I don’t think CarPlay on infotainment offers anything over the built-in interface, though. Just a picture of the artwork with the name of the track playing and transport controls. Not using CarPlay is effectively having the same functionality on the infotainment screen without a complete takeover.
No, not at all. Especially if you use Apple Maps. I find my building in interface (BMW iDrive7) to be hideous and ugly too. CarPlay runs circles around it. Besides, we're talking about having options here, not what's better — everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I do agree that native voice assistants in cars are bad. But SIRI is not so far away. To be true, voice assistants in telephone exchanges in Sweden are way better than Google or Siri in my experience. Recently I tried Apple Maps in CarPlay to find a street with voice assistant. It couldn't understand me at all though the street was new but it do exists in Apple Maps. Google Maps could understand me but gave me directions to park the car on the side of another road and jump over the fence. Only Waze gave the correct direction.

As long as Apple don't make Siri to understand voice commands properly, it's not gonna make any difference.

Two people in this thread have already claimed they will not buy a Tesla for this reason. So yeah, it's REALLY a reason.
People are certainly free to claim what they want. People make all sorts of claims regarding not buying apple products until “x” happens. And yet the model y is the best selling car in the world and apple is a $3T company.

Oh right, you'd much rather a custom interface designed by a team of software engineers who work for a car company. This is EXACTLY why CarPlay is popular, and it follows you from car to car no matter who designs the hardware.
Whilst it does, this clearly shows that it doesn’t at the same time. The UI can be quite a different experience under this new updated version.

Spoken like someone that's never driven the former, and couldn't afford either anyway.

sorry, what were you saying?

I can't wait to drive 205 km/h while browsing my widgets in my Porche!

Meanwhile Apple doesn't even provide a freaking weather app for regular CarPlay for us plebs who don't regularly drive 205 km/h. You have to download some crappy third party app that reads you the forecast, because it's "safe" LMAO.

What the hell? My Tesla’s software has been perfect and I haven’t had any bugs.

meanwhile, i updated to the holiday update and now my lock sound is stuck and i can't get back to the default.

i briefly enabled the custom lock sound to see what it's like and now every time i lock the car it farts.

I have a Tesla (2021 Model 3 LR) and there's no way I'm ditching it just for CarPlay.

The Supercharger network, how well Autopilot performs, and the high range are major features I use that trump CarPlay. Plus my car has Apple Music integration and I just steam Bluetooth music anyway.

The MAJOR feature I wish I could have is Waze integration on navigation. I speed too much and need to know where the cops are. So having to turn on Waze on my phone sucks.

Of course I wish Tesla gave us CarPlay as an option. But I'm not ditching my entire car for it if the car is awesome already.

I'm not a Tesla or Apple apologist. Nothing is perfect. But to ditch your Tesla JUST for CarPlay is kinda insane.

CarPlay just does not fit for a premium product like a Porsche. I hope Porsche does not adjust its display design just to make it look best on CarPlay.
Totally disagree. Love that Porsche is getting it and think it looks great!

Other people are reporting this bug on Reddit. Are you using .2 or .4 of the holiday update?

If it's widespread, they'll fix it soon.

Aston Martin and Porsche today previewed the first vehicle dashboards with support for Apple's next-generation CarPlay experience, which launches in 2024, according to a Car and Driver report spotted by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Aston Martin confirmed that it will release its first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay in 2024, but it's unclear exactly when in the year this will happen, or which models will support it. Porsche did not provide a timeframe or reveal any specific details.

Apple first previewed the next-generation CarPlay experience in June 2022, promising deeper integration with the instrument cluster and climate controls, support for multiple displays across the dashboard, a dedicated FM radio app, widgets, and more.

The next-generation CarPlay interface can be tailored to each specific vehicle model and automaker's brand identity, as pictured below.

Aston Martin previewed CarPlay integration with the instrument cluster and climate controls:

Porsche showed off a custom elongated CarPlay interface on the central screen, along with widgets for apps like Calendar, Music, and Weather on a second display:

With next-generation CarPlay, a connected iPhone will provide app-related data, while the vehicle will provide driving-specific data and info like tire pressure. Apple said the connected iPhone will not store or track this vehicle information.

When first unveiling next-generation CarPlay last year, Apple said committed automakers included Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, and Volvo. Beyond the addition of Aston Martin, it's unclear if this list has changed since that initial announcement.

Below, we have recapped five key features to expect from next-generation CarPlay, as previewed by Apple last year.

Instrument Cluster Integration

The new CarPlay experience will provide integration with a vehicle's instrument cluster, including the speedometer, tachometer, odometer, fuel gauge, engine temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, and more. Apple says drivers will be able to choose from several gauge cluster designs and layouts, including brand‑specific options.

Climate Controls

You'll be able to access your vehicle's climate controls directly within the new version of CarPlay, allowing you to adjust the temperature of the A/C or heat, fan speed, heated seats, heated steering wheel, and other options.

Multi-Display Support

The new version of CarPlay will be able to appear across all of the displays in a vehicle, providing a consistent experience across the infotainment system, instrument cluster, and any additional screens on the dashboard. Apple says CarPlay will be tailored to each new vehicle model to accommodate unique screen shapes and layouts.

Widgets

Widgets will be a key part of the new CarPlay experience, offering at-a-glance information such as trip duration, fuel economy, distance traveled, calendar events, weather, phone calls, the status of a HomeKit-enabled garage door, and more. It will also be possible to view and scroll through the widgets within the instrument cluster.

FM Radio App

The new version of CarPlay will include an all-new Radio app that allows you to easily control the FM radio in your vehicle, such as to change the station.

Sounds like I have one more reason to get a Macan EV next year.
