom C2D's months before the MacBook, for example.

I'm not sure what you mean about the difference with Dell and Asus; they generally only use the latest CPU's in most of their laptops as well; i.e. the XPS M1330 and XPSM1530 both only offer the latest C2D CPU's now.

Complaining about CPU's in this case seems bizarre to me, given that Apple seems to be using an Intel CPU that they haven't made available in other ultraportable systems.

So would this be okay or good for a college student?

Depends on your needs, really. I think the regular MacBook might be a better option though.

I am not sure how to take this. I think it might have stepped a little TOO far ahead. A minimalist notebook is very cool, but optical drives are still so important in many places (this shared optical drive" thing is crap, and $99 for a drive is not acceptable. No Ethernet is ok (most wireless connections are faster than the broadband speed anyways)
.

I disagree. Apple has not gone far enough.

The keyboard + trackpad should pop out and be usable elsewhere via bluetooth.
The display should rotate and pop out. Option for touch display.

Include an Expansion Slot or even better wireless
- to which an optional Expansion Bay connects
for - usb firewire express card audio/video i/o

I have a question ........

How many of the "whiners" on here have ACTUALLY TRAVELED with their laptop?

I bought a MBP almost exactly one year ago. I've done two nationwide tours with rock bands and a number of one off shows. there are 3 things I NEVER used while traveling with my MBP.
1. ethernet. where can you even FIND a wired network to use anymore ( other then at home or in the office ) ? ( hell I've only used it to config routers/modems anyways.. the 30 bucks to buy one would EASILY be covered by ONE install. )

2. Firewire. I fully believe that firewire is better then USB. I own mostly firewire external HD's ( of course they all have USB also .. and it's harder and harder to find a FW drive lately it seems... ) my iPod, iPhone, thumb drives, and digital still camera all do not use firewire they use USB.

3. I have not purchased, nor needed a second battery. I have had it replaced at the apple store. for them to have opened my machine dropped in a new battery closed it back up and handed it to me would have taken ABOUT 30 mins longer then it took to just get a new batt ( well to have it replaced under warranty.. just buying and walking out would have taken less time.. but again .. I've never needed a second one...). Apple stores are getting more and more common . The Denver metro area alone there are 4 ( and maybe 5 now).

I have 3GB of ram ..... I quite often have well over 1GB of ram free and I consider myself a power user. On one of the tours this machine was used for video production/projection during the concerts. worked perfectly with only 1GB of ram.

I have a 120GB drive in the machine. It's BARELY half full. I keep all of my music and movies on a second HD anyways. (for 2 reasons 1. I have an iPod to listen to the music with and I can always hook up my drive to watch a flick..... besides if my HD takes a crap I can format with little to no information lost. )
My only issue is the slower 4200rpm drive. it will boot slow and load programs slow. HOWEVER..... once safari, mail, ichat ( or adium in my case) are loaded once how much faster does it need to be? so it takes an extra 10 ( just a random number I picked) seconds to load up word, or powerpoint. Plan ahead 10 seconds in life and launch the program earlier.

The speakers on the MBP are not exactly all the great anyways. using headphones is common. might as well kill the speakers and save some weight.

Need to load new music? buy it from the itunes store.
Wanna watch a movie? same thing.
no optical drive needed.

as many have said the macbook air is targeted as a SECOND computer.. do your hardcore vid editing on your mac pro. grab your macbook air jump on that plane to wherever do the show ( or the presentation, using the miniDVI out ) write some e-mails and watch the rest of that movie you rented on the iTunes store on the way back home.

All this having to carry two pounds less while running thru the airport to catch your connecting flight 2 concourses over when your first plane landed late.

I'm wanting to watch the guided tour on the Apple.com site but I ain't getting no audio from the tour video.

Edit: ok, I can get sound from the small video, but not the medium or large ones.

Anyone else having this issue?

A bit disappointed...Not quite enough for me and then, no MBP update, meaning I waited to buy until MWSF for nothing. Maybe I'll hold out in the hope of a minor update on the MBP soon.

No Touchscreen Display!

I can't believe Apple didn't incorporate their touchscreen technology into the display. I know Jobs has said he doesn't see Apple in the tablet market...but it seems only logical at this point in time, with Apple gaining market share on all fronts. I know I would have bought an Apple tablet. Oh well.

Can a regular Magsafe power adapter from a MacBook or MBP be connected to the Air? The Air's Magsafe looks different, but are the connectors actually different?

Light = good, as far as kit you have to carry around is concerned.

Where Apple has dropped a clanger is confusing "thin" with "small". Not the same thing.

I don't really care if it's 1/4" thick or 3/4" thick. But I'd like one I can squeeze onto one of those little round tables in [insert name of preferred coffee retailer] when there are two people sitting at it - and the other one has a magazine. A notebook where I don't have to plan ahead to take it out of the house... just put it in it's little case and throw it in whatever bag I'm taking with me. One I can use on an economy flight without it becoming a major undertaking just to get it out from under my feet and open the lid.

And if an extra 1/8" means I can get a firewire port on it... I'd rather have the firewire port.

It's a great technology demonstration. Now, Apple, make me a notebook I actually want. Or haven't you been reading these forums for the last year?

Very good points, and I think this illustrates exactly the point here.

The MacBook Air isn't going to be all things to all people; but it expands the available portable Mac options with a third option that Apple hasn't had in a while (and especially not a laptop in the 3 pound range).

It seems like some people are looking at it, seeing it doesn't meet their own deeds, and deeming it to be unnecessary or stupid or not suitable for anyone.

But this isn't the case. It has its own strengths and weaknesses, just like Apple's other machines and many other manufacturer's systems.

No machine is 100% perfect. I've seen so many comparisons to the TZ (natural of course given that this is what Jobs used as the comparison in the keynote), but the TZ is not the end all be-all either.

I personally had considered a TZ for quite a while, but I found the screen to just be too small for me, and the keyboard to be just too tiny to comfortable type on. I owned an SZ for a bit, but had issues with it as well (didn't like the keyboard, and some other things).

Is the MBA perfect? No, of course not. But I think it makes for an interesting third portable Mac option, and the compromises it makes are not compromises for those who don't need those options; I've rarely ever used the optical drives on most laptops I've owned in recent years. One of the other laptops I'd been strongly considering was the ThinkPad X61, which has widely been praised, and is also an optical-drive-less machine. The X61 has an absolutely amazing keyboard, but it also has a pretty mediocre screen.

I think Apple has done a nice job here, and added a nice option to their product lineup that gives Mac laptop buyers another option to consider. For some people, the MacBook is more than fine. For others, the MBP is the right choice. But it's not hurting anyone to have the MBA as an option too.

A bit disappointed...Not quite enough for me and then, no MBP update, meaning I waited to buy until MWSF for nothing. Maybe I'll hold out in the hope of a minor update on the MBP soon.

Apple may be skipping the basic Penryn CPU refresh, and just waiting for the new Montevina platform in the Spring for a real MBP update.

I think this probably makes sense, given that the various Penryn benchmarks so far seem to generally show no more than 5-10% increases in performance and battery life.
