I was under the impression that the original country-wide network was created by CERN. (A European nuclear research organisation), and the network was created on applemacs.

The World Wide Web was designed by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN using a NextCube running (funnily enough) NEXTSTEP.

Next was the company owned by Steve Jobs after he was ousted from Apple. Gil Amelio was running Apple at the time and neither he nor Apple under his tenure had anything to do with the creation of the World Wide Web.

The internet is a descendent of ARPANET.

Think Macbook Air as a PDA with better capability but only bigger (but also thinner)

Remember the fixed Ram,fixed Battery.....

"target the new market segment between notebook and PDA"

Apple will not terminate Mac Mini, but trying to push Apple TV as living rooming wireless solution, and entry level Apple-style entertainment experience, to generate Halo effect..

Push Everything wireless as well......a wireless apple consumer/pro computing/entertainment solution

whatever.. making it thin doesn't warrant the high price / low performance.. for my part I think the MBA doesn't fit in to any larger market niches nor does it fit into the general apple design pattern. They optically brought the thickness down by beveling the sides of the machine but no other mac is built like that.. plus it must have made the conception of the machine more expensive and more complicated.. but for what ? I'm disappointed by the keynote which was hyped as one of the most innovative, etc.. but at the end there is not even an update to Leopard, nor a new (smaller, cheaper) iphone, nor movie rentals for Europe.. no smaller MacPro enclosure, nor anything really innovating at all.. if Apple goes on like this it will loose it's appeal as a industry innovator...

Oh, please. no optical drive = no problem. I'd gladly give up my optical drive to save space/weight. I'll just use the optical in my Mac Pro. I think this has been said before, but I'll say it again, "The MBA isn't intended to be one's only computer."

well, then there is a big problem with the price point..

Liberal arts or hard science? If you're going into one of the sciences, your textbooks will be heavy. If you have plans for medical or law school, they get heavier still. Every pound and every tenth of an inch does count...and I went to school well before 5.5 pound, 1" MacBook Pros. They especially engineer law casebooks so that that last one is just a quarter-inch too big for your bag.

If you're not balking at the price (and I assume you're not, since you're looking at ultraportables generally), then there's no reason not to. Those two and a half pounds do make a difference when they're on your shoulders multiple times a day, every day.

Even a regular MacBook is much thinner and lighter than my school laptop ever was, and it's a lot cheaper. But you really don't gain much, other than some cash...and if you're paying with scholarship or financial aid money, maybe not even that.

These notebooks are faster and more powerful than G4 PowerBooks, which people to this day use for pretty demanding work. You won't be coming close to that; even Photoshop will run fine. It's always remarkable to see people suddenly forget that most people don't have cutting edge specs, and a 2002 PowerMac much slower than this handles just fine. Hell, an 800MHz XP machine works just fine for most people...and look what a 300MHz iPhone can do.

Thanks. Although, I'm getting a lot of mixed opinions.

I'm probably going to major in Economics or possibly Business. But yes, the consideration of weight still remains. I'm also going to get the iPhone whenever the 3G model comes out.

Actually, I wasn't even looking into macs (my sister who is in college has a white macbook and I really did not like the feel of the mouse.. although I have been accustomed to the feel of laptops for a very long time) before I saw how much a small Sony Vaio would cost. To me, I thought the prices of the macbook (and even the Macbook Air) are great compared to the Vaio models. So for me, the decision is going to be between the black macbook vs MBA.. but I am not going to purchase the laptop until summer, before I leave.

whatever.. making it thin doesn't warrant the high price / low performance...

Thin and small costs money. High performance generates heat, remember the 12" Powerbook, and consumes big power, that's also why there was never a G5 Powerbook.

They optically brought the thickness down by beveling the sides of the machine but no other mac is built like that..

Yet

There were no other macs like the TiBook before it came out.

That should be the greatest indication that it will succeed. If we universally thought it sucked this thread would have lasted maybe 10 pages.

Not necessarily... I'd say people are just interested in Apple's biggest release this year, whether it sucks or not.

If anything people are usually louder when they *don't* like something on here :p

How about the USB SuperDrive? From what I've read only the MBA USB port has enough power to run the drive; and not any other mac laptops?

Where abouts did you read that? I'm fairly sure other Macs would be able to use it.

Actually I read somewhere that there's hardware in the Air that allows the USB Superdrive to be used/powered with the Air only, cant remember where i read this though.

Smaller Mac Pro enclosure? I thought something like that was released before that tanked? Something called the Cube?

Seriously people, aren't everyone expecting too much? In the years before the iPhone and the intel switch all anyone had for Macworld was a iLife upgrade and maybe slighter faster machines.

