I have a Tesla (2021 Model 3 LR) and there's no way I'm ditching it just for CarPlay.

The Supercharger network, how well Autopilot performs, and the high range are major features I use that trump CarPlay. Plus my car has Apple Music integration and I just steam Bluetooth music anyway.

The MAJOR feature I wish I could have is Waze integration on navigation. I speed too much and need to know where the cops are. So having to turn on Waze on my phone sucks.

Of course I wish Tesla gave us CarPlay as an option. But I'm not ditching my entire car for it if the car is awesome already.

I'm not a Tesla or Apple apologist. Nothing is perfect. But to ditch your Tesla JUST for CarPlay is kinda insane.
I miss CarPlay. My last vehicle had wireless CarPlay.

Having said that Tesla navigation is allegedly getting Waze like features. Automatically crowdsourcing and broadcasting the camera data from millions of Tesla the navigation is supposed to display objects and hazards. We’ll have to wait and see how it looks, if and when it arrives.

Meanwhile, GM is abandoning their Apple customers and attempting to force them to use a Google based solution. Good luck GM, we prefer our privacy.

with the 2005 era tomtom quality GPS it already has, it will never catch up. tesla's software is old, buggy junk.

Yeah, just don't have it active. I know not every car is like this, but for wired Carplay vehicles, don't plug the phone in or immediately toggle Carplay OFF and go back to the normal UI. In my car I tend to prefer the native UI over Carplay, and in some cases will just toggle all the displays off because I'm not driving some place where I'm concerned with anything on the UI, Apple or otherwise. But it's a bit like having A/C in a climate where you never need to use it. Then just don't. For those that do, they have it.
Automakers can’t assume you’ll own an apple device, so their digital screens will have a default interface that can adapt to Apple’s interface if you choose to integrate your device.

So, does CarPlay make an Aston Martin or a Porsche any less safe? Seems like a good opportunity for them to dog on GM.

Another huge improvement is can we have the cars GPS feed the location to the iPhone. Sorry but the iPhone GPS like almost if not all smart phones is not that great had has issues compare to a car.

i don't mind touch screens for the radio and navigation, but for car controls, nothing beats knobs and buttons that you don't have to look at to use.
Definitely. This was one factor I took into account when buying a new car. The difference between iDrive 7 and 8 was huge for me. I hated the long screen and tapping on a damned screen for temperature and other car controls.

I can't stress how shortsighted this is. The offer from CarPlay is a consistent interface, with the same apps and subscriptions, that follows you from car to car, is upgraded without needing to by a new car, and doesn't have janky bluetooth functions to integrate calls and texts.

The original poster didn’t want their vehicle to be a smart phone on wheels, so they’re not interested in subscriptions and apps on their vehicle.
I’m one of the few who does NOT want my vehicle to be a smart phone on wheels. It would be nice if one has the option of limiting Car Play to the infotainment screen.
In today’s CarPlay enabled cars, not using CarPlay usually provides the same functionality as CarPlay. CarPlay has a few other features, but, again, those features make the vehicle more of a smart phone on wheels.

Just looking at the car I have, I’ve got four options for the UI of the dashboard area, one that looks a lot like the Aston Martin example above. My expectation from the quote:
The next-generation CarPlay interface can be tailored to each specific vehicle model and automaker's brand identity, as pictured below.
is that whatever options they offer in the dashboard area separate from the infotainment area will be exactly what Biro would be looking for… there may be some CarPlay “skins”, but the car manufacturer will be able to still maintain a level of distinction by offering visual options alongside the CarPlay ones.

While it wouldn’t be “CarPlay limited to the infotainment screen” (in that CarPlay will be providing the UI for that screen), in effect, it would provide the same UI feel.

we will see you at the nearest Tesla Supercharger soon 🤣
Actually not a good thing for Tesla overall. The lines at superchargers are already annoyingly long most of the time with Tesla-only cars. It's only gotten worse since Pre-Covid.

That’s cool, how about putting some of those split views and widgets on my CarPlay display and my iPhone mounted on the vent.

It depends on the area; the specific supercharger location etc. but Tesla is going to reserve a percentage of superchargers for its own. But yeah, some locations will be crowded. If you’re a shareholder, yeah it will be good.

We are seeing the beta version driver cluster of what will go into Apple’s own automobile.

Having a screen that shows my calendar of upcoming work events in my car is my own personal version of hell. Why is all this needed?
We just seem to be creating alternate ways of viewing and interacting with same apps- across CarPlay, iPhone, iPad, Watch, Mac, Vision Pro. I enjoy the music app and ease of calls with CarPlay. Otherwise, I’m watching the road!

When will they understand this. When. How do we know this and they don’t. Unreal.

Glad to hear that the new vehicles with CarPlay are announced. Should be seeing more vehicles launch in the coming months.

Anyone know if I can port my widget app to the car with this lol
Yes, although it depends on the category you submit it as and pending review. Not all are deemed safe whilst driving, take a look at Apple Developer (and also at Google AAOS developer) pages.

A significant and often overlooked point. Especially handy in very built up urban areas, and mountain areas.

way better than tesla's junky, buggy software. can't wait to throw it away and get a porsche.

Had my Model S since 2017 and this would be my aim too. The only thing is how expensive the Taycan is when you start adding extras - and i'll no longer be able to fit 2.4 meter building materials in my car with ease!
