So if you're walking the dog you have to let go of the leash to text? If you're shopping you must put the bags down to check the football scores? Yes, a small risk of dropping occurs (the smaller the hands the bigger the risk), but it's not an awful risk.
I put the shopping bag around my arm. The hands stay free. Most of the time I use my phone at home anyway. I have no data plan. So outside of my home I need a free Wi-Fi to access the internet.

I honestly couldn't care less about having generative AI on my phone, seems like a toy. I've got long term concerns about what it will do to humanity when EVERY photo taken is manipulated to some degree by AI to look "perfect" but thats not what I am talking about right now. What I would really love is AI that makes Siri more useful. Done right, that could be their next killer product and really be transformative.

Fair enough! I'm not sure you're in the majority though

I used to upgrade every 2 years without fail. 3G, 4, 5, 6 Plus, 7, XR, 12 Pro.

But I’m still rocking the 12 Pro and even these rumours don’t have me wanting for an upgrade like I used to. It really feels like since the 11/12 generations things have slowed down tremendously.
Recently I’ve been waiting every three years to upgrade, right now I’m on the 14 so I’ll wait for the 17
The iPhone 11 was the best phone I ever had, it went downhill when I went to the 14 as far as battery life.

WTF, stop making things up.

I’m not making anything up.

Some photography enthusiasts ARE using iPhone.

SOME photography enthusiasts ARE using a shoebox with a pinhole in it. So?

WHERE did I say I replaced my DSLR with an iPhone? WHERE did I say I dislike dedicated cameras?

You're living in your own reality, enjoy it.

No, the opposite is true, actually. Your campaign to establish the idea that camera phones are all people want or need is the weird alternate reality that doesn’t align with the real world.

That’s an understatement. This is what they’re up against
Can a little iPhone really compete against this?

if you told people in that computer room below that you would have a device that fits in your pocket and would outperform every machine in that room and more storage as well they would think you are crazy.

No phone manufacturers make a phone for you anymore.. Apple isn't the only one that has decided phones under 6' are no longer what the vast majority want.
so what's the answer/solution? only thing I can think of is our wallets ...
I'm perfectly happy with my 13PM, a couple mm more will be fine as I'd expect readability to improve. My wife on the other hand loves her 13 mini and doesn't want anything bigger ...

I know. I worked at an ad agency back then that owned several of them.

Cool, think I used one once, huge thing. But these says most people just use their phones, especially when out and about. However a fire few still have an SLR or decent compact for kiddie pics etc. Kids are probably the biggest users of phone cameras due to social media.
Dedicated cameras aren't going anywhere despite what anyone might think.

So in essence, the 16 Pro’s would be a very minor upgrade, aside from the chip, camera and tweak in design… I guess I’ll just upgrade my 11PM to the 15 while I have time then.

Apple has been using 6.1 and 6.7-inch display sizes for all ‌iPhone‌ generations since the 2020 ‌iPhone‌ 12 models, but display sizes are finally set to increase slightly in 2024. The ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ display is expected to be approximately 6.3 inches, while the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max display will be approximately 6.9 inches.

iPhone 16 Pro Front Feature

This is not an upgrade. This is not a positive.

Yeah, looks like the typical “gotta make sure people buy new cases” deal.

I’m on record as supporting the shutter button addition but it isn’t really much of an upgrade either.

Every cycle that Apple continues to iterate on a 10+ year old design is a year they disappoint and the disappointment increases each time. Other companies have realized that the featureless glass slab is NOT the best ideal to shoot for. Apple needs to really embrace this and rethink the entire iPhone platform.

But they won’t.

Not sure. 13 mini will be an excellent phone for years to come so she'll just have to take care of it until the market shifts. I had an iPhone X for just shy of 6 years and thought 5.8' was the perfect size. Then I bought the 15PM and absolutely love it. I got used to the size very quickly and now I wish I would of purchased the 13PM in Sierra Blue (love that color) instead of waiting a couple of more years before making the jump

You can run complex LLM's on powerful home computers- you don't need wracks of servers to do it. Basic LLM's could run on iPhones witu enough RAM and improve Siri... heaven knows that Siri needs the help 😅
I'd consider any electricity or compute power used for LLM or so-called "AI" is a waste of resources.
There is zero benefit to mankind. It's just going to be like the email bots spamming nonstop, turned up to 11, across every plane of the internet.

Luckily, others have more foresight 🙂

It can be extraordinarily useful in the future, and not just a source of trolling/bots/crap content.

I am clearly not the target demographic but I'm still loving my 12 mini and the only replacement coming for me will be the battery at some point this year.

I tend to trade in my iPhone Pro Max every year and upgrade to the new model, but with the 15 Pro Max, with the 8 GB RAM and USB-C, I don’t know if I’m going to upgrade this year… first time in years. I really don’t see a reason to wake up early on pre-order day and get the 16. Perhaps I can be convinced but I just can’t see it this year at all…
I was a (nearly) yearly upgrade person, up until the iPhone 13PM that I still carry. Unfortunately, there’s hasn’t been a worthwhile upgrade since then, and this year appears to be no different.

This is so boring. Can we get some upgrades other than the chip and the camera? A much better battery, perhaps?

The 8 GB RAM on the 15 pro max is a quality of life update in terms of multitasking. On prior iPhones many times when I’d switch to other apps and come back to one I was using, there’d be a forced refresh and all context was gone. This was incredibly annoying when for example on a YouTube video or instagram post… when you come back and the app context is lost, sometimes you can’t find what you were looking at before. The 8 GB ram is very helpful in this regard.

The 15 pro max’s usb-c upgrade is excellent as well. I can just use one cable to charge all my devices now no more lightning. And another thing I like is, the usb-c port means I can connect accessories to the iPhone that I couldn’t before like external usb-c storage or Ethernet adapters. I just installed a new unifi internet cloud gateway and needed to connect to it on one of the lan ports to configure dhcp and lan address range. In the past, I’d need a computer to do the task. But with usb-c and iPhone, I just used a 2.5 Gbps usb-c Ethernet adapter, and did the task quickly from the iPhone. Very helpful.

So that is why I say I don’t think I’ll be upgrading any time soon. I don’t see a reason. Apple should’ve given us these features years ago… android phones from years ago have had usb-c and 8, 12, and even up to 16 GB RAM in some instances. Samsung dex is cool why doesn’t iPhone have something similar? The chip clearly is fast enough to do it.

I’m in the opposite boat: my Magic Mouse, AirPods, Magic Keyboard, iPad, PowerBeats, Beats Solo, Apple TV remote, and other accessories I’m probably forgetting, are all lighting. Therefore, I’m not crazy about the move to USB-C.

For my use case, I have never needed to connect an accessory to my iPhone via the port before, other than the old EarPods.

I also really dislike the “Dynamic Island.”

I’ll concede the jump from 6 to 8GB is likely very nice, and hopefully we’ll see another jump in Ram this year.