Some people are too greedy.

Wil Shipley has something to say to all MacBook Air haters

MacBook Air haters : (Article Title has NSFW language)

who told them that , the other companies couldnt invent! the thinnest laptop without all those they removed from it..

it would be a real innovation if Apple could make the thinnest laptop with cd drive , usbs , firewires etc..

if removing is an innovation then i can make even thinner than MBA.. i am a big fan of Apple.. But this one is a really big disappointment for me..

One more thing; i would say nothing about MBA , if they had announced more than one laptop which the other one would meet the expectations of the people who dont travel!!! a lot.. Because not only travellors were waiting for this keynote but also us..

ps: i travel a lot..

Okay, so explain the difference between these two machines from premium PC brands:

Sony TZ150N ($1749-2175)
Alienware m9750 ($1699)

Sony (more expensive) / Alienware (less expensive) / MBA :
1.06GHz Core 2 Duo (ULV) / 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo / 1.8GHz C2D (LV)
1GB RAM / 1GB RAM / 2GB RAM
2.6 pounds / 8.6 pounds / 3 pounds
11" LCD / 17" LCD / 13.3" LCD
DVD-R / DVD-R / external DVD-R
1.2" / 1.5" / 0.76" max (~.5" average)

Puzzling how the slower, smaller machine with a clearly inferior display and lesser features is so much more expensive. It's also strange that a machine with the same clock speed, same RAM, and same hard drive space in different packages can cost anywhere from $700 to $2200 from Dell. What drives those price differences?

It couldn't possibly be that making smaller, lighter notebooks really is expensive.

Go to Engadget. Look at the photos of the MBA on top of the 15" MBP. I'll remind you that the MBP is 1" thick--thinner than most current "ultraportables" to begin with--and it looks like a 2.5" Dell monster underneath the Air. It's not optically thinner. It's actually thinner. About 0.5" thick on average. It's quite something, even if you don't find the specs to your satisfaction.

Ditto....

"No Thanks"...

Portability is great and all, but not at the expense of... built in battery (replaced one on this Macbook already)... soldered RAM (upgraded mine to 2GB)... no optical drive... Only 1 USB... No Firewire... no swappable HD (upgraded to a 200GB in Oct.)

I'll take my 1.08 inch, 5 pound, Macbook ANYDAY!!! Then again, thats just me. Can I get an amen??

....or AMEN? same difference :p
also carrying a lightweight laptop may let you forget that there's an expensive toy inside your backpack, bookbag, or a manila "reusable" envelop ;)...

Don't know if I should even bother with this but I'm sick of people trying to make the Air sound superior to everything out there.

The way you have the MB air setup (1.8 Ghz upgrade, 80 G, + the USB SuperDrive) the price is $2198 making the sony less expensive and the air the most expensive according to your pricing- plus you forgot to add the weight of the SuperDrive =.71 lbs. for a total weigh on of 3.71 lbs.

If you're going to compare, don't try to skew the facts to try to favor your whimsy argument.

It's not about the Air at all. That information was tossed in as a comparison. It's pretty clear if you would just take the time to read.

The issue was between the ultraportable Sony and the better-performing and cheaper Alienware. How, curiously, the smaller, underperforming machine was somehow more expensive. It wasn't a three-way comparison about how the Air stacks up. It was an assessment of the fact that ultraportables are far more expensive for the same specs for a modest space savings--the regular MacBook is faster and thinner than the "ultraportable" Sony at close to half the price. But that's not the whole story, is it? Small and light is expensive. Disproportionately so.

And?
plus you forgot to add the weight of the SuperDrive =.71 lbs. for a total weigh on of 3.71 lbs.
No, the computer still weighs 3 pounds. I didn't forget, just like you didn't forget to add the weight of power adapters and the laptop case.
If you're going to compare, don't try to skew the facts to try to favor your whimsy argument.
Skew what facts? The Sony has fewer features, is smaller, has a cheaper display, and is slower than the Alienware. If making things smaller didn't cost money, it wouldn't be the more expensive machine.

@matticus008

Obviously it wasn't that clear - and if it were only between Sony and Alienware why bother posting the Air stats? (which by the way you totally skewed because the DVD is internal in both PCs, with weight accounted for, where it's external in the Air and therefore not accounted for and thus you must add .71 lbs. in order to say it has an external DVD - I also didn't mention the weight of anything else anywhere)

The Sony has fewer features, is smaller, has a cheaper display, and is slower than the Alienware. If making things smaller didn't cost money, it wouldn't be the more expensive machine.
That's actually 1000 times clearer now and much more precise. Thanks for making it so.
