But don't drop your computer. Don't. Don't do it.

Hahah, that is so tagged for tomorrow morning when they deliver it. Personally I'm going to reinstall OS X, drop *some* of the printer drivers, a few of the more obscure language packs [I travel, so I still need a few] and probably some of the trial/included software I don't need. Didn't do it with my iMac but I can see myself needing the extra space.

Other than that, I've been saving this background for it; I have a bunch of very high quality 1440x900 photographs I trawled the web for, but this one I wanted to save for the MBP.

However, since Apple released the updates for the pro I am now wondering whether I should go for the 15" 2.4 pro. It's more expensive but is the difference in performance compared to the macbook worth the extra cost?

Can anyone give me some advise?
CPU? No
Memory? No
Harddrive? No
Network? No

You can have 4GB ram but it seems 2GB was enough for you, so only reason is much better gfx.

Thanks!

How am I sure not to delete architectures versus deleting languages?

There's no need to bother with removing languages at all, really. Why not use your MBP then, if you feel the need or wish to do so later, you'll be a lot more familiar with it.

Go through system preferences and set everything up and add everyone to your address book. Add any extra apps that you need. After that, its all hapsy-flapsy really. Flip4mac is useful as you can play some stuff from the internet that might not otherwise be compatible with mac, have a look through the available widgets, as previously mentioned Google Earth is fun and useful.

I've never bothered removing standard apps. Just how full is your mbp going to get? I don't think they slow anything down until it's more than half full. You can always just get rid of the icons from the dock and leave them sitting in the apps folder.

Today's the day I'm going to order my Macbook yet I haven't decided on buying the Macbook or Mabook Pro!

He's the story. I want to buy a mac mainly for music production, using applications such as Ableton Live and Logic.

Up until Tuesday I had pretty much decided on buying a Macbook with an upgraded 2gb ram as the spec of this machine was very close to that of the pro and the addition features on the pro didn't justify the hefty price difference.

However, since Apple released the updates for the pro I am now wondering whether I should go for the 15" 2.4 pro. It's more expensive but is the difference in performance compared to the macbook worth the extra cost?

Can anyone give me some advise?

I would say that this depends first on your budget and second on taking a step back and looking at what you realistically need.

My opinion:
If you will be using an external drive because the amount of recording you do is extensive, you will want that firewire 800 or an expansion slot. When I record, I use a ridiculous amount of tracks and every pixel of screen real estate matters. For connectivity/amount-of-RAM/screen size, the 2.2 is an option I wouldn't immediately ignore. For all people around here (myself included) talk about getting the newest and fastest thing, I have to remind myself that I recorded two albums on an AMD XP 2600+ on 512 mb of RAM :D

On the other hand, if it's more of a project studio thing? Drop the difference into a Shure LDC mic; I love mine.

Hey

Im new to macs but i saw one post about 3 weeks ago stating something about making an applications folder in your user account instead of using the standard system application folder to store all your apps.... sorry i cant find the post and i dont know how useful this is... im also getting a mbp sometime soon for college :)

All this talk of reformatting right when you get your new mac? I thought macs werent supposed to have as much "junk" on them when they first arrive? Aside from printer drivers, multiple languages, and maybe some test programs taking up extra space, what other benefits do you get from reformatting right when you get the computer?

Macs don't come with "junk". Some people would call the Life suite (iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, and garageband) junk if they don't use them, but there's no Adware/bloatware.

Additionally, Wiping the computer when you get it to remove printer drivers and language stuff (which is why people do it) just reduces the functionality. It's like not installing a part of the operating system itself. Sure, it saves space, but then you can't read korean websites either ;)
