Hi - I'm getting this too. It's a strange static 'ticking' or 'popping sound'. The quality improves slightly when you remove the case. Based in the UK so I took my 8 Plus back to the Carphone Werehouse but the replacement is doing the same. Apparently I sound very far away when making a call. So maybe a software update is needed? Apple Support advised me to change my SIM card which I'm in the process of doing...
Bollocks to the SIM Card it won't work. Unfortunately I think we're just going to have to hold tight and hope for the best that Apple fixes it

On a positive note, the speakers on the 8Plus are ridiculously louder than the 7 Plus! Like major major improvement. Glad the snap, crackle and pop does not occur during audio playback.
(Wondering if it's connected to this new HD feature for cellular that I've been reading about.)

So you are getting the popcrackles when using the speakers as well as the earpiece?

That would point to a software issue if that is the case.

Bloody love the new speakers they sound gorgeous... apart from when I'm making a call...

The issue is only with earpiece.
It's not "electrical" noise. It's the housing or earpiece material making the noise.
I suppose, two factors here:
1. Earpiece is waterproof (additional isolation) material.
2. Increased loudness.

Just IMHO.

That was referenced a little earlier in the thread but doubt it's the issue

I'm having the same problem as well. I've got a 8+, gold, 256, on ATT. I read about the issue on here this weekend but I hadn't really noticed it myself. I don't make a lot of phone calls. I did notice it today though, when I had to call to make an appointment. The lady on the other end didn't seem to have a problem hearing me but it was still annoying. Will keep testing it. I saw the feedback to Apple link on here and I submitted a bug report. I'm hoping that if everyone that is having the problem complains, maybe something will be done about it. It seems that just getting a replacement isn't fixing the issue. Hopefully with a software update, they can fix it.

Left myself a voicemail - the voicemail doesn't have crackling either when using headphones or the earpiece. Positive it's a software issue.

OK, but there's something you must consider that makes your theory unlikely: the issue dissapears when you switch on/off the speaker.

There is a "hit" to the speaker when you toggle it. Possibly it "affects" speaker material.

If you're right, and considering the apparent extent of the issue, Apple will eventually be forced to replace millions of units, which would be by far the most serious "#gate" of an Apple device up to date.

But honestly, based on my experience with the issue on my iPhone 8, I have the feeling that this is not hardware-related.

I’m less inclined to think it’s the speaker material. It sounds electronic to me IMO. Though I see why it would seem it wasn’t since the audio itself isn’t replaced with the click.

Plus, I don’t get any of the clicking when using voicemail playback via the receiver. Only during calls. If it were a material issue, it would manifest during both calls and any other receiver audio or so one would assume.

A material issue would be the worst case scenario with replacement devices/replacement parts being the only option.

Hopefully this can be addressed with software.

Doesn’t feel like material to me. It’s too inconsistent to be a physical thing. It’s most likely software derived electronic noise.

This is happening to my Verizon 8+ phone. Doesn't happen when using bluetooth though so it seems to be a hardware issue?

1) Has anyone reproduced this on iOS 11 on an older device? That way we can figure out if it is related to iOS or to the combination of iOS+iPhone 8/Plus.
2) Seems like everybody with iPhone 8 or 8 Plus is affected. Are there any reports of people who is not affected?

To summarize: this manifests on calls (voice or wi-fi), only by using the earpiece, with every carrier on both iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. It does not happen while listening to music, voicemail, etc through the earpiece. Triggering the speaker can turn this effect on and off. In never manifests through the speaker or headphones. Hard reset and firmware restore do not make the issue go away.

Worst case scenario: if it is hardware (which I think is unlikely), there is a consistent way to "fix" it, which means the developers can introduce a software "workaround" to patch the problem, even if the root cause is in hardware.
I never had this issue on my 7+ running any/all of the iOS 11 betas. It's definitely an iPhone 8+ (maybe 8 as well?) thing.

Looks like iOS 11.0.1 may release next Tuesday per some people on reddit, not tomorrow. Boooo. I am not going to exchange mine today at my genius appointment. I just want them to note the system for everyone's sake to make sure Apple is aware of it. Hopefully 11.0.1 will drop before my 14 day return window ends next week.

Agreed.
Currently in the process of getting a new phone shipped out for a bad screen.
I do suspect it's software though

I'm pretty confident now that it's a software problem - otherwise it would happen with audio playback too
Me too. If it is hardware related the problem would appear when you play music or watch a YouTube video...

I'm not sure anymore it is just software. I just made a call using RingCentral (voice over IP, call made over wifi and not Verizon network) I noticed that if I lightly tap on the camera lens or the flash area it causes the EXACT same crackling / high pitched popping sound. Using an 8+. Not looking good...

Edit- Yep, I can consistently reproduce this issue! Tapping the lens (and more often toward the flash light area) causes the high pitched clicking every time for me. Sometimes if I use a little more pressure to tap it causes it, sometimes a light tap does it. Also try leaving a finger on the camera lens / flash area during a call and just apply pressure. This also caused the clicking to happen more often during the call.
