First thing I do as well...whether a laptop or iMac.

So formatting the drive isn't bad for it at all? I really only know what I need to about computers, but for some reason I was under the impression that you wanted to format as little as possible.

No, formatting the drive is not harmful to your hardware.

The First thing I do (And im probly one of the only ones)

As soon as I get my Mac, I pop in the Restore CDs, Format the Drive, and Reinstall OSX without much of the Other Languages, Printer Drives, and Test Programs I dont need.

While its true they dont take up much space etc, This is a Laptop, and Space is Valueable at any cost...

I do this as well on every Mac I buy for myself or set up for other people. After all it does only take maybe 20 minutes. I recommend this procedure to everybody.

Install Quicksilver, AdiumX, Opera, Flip4mac, VLC, eventually NeoOffice, Pacifist might be nice, that unarchiver whatever it's name was, Smultron.

For commercial apps which might be intresting look for Path Finder, Toast Titanium, CrossOver, Parallells.

Little snitch maybe, depending on your hobbies...

I think i get the idea of yours here... :D ;)

Thanks!

How am I sure not to delete architectures versus deleting languages?

Whenever I use monolingual I select the Architectures tab and deselect all the check boxes just to be sure that they wont be deleted. Then I return to the Languages tab. Just always be sure when you press "remove" you know exactly what is going to be removed. This may sound scary but it saves lots of problems which ultimately need a reinstall to get around.

Savings in space can be quite substantial, when i first ran it I saved 3.6 Gbs.

Don't waste your time uninstalling those programs.. they don't take up much space at all

Garageband and iMovie don't take up too much space???

I say if you arent going to use them get rid of them, Garageband alone will save you 3 or 4 gig

All this talk of reformatting right when you get your new mac? I thought macs werent supposed to have as much "junk" on them when they first arrive? Aside from printer drivers, multiple languages, and maybe some test programs taking up extra space, what other benefits do you get from reformatting right when you get the computer?

I've got a seven month old 17" MBP with lots of software that would take a month to download off the satellite. Is it a big deal to just transfer those apps over to my wife's new laptop when it arrives?

in regards to callibrating your battery, it says on the instructions on this page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284

5. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.

does this mean that i can either let it sleep for five hours or just shut it down and turn it back on?

Interesting becuase when you first read it youy think you can either turn it off or let it sleep for five hours or more. However when you think about it why can you jsut turn it when if you put it to sleep you have to leave it for five hours.

I think it should read "Turn off the computer, or allow it to sleep, for five hours or more."

I personally would leave it off for 5 hours or more.

i just got this thine yesterday and i can't stop using it. i didn't know that i had to callibrate until i saw this thread. is it too late to do it because i have been using is yesterday and today.

From the same KB article

The battery needs to be recalibrated from time to time to keep the onscreen battery time and percent display accurate... you should perform this procedure when you first use your computer and then every few months thereafter.

It is not too late, just do it now. It is only so the OS can accurately predict how much battery charge is left.

What program allows you to see the number of battery cycles and battery capacity? There was a thread around here full of people posting their screenshots of it...is that an innate mac feature?

http://www.opensourcemac.org/

Adium is excellent. Supports a huge array of IM protocols, has a huge number of skins that aren't tacky, window options, transparency, etc. I'd also recommend Firefox, GIMP & Seashore [the latter is more basic, but also doesn't need X11, and is therefore faster], the Flip4Mac [WMV codec for QT] & the Perian [codec pack for QT], and likely NeoOffice if you need it, to hold you until Office 2008 hits OS X.

do you guys read the thread? you can do that in system profiler and / or use coconut battery (it clearly mentionned two post above yours!)

set exposé settings so you can use the corners of your screen to activate it. Much easier to drag'n'drop stuff.

I read it several weeks ago - sorry I didn't remember the specifics. And I clearly missed it or I wouldn't have asked.

Thank you for the answers but you don't need to be snotty about it - you snarking back clutters up the forum as much as my asking a stupid question.

Today's the day I'm going to order my Macbook yet I haven't decided on buying the Macbook or Mabook Pro!

He's the story. I want to buy a mac mainly for music production, using applications such as Ableton Live and Logic.

Up until Tuesday I had pretty much decided on buying a Macbook with an upgraded 2gb ram as the spec of this machine was very close to that of the pro and the addition features on the pro didn't justify the hefty price difference.

However, since Apple released the updates for the pro I am now wondering whether I should go for the 15" 2.4 pro. It's more expensive but is the difference in performance compared to the macbook worth the extra cost?

Can anyone give me some advise?
